Exchange 2013
First version designed to integrate with cloud services – Office 365
Competitive environment – Google Mail and Google Apps
Datacenters require scalable architecture with high manageability with little administrative input
– solid monitoring with predefined actions
Lower operational costs – JBOD supported since Exchange 2010
Hybrid environments supporting on-premises and Office 365 integration – one namespace and
address book with independent mailbox storage (mix on-premises/Office 365)
15
New to Exchange 2013
New look and feel to client/management interfaces – redesigned Outlook 2013, Outlook Web
App (OWA) and Exchange Admin Center (EAC)
Exchange Management Shell (EMS) – 300+ new cmdlets, runs on PowerShell 3.0
Mailbox and Client Access Server roles simplified
Managed store – store.exe process for each mailbox database rather than one process for all
databases
Managed availability

Preparing AD for Exchange
Exchange is reliant on your site topology for mail routing
◦ Rename sites to match locations
◦ Create subnets and associate with appropriate sites
◦ Configure site links
◦ Configure site costs
◦ NTDS Site Settings → Universal Group Membership Caching
20
Preparing the Schema for Exchange
If requested for a comprehensive list of schema modifications they can be located on the
Exchange installation DVD
◦ Exchange2013MediaSetupDataschema*.ldf
◦ Readable files with schema modifications for Exchange
Recommended to copy the media to a local HDD
Exchange2013MediaSetup.exe will automatically perform schema modifications
Can perform schema modifications using CMD line
21
Preparing AD for Exchange
If using a remote Windows client (Windows 8 or better) to manage your infrastructure you will
need the remote server admin tools
◦ Install-WindowsFeature Rsat-Adds
Three commands to manually prepare AD for Exchange
◦ Prepare the Schema; performed once as an Enterprise Admin/Schema Admin with access to the Schema
master
.Setup /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
◦ Prepare the configuration partition in AD and create the Exchange organization
.Setup /PrepareAd /OrganizationName:OrgName
/IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
◦ Prepare the current domain or all domains for Exchange (performed in any domain that uses Exchange
even if no Exchange servers exist in the domain)
.Setup /PrepareDomain /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
.Setup /PrepareAllDomains /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
(Must be an Enterprise Admin)
22
Planning the Mailbox
Server Role
23
Planning the Mailbox Server Role
Plan for database size and storage performance requirements
Plan mailbox role capacity and placement
Plan for virtualization requirements and scenarios
Design public folder placement strategy
Validate storage using JetStress
24
Exchange Server Roles
Exchange 2010 Server Roles
◦ Mailbox
◦ Hub Transport
◦ Client Access
◦ Unified Messaging
◦ Edge Transport
Exchange 2013 Server Roles
◦ Mailbox (Hub Transport)
◦ Client Access
◦ Edge Transport (released with SP1)
25
Exchange Server 2013 Roles
Mailbox – stores MB database and uses the hub transport service to relay email
Client Access – connects Outlook to the mailbox server
Edge – works on the perimeter as a anti-virus/spam gateway
Exchange 2013 Versions
Exchange Server 2013 has two server licenses as defined by product key (can reissue key later
and switch up from trial/standard/enterprise at a later date – no downgrades)
◦ Standard – supports 5 mounted databases per server
◦ Enterprise – RTM 50 databases, Cumulative Update 2 (CU2) supports 100 databases (16 TB each)
Exchange 2013 has two Client Access License (CALs) that can be mixed/matched. Standard CAL
and Enterprise CAL
26
Exchange Mailbox Databases
How many databases do you need?
◦ Separation of departments into different databases
◦ Depends on service level agreements (SLA)
◦ 1-2 TB per database recommended
◦ ESEUTIL (tool used to perform maintenance on MB ESE databases) takes much longer to complete on larger databases
◦ Backup and recovery times longer for larger databases
◦ Different hardware and tools will have differing backup/recovery times
◦ Database Availability Groups (DAG) replicates on a database level
27
Exchange 2013 Public Folders
Microsoft would prefer companies move to SharePoint and as such have been trying to minimize
Public Folders in the past two versions of Exchange Server (2007 & 2010).
Public Folders have improved for Exchange 2013
◦ Now a mailbox within a MB database (was a separate database in previous versions of Exchange)
◦ Regular mailbox cmdlets work on Public Folder mailboxes – making migrations easier
◦ Public Folders now have only one writeable copy of the the public folder mailbox (previous versions of Exchange used a multi-
master public folder database replication strategy)
28
Planning Tools
Three tools used to get a structured view of your environment for planning/designing your
Exchange infrastructure.
◦ JetStress – Simulate Exchange disk I/O load on a server to verify the performance and stability of your
disk subsystem before putting your server into a production environment.
◦ Exchange 2013 Deployment Assistant – Web tool that asks questions about your environment and gives
recommendations.
◦ Exchange Server Role Requirements Calculator – Produces recommendations for sizing Exchange 2013
MB and CAS servers.

  • 17. Planning for Impact of Exchange on AD Services 17
  • 18. Planning for Impact of Exchange on AD Services Plan the number of domain controllers Plan around AD site topology Plan placement of GC servers Determine DNS changes required for Exchange Evaluate impact of schema changes required for Exchange Prepare domains for Exchange 18
  • 19. AD Requirements Forest and domain functional level of Windows Server 2003 or later Schema Master must be Windows Server 2003 or later GC at each site must be Windows Server 2003 or later ◦ Common to make each DC a GC (minimum of 2 GCs) ◦ X64 8:1 Processor Core Ratio Exchange: DC/GC RODC not useful in sites containing an Exchange server Exchange uses AD site topology for mail routing DNS MX (load balance and failover), TXT|SPF records (security) 19 Internet 2GB RAM Outlook Client 8GB RAM EXCH02 192.168.3.3 DG 192.168.3.1 DNS 192.168.3.2 EDGE01 Site 1: 192.168.2.0/24 Site 2: 192.168.3.0/24 2GB RAM Outlook Client RWDC02 DC/DNS 192.168.3.2/24 DG 192.168.3.1 DNS 192.168.3.2 Internal Switch 8GB RAM EXCH01 192.168.2.3 DG 192.168.2.1 DNS 192.168.2.2 RWDC01 DC/DNS 192.168.2.2/24 DG 192.168.2.1 DNS 192.168.2.2 Internal Switch DMZ Switch
  • 20. Preparing AD for Exchange Exchange is reliant on your site topology for mail routing ◦ Rename sites to match locations ◦ Create subnets and associate with appropriate sites ◦ Configure site links ◦ Configure site costs ◦ NTDS Site Settings → Universal Group Membership Caching 20
  • 21. Preparing the Schema for Exchange If requested for a comprehensive list of schema modifications they can be located on the Exchange installation DVD ◦ Exchange2013MediaSetupDataschema*.ldf ◦ Readable files with schema modifications for Exchange Recommended to copy the media to a local HDD Exchange2013MediaSetup.exe will automatically perform schema modifications Can perform schema modifications using CMD line 21
  • 22. Preparing AD for Exchange If using a remote Windows client (Windows 8 or better) to manage your infrastructure you will need the remote server admin tools ◦ Install-WindowsFeature Rsat-Adds Three commands to manually prepare AD for Exchange ◦ Prepare the Schema; performed once as an Enterprise Admin/Schema Admin with access to the Schema master .Setup /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms ◦ Prepare the configuration partition in AD and create the Exchange organization .Setup /PrepareAd /OrganizationName:OrgName /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms ◦ Prepare the current domain or all domains for Exchange (performed in any domain that uses Exchange even if no Exchange servers exist in the domain) .Setup /PrepareDomain /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms .Setup /PrepareAllDomains /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms (Must be an Enterprise Admin) 22
  • 24. Planning the Mailbox Server Role Plan for database size and storage performance requirements Plan mailbox role capacity and placement Plan for virtualization requirements and scenarios Design public folder placement strategy Validate storage using JetStress 24

  • 26. Exchange 2013 Versions Exchange Server 2013 has two server licenses as defined by product key (can reissue key later and switch up from trial/standard/enterprise at a later date – no downgrades) ◦ Standard – supports 5 mounted databases per server ◦ Enterprise – RTM 50 databases, Cumulative Update 2 (CU2) supports 100 databases (16 TB each) Exchange 2013 has two Client Access License (CALs) that can be mixed/matched. Standard CAL and Enterprise CAL 26
  • 27. Exchange Mailbox Databases How many databases do you need? ◦ Separation of departments into different databases ◦ Depends on service level agreements (SLA) ◦ 1-2 TB per database recommended ◦ ESEUTIL (tool used to perform maintenance on MB ESE databases) takes much longer to complete on larger databases ◦ Backup and recovery times longer for larger databases ◦ Different hardware and tools will have differing backup/recovery times ◦ Database Availability Groups (DAG) replicates on a database level 27
  • 28. Exchange 2013 Public Folders Microsoft would prefer companies move to SharePoint and as such have been trying to minimize Public Folders in the past two versions of Exchange Server (2007 & 2010). Public Folders have improved for Exchange 2013 ◦ Now a mailbox within a MB database (was a separate database in previous versions of Exchange) ◦ Regular mailbox cmdlets work on Public Folder mailboxes – making migrations easier ◦ Public Folders now have only one writeable copy of the the public folder mailbox (previous versions of Exchange used a multi- master public folder database replication strategy) 28
  • 29. Planning Tools Three tools used to get a structured view of your environment for planning/designing your Exchange infrastructure. ◦ JetStress – Simulate Exchange disk I/O load on a server to verify the performance and stability of your disk subsystem before putting your server into a production environment. ◦ Exchange 2013 Deployment Assistant – Web tool that asks questions about your environment and gives recommendations. ◦ Exchange Server Role Requirements Calculator – Produces recommendations for sizing Exchange 2013 MB and CAS servers. 29
