This session will take place without the instructor. Students are required to visit the Jameel Gallery AND the South Asian Gallery (on Islamic art and Mughal objects) at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Students are then asked to submit ONLINE, by SUNDAY 3 MARCH, a written GALLERY REVIEW on their visit (2,000 – 3,000 words.), in which they:
- Briefly outline the main features of their chosen exhibiting space;
- Choose and discuss at least FIVE art pieces, providing a short art-historical analysis, a relevant bibliography and set of illustrations for each of them;
- Briefly consider the interaction between Western and non-Western art.
Make sure you describe all your chosen objects in a way that is meaningful and art-historically relevant (facts and dates).
Your report should reflect both the academic research behind the curating of your chosen space (how well is it curated, in your opinion?) and your own personal ideas (it should be a mixture of both).
Finally, don’t forget to structure your essay rigorously,
weave your observations within a coherent and cohesive framework,
and provide original and meaningful conclusions.
Students who fail to visit this museum and submit their written report will be marked as absent and receive an F for this assignment.

Organic design

This exhibition will explore liquid metals and how they blurred the distinction between art and nature in Netherlandish gold and silver objects from the 1600s. Visitors will view a selection of auricular ornaments, mainly created by the Vianen family, that took fluid, organic forms resembling sea creatures. The exhibition layout aims to reflect this fluidity, with objects placed on different levels like waves and projections of ink waves displayed. It will challenge viewers to see these pieces not as purely artistic but as living creations that combine art and nature.

Culminating Project Final
The Warner Theatre in Erie, Pennsylvania was commissioned in 1929 and opened in 1931 at a cost of $1.5 million. Designed to be Erie's first deluxe downtown movie palace, it featured rich tapestries, mirrors, and other ornate decor. While much of the historic lobby and facade remain intact, a modern annex was added, connecting the past with the present use of the theatre which still hosts Broadway shows, concerts, and other performances.

Tissa ranasinghe
Tissa Ranasinghe is a renowned Sri Lankan sculptor known for his bronze sculptures. He has received extensive training and education in sculpture. Bronze is his preferred medium, as it can last for generations and flow into his characters from myth and religion. Some of his major works include large bronze statues of Sri Lankan leaders and Buddhist sculptures. His sculptures often reinterpret traditional concepts and confront reality in a way that invites viewers to examine their own faith or beliefs.
Organic design
This document discusses organic design in architecture through several examples. It explores works by Frank Lloyd Wright like Fallingwater which was designed to blend with nature. Other architects featured include Alvar Aalto and his organic Savoy Vase as well as Charles and Ray Eames' flowing La Chaise chair. Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum is described as resembling fish scales. Jorn Utzon captured the essence of nature in the Sydney Opera House's shell-like roof design. Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal emulates flight through curving forms. Overall, the document shows how these designers found inspiration in nature and incorporated natural, organic elements and shapes into their works.
Thailand Arts and contemporary culture
Thai traditional arts are strongly influenced by Buddhism and feature distinctive architectural styles, crafts, paintings, carvings, and sculptures. Woodworking, lacquering, plastering, and other crafts are an important part of Thai culture. Traditional Thai music and dance vary by region but are graceful performances that have been influenced by neighboring cultures like China, India, and Cambodia over centuries. Contemporary Thai art now incorporates modern styles as well.

This exhibition will explore liquid metals and how they blurred the distinction between art and nature in Netherlandish gold and silver objects from the 1600s. Visitors will view a selection of auricular ornaments, mainly created by the Vianen family, that took fluid, organic forms resembling sea creatures. The exhibition layout aims to reflect this fluidity, with objects placed on different levels like waves and projections of ink waves displayed. It will challenge viewers to see these pieces not as purely artistic but as living creations that combine art and nature.

Riyoo Kim is a Japanese ceramic artist who draws inspiration from traditional Jomon pottery as well as modern street culture influences. Kim creates contemporary ceramic works that explore themes of identity, spirituality, and the relationship between the visible and invisible. Kim's ceramic pieces are characterized by unique patterns and symbolic motifs like eyes. Through ceramic art, Kim seeks to recognize the inner space as a metaphor and have a dialogue with others. Kim's works have been displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally.
Open and Participatory Museums
Dr. Mariana Salgado discusses participatory design in museum exhibitions. She presents three case studies of interactive exhibits she designed that encouraged participation: Sound Trace at the Ateneum Art Museum in 2005, Conversational Map at Kunsthalle in 2005, and The Secret Life of Objects at the Design Museum Helsinki in 2008. Salgado advocates for open content and participatory practices in cultural institutions through networking organizations like Open GLAM Finland.
Australian indigenous art guide for beginners
Australian indigenous art tells stories from the Dreaming through paintings that connect to the land. The most famous recent indigenous art has come from the Utopia region in central Australia, where artists like Emily Kame Kngwarreye pioneered painting on canvas with acrylics in the 1980s. Their vivid paintings featuring animals, landscapes, and Dreaming stories have received worldwide acclaim and can be found in major galleries. Today over 250 artists in Utopia continue producing diverse works that astound with cultural richness.

When visiting, Nadia Khan saw exhibitions on Arts of Korea and a sculpture of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. The Arts of Korea gallery showcases Korean artworks such as pottery, metalwork, and lacquerware dating from the 11th to 13th centuries.
1.Prehistoric
The weekly agenda includes introductory lessons on prehistoric art from August 24-26, culminating in a Socratic seminar debate on whether graffiti is a valid art form on August 27. A quiz will follow on August 28.
