The cardiovascular system consists of two circuits - the pulmonary circuit and the systemic circuit. Blood alternates between these two circuits. The heart has four chambers - the right and left atria receive blood while the right and left ventricles pump blood out. The heart is surrounded by membranes called the pericardium. It has three layers - the outer epicardium, middle myocardium of cardiac muscle, and inner endocardium. The heart pumps blood through arteries, veins return blood to the heart, and capillaries allow for gas/nutrient exchange.
