30% of particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution in China is contributed by the transportation sector. Air pollution poses major challenges for cities like Beijing, which has high levels of toxic gases from traffic. Beijing prioritized investment in public transportation from 1996 to 2010, developing its metro system from 2 lines and 54 km to 18 lines and 527 km, as well as a 64 km bus rapid transit system. Beijing also implemented transportation demand management policies like restricting vehicles one day per week based on license plates and limiting new licenses to 20,000 per month. The World Resources Institute worked with Beijing and other Chinese cities to develop emissions modeling, analyze policy scenarios, and create public communication strategies to reduce transportation emissions and pollution.

Prof. Hayashi presented on sustainable urban development and transportation systems for megacities. He discussed the limits to growth due to finite resources and the need to transition from a one-way to circular economy. He also emphasized the importance of low carbon transport and integrated transport systems to reduce traffic congestion and CO2 emissions. Prof. Hayashi proposed the Avoid-Shift-Improve framework to guide strategic actions toward more sustainable mobility. He also examined measuring personal quality of life to evaluate inclusiveness in sustainable development goals. Finally, Prof. Hayashi concluded that achieving sustainability, higher quality of life, and a circular green economy system are key to creating cities aligned with sustainable development goals.

Sustainable city with sustainable transportation system in now become the heartiest demand for burgher, especially in a city like Dhaka; where ecological imbalance lead to unbearable livable condition with unsustainable growth in every sector resulting the degradation of life quality. Transportation sector in Dhaka is one of the major adherents behind ecological deterioration by emitting enormous CO2 in atmosphere. Thus this study aimed at determining the transport footprint for vehicles travel in Dhaka. The study estimates the CO2 emission from motorized vehicles using average emission factor method and then determines the average bio-capacity of Dhaka city to compare it with the footprint. The study finds out that only for vehicles CO2 emission and physical transportation network; the transport footprint is seventy times larger than the bio-capacity. In transportation sector of Dhaka; ecological footprint credibly depicts the present condition, that is not at all sustainable from environmental friendly transport system context and it also an absolute indication for future concerning transport development pattern and their holes. At this point for developing sustainable transportation system considering ecological balance; Transport Demand Management (TDM), low carbon transport, transit oriented development (TOD), and creation of green corridors can be of some greatest tools for Dhaka.

Our region has several good examples of how we can reduce the use of fossil fuels within sustainable urban mobility systems and create liveable cities. The Bulletin both provides examples of technical solutions and innovative campaigns from the UBC member-cities as well as displaying several externally co-funded mobility projects that covers a series of cities around the Baltic Sea Region. In the editorial Mr Siim Kallas, EU Commissioner on transport and vice president for the EU Commission, stresses the importance of acknowledging also the economic benefits of developing sustainable urban mobility systems. He further on emphasise the necessity to stimulate markets that foster sustainable mobility supplies and the unpredictable future of fossil fuel as the dominant source for our vehicle fleets.

A research study identifying the role of ports, a forward timeframe of 30 years in servicing national supply chains is being undertaken. A paradigm shift to ‘water based’ freight solutions by barges and other forms of Short Sea Shipping (SSS proposed in Hallock (2009 and 2010) as well as investigating stakeholder commitment to reducing their carbon footprint will be researched as part of this. Funding and better investment criteria will also be explored. The paper draws on European policy and governance frame works incorporating SSS as a component of the logistics response to sustainability. The green supply chain is now an important determinant of competitive advantage and is commercially acceptable.
