• In 2012, Chad joined the South Hills team as Principal. His focus on specialized programs continued
to emerge as he implemented an International Baccalaureate program and Business Enterprise
Program at South Hills. During his tenure as Principal, he re-branded school with a focus in student
retention and reversed the declining enrollment experienced by the rest of the district. As Principal,
he developed an online credit recovery program aimed at supporting student’s need and increased
the schools A-G college going rate from 44% to 65%. His dedication to data and metric analysis
allowed him to develop programs that reduced tardies by 23% and truancies by 87%. In his three
years at Principal, graduation rates rose from 97% to 99.3% and attendance rates increased from
95% to 97%. Chad championed a new bell schedule to include a tutorial period and extended
learning time as well as PLC time for teachers to meet and collaborate. His intervention program
reduced D and F grades by 30% and 31% respectively. Understanding that academics is only part
of a well-rounded education, Mr. Smith continued to support and enhance school spirit and culture
and increased participation rates by over 17% . The driving force behind Mr. Smith and his

• Chad lives in Tustin with his wife Laura Lynn and his two children,
Jessica (9) and Matthew (5). Chad is also the guardian of a Tustin
High graduate, Edward, who is atwo time all league, All County,
All CIF football player, who has received scholarship to play
football at UC Berkeley.Chad is an avid snow skier, scuba diver
and hiker. He and his daughter are also Black Belts in Tae Kwon
Do. He is currently finishing his Doctorate in Education at USC.

Background
• Born in the City of Orange, California in the center of Orange
County, Smith was raised in nearby Tustin, California. Smith
graduated from Tustin High School in 1990 and lettered in
Football and Track. He graduated from the University of Utah in
1994 with a degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a minor in
Geography. He returned to California to attend graduate school at
the University of Southern California. He graduated from USC in
1996 with a Master’s in Urban Planning (MPL) and Public
Administration. He is currently working on his Doctorate in
Education at the University of Southern California.
