Many small businesses are considering retrofitting their lighting to save energy and cut costs. But what light source is better CFL or LED? Take a look.
The document discusses compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), including their usage, disposal, characteristics, and environmental impacts compared to incandescent bulbs. CFLs use less energy, last longer, and save money over time compared to incandescent bulbs. However, CFLs contain small amounts of toxic mercury that require special disposal procedures to avoid environmental pollution. Many areas now mandate recycling of CFLs due to mercury concerns.
IF YOU ARE GOING FOR ENERGY SAVING LIGHT BULBS THEN GET BRIGHT ONES!!Saving Light Bulbs
With old fashioned filament light bulbs if you wanted a brighter light in a room you would typically have to change a 100w light bulb for a 150w light bulb. This would then give you 50% more light corresponding to an increase in lumens output from around 1400 lumens to 2100 lumens. For sure you get another 700 lumens of light but the price to pay in increased power consumption is 50 watts which is a high cost.

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) contain a small amount of mercury that requires safe handling and disposal of spent bulbs. The document provides guidance on safely cleaning up and recycling CFLs at home, including details on state requirements and best practices to prevent bulb breakage. It offers tips for properly cleaning up a broken CFL to avoid exposure to mercury vapor, such as airing out the room, carefully collecting all glass fragments, and promptly disposing of debris outside.
The recycling of mercury-containing light bulbs and other types of lamps minimizes the release of mercury into the air around you, and into the environment. Lamps, fluorescent tubes and CFLs are easily broken and can end up in a trash can because most people don’t know where to recycle their lamps, or even that they should recycle them. Some of the components of a lamp can be recycled, but not all of them. The glass from a lamp is permanently contaminated and cannot be used as glass again. Sometimes, the glass can be added as a feedstock for concrete, asphalt or other building materials. If it cannot be recycled there is a beneficial reuse as daily cover for landfills to prevent birds and other wildlife from entering the landfill and spreading waste to surrounding areas. The mercury is isolated, retorted and sold back into industry. The end caps and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals are also removed and returned to industry.

LED stands for light-emitting diode. LED bulbs are extremely long-lasting, with many rated to last over 20,000 hours, which is over 13 years if used 4 hours per day. They can replace most traditional bulb types and offer numerous advantages like using 80% less energy and containing no mercury. While initially more expensive, LED bulbs save significantly on energy costs over their lifetime and typically pay for themselves within a few years. LEDs produce high quality, warm white light and are very environmentally friendly due to their energy efficiency and lack of mercury.
The document provides a definitive guide to LED lighting, including:
1) LEDs are solid-state devices that emit light when electricity flows through them, and can replace traditional lamps.
2) Key advantages of LEDs are dramatic reductions in energy consumption and costs, increased lifespan and durability, and reduced CO2 emissions.
3) On average, customers save 86% by switching halogen or incandescent lamps to LEDs, and 50% by switching CFLs to LEDs.
This document compares the energy efficiency of different types of light bulbs: halogen incandescents, CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps), and LEDs (light emitting diodes). It states that halogen incandescents are more efficient than traditional incandescents but still waste most of their energy as heat. CFLs use one-fourth the energy of incandescents and last 10 times longer. LEDs are the most efficient, using only 20-25% of the energy of incandescents and lasting up to 25 times longer, making them the clear winner despite their higher upfront cost.

LED mild bulbs for residences are the newest technological rave. "LED" means "light-emitting diode," a semiconductor light resource that was learned to be a functional electrical element in 1962. The technologies has grown and matured given that the initial discovery and is also now emerging to be a mainstream substitute option for the 100+ year outdated incandescent bulb.
Businesses are adopting LED lighting for its significant advantages over older lighting technologies. LEDs use far less energy than incandescent or fluorescent lights, produce less heat, and have a much longer lifespan which reduces maintenance and operation costs. Today's LEDs are appropriate for nearly any commercial application and provide attractive, high-efficiency lighting while saving on energy and maintenance expenses over the long run.

Lighting and Appliances
Anything that draws electrical power is referred to as a load. Part of weatherizing a home includes minimizing the loads in the home in order to lower energy bills and maximize energy efficiency.
Artificial Lighting
Artificial lighting is provided by electricity, fixtures, and bulbs. Artificial lighting is a big contributor to high energy costs. It can contribute as much as 50 percent of the total energy costs of a home.
Lynn Clement of Focus on Energy once said, “If every American household replaces light bulbs in their five most frequently used fixtures with ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent bulbs, we could save more than $8 billion in annual energy costs and prevent greenhouse gases equal to the emissions of more than 10 million cars.”
Since lighting accounts for 20 to 25 percent of U.S. energy consumption, the move to more energy efficient lighting is very important.
Types of Lighting
There are three primary uses, or functions, for lighting in homes: task, ambient, and accent. Task lighting provides light to perform work. Ambient lighting may include light that is used for work but also includes lighting for safety and security. Any lighting used for contrast or ambiance is accent lighting. There are many different types of artificial lights available for residential uses.

The document compares different lighting options for energy conservation. It states that compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, last 10 times longer, and are less expensive over the long run. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) use even less energy than CFLs and can last over 50,000 hours. The document also provides tips for optimizing air conditioner usage and reducing energy use from computers, laptops, and other office electronics through practices like using sleep mode and switching off monitors when not in use.
The document discusses the federal government's ban on incandescent light bulbs effective January 1, 2014 and the more energy efficient alternatives consumers will have to choose from. It describes the key characteristics of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), light emitting diodes (LEDs), and halogens. While CFLs and LEDs save energy, they have higher upfront costs. LEDs have longer lifespans than CFLs but performance in cold weather is still a concern. The author believes the ban was premature and that the LED industry needs more time to improve before incandescents are fully replaced.
This document provides a product catalog and introduction for LED lighting products from Genta Energy. It highlights the energy efficiency, durability, and quality of LED lights. The catalog includes specifications for various LED light products like bulbs, downlights, track lights, and outdoor lights. It also provides case studies on the financial and environmental benefits of LED lighting compared to other options.

LED lights are the need of every home. LED lights provide a wide range of advantages. It is a solid state lighting device. It works on semiconductor material which utilises much less amount of electricity. LED lights use a driver(semiconductor chip) which changes AC to DC(Alternating current to direct current). Each DC operating device utilises much less energy as compared to other AC products.
LED lights are an energy efficient lighting technology that uses semiconductors to convert electricity into light. They use 85% less energy than halogen or incandescent bulbs and have a much longer lifespan. While CFL bulbs are also energy efficient, LED lights are better suited for decorative lighting due to their flexibility in design and ability to change colors. LED lights provide many benefits such as long life, energy efficiency, being eco-friendly, and ability to withstand rough conditions. However, most LED lights emit a blue light that uses phosphors to create white light, decreasing efficiency and limiting light in the green and red spectra, though this is sufficient for many applications. LED lights are generally more beneficial than CFLs due
Many consumers are still wondering how many LED watts they will need to replace an existing light fixture. And many of the vendors are all too willing to respond with the watts of their product that they think will work. The problem is selling LED by watts is extremely misleading.
LED light bulbs have several advantages over traditional light bulbs like CFL and incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs are highly efficient, using 6-8 watts of electricity compared to 13-15 watts for CFL bulbs. They also have an extremely long lifespan of 50,000 hours, around 40 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Additionally, LED bulbs remain cool to the touch and produce virtually zero UV or infrared emissions, making them safer and more environmentally friendly than other options. The Indian LED market has grown significantly in recent years and is expected to reach 30 billion rupees by 2022.

Plug-In Screw-In
Ballast is part of Light Fixture Ballast built into lamp
Better Dimming with compatible ballast
Dimming is possible, not as reliable.
Only with “dimmable” lamps.
Fixtures require specific lamp type to
function properly.
Usually any screw-in CFL will work.
Overall: Better performance over
time and with dimming however a
tighter specification is required.
Overall: Lesser performance over
time and poorer dimmability, but
easily replaced for different light
source without replacement
fixture.
LED
Integral Screw-In
Lighted LEDs are separated from
transformer gear. Both are required to
create a complete fixture.
LEDs and transformer are integrated into
one light source which is powered by the
fixture’s screw-in socket.
Better Dimming performance with
correctly specified power supplies and
dimmers.
Dimming is possible with standard gear
but not as reliable.
Usually a complete fixture must be
specified to work properly, LEDs
power supply components and dimming
components are all part of LED fixture.
Sources are design to screw into any
fixture with a medium screw base.
Overall: Better performance from
a well-specified system with the
capability to customize to specific
needs. Higher cost, more difficult
to replace components
Overall: Good performance as a
light source. Not customizable but
lower cost of entry assuming you
already have fixtures with screw-in
sockets.
4. CFL vs LED
Brightness
Brightness
All light sources are capable of getting very
bright. What matters for your business is
how much energy do they consume to
make light. The chart to the right
compares how much light (lumens) per a
single watt of electricity used.
5. CFL vs. LED
Color
Color
Figures to the right are based on
averages taken from experience.
LEDs vary WIDELY in color quality.
It should also be noted that many
consider CRI an antiquated scale to
discuss color quality.
7. CFL vs. LED
Lifetime cost
Lifetime cost
This is a very simple example based on a small
cafe which has a total of 18 recessed down
lights in it’s ceiling. The example looks at the
10 year cost of CFL versus LED when you
combine replacement cost and electrical cost.
This model assumes the cost of LEDs and
electricity remains static over a decade.
8. CFL vs. LED
Lifetime cost
Lifetime cost
The truth is over the last decade electricity
prices have gone up on average 2.9% per
year. Here we see that LED actually saves
money over time despite higher replacement
costs.
9. So What’s Right For
Your Business?
How long will your business be in it’s current location?
The longer you plan on staying the more you should consider LED.
What kind of business are you running? Does great color and
dimming matter?
If so, you might want to consider LED.
Is Energy Conservation a core value of your business?
There’s no comparison - for energy savings always go with LED.
