This chapter discusses the physical and mental changes that occur in late adulthood. Physically, senses like vision, hearing, taste and smell decline as people age. However, technology can help compensate for many sensory losses. Cardiovascular disease is a common health problem in late adulthood but keeping risk factors like diabetes, smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol in check can help reduce risks. Exercise and a healthy diet are also important for physical and mental health. Mentally, thinking can slow down with age as the brain produces fewer neurotransmitters, but brain function varies and remains strong for many.
