Gamification techniques are being applied to learning management systems (LMS) to increase student engagement and motivation. Game elements like points, levels, challenges, and leaderboards are added to traditional LMS to inspire competition and make learning feel more like play. These gamified LMS aim to improve learner retention and performance through intrinsic and extrinsic motivators.

- Other trends just aren’t right for everyone… And some people just don’t know how to put it all together.
- So how do you know if gamification is right for you? Let’s start by talking about what the term means..

- It’s taking what’s addictive about games and using those techniques to motivate and engage.
- The Fitbit & its dashboard is an example of digitally engaging people to achieve goals.
- Failure rates for gamification are high - Gartner predicts that, this year, 80% of the current gamified applications by companies will fail to meet business objectives.
- Just like you set goals on your Fitbit dashboard, gamification design starts with clearly designed business goals. But that’s not enough….
- But the game needs to focus on the personal goals that motivate people.
- You need to find a way to monetize your game that makes sense to the players. Make sure that if will motivate them, not just provide you with what you want to measure for your corporate goals.
- Because one of the prime success factors in gamification is motivating people to engage – you’re not going to get the climber up the mountain by telling her how many minutes she’s spent climbing.
- You also have to engage people at an emotional level. It’s one of the reasons that many of the popular games use social media to connect to people’s competitive and social natures.
- Friendly competition is an emotional motivator for many people, particularly those in naturally competitive job roles, such as sales people.
- Badgeville, which is an analytics company, used gamification to get sales people to use more of the features of Salesforce, with rewards and levels tied to usage.
- The reason that example is good is because the gamification was integrated into the process, not just thrown on top – gamification should not increase the work.
- Which is why you probably need to think outside of the LMS box, or you very likely will create barriers to engagement.
