Chandra Shekhar Ghosh was born in a Bangladeshi refugee family in India and grew up in poverty. After earning his master's degree, he worked for an NGO and realized social organizations fail to address the root causes of poverty. In 2002, he started Bandhan in West Bengal with two employees and 200,000 rupees in capital to provide microfinance services to the poor. Bandhan was granted a banking license in 2015, allowing it to expand its services. Ghosh's vision is for all Indians to have access to basic banking and his bank focuses on lending to rural areas while remaining committed to helping the poor.
