This study compared cervical spine (C-spine) motion during intubation using the AirTraq laryngoscope versus the Macintosh laryngoscope. 24 patients underwent both types of intubation while C-spine motion was recorded via fluoroscopy. C-spine motion was significantly less (average 66% less) using the AirTraq at 3 of the 4 measured motion segments. Intubation time did not differ significantly between the two devices. The AirTraq may be useful for limiting C-spine movement during intubation, particularly in situations where C-spine movement is undesirable.
