This document provides instructions for creating slab-built boxes in 3 steps: 1) Choose a theme or design, 2) Create a box form out of paper or cardboard to use as a pattern, 3) Make the clay box by rolling out slabs, cutting out the pattern, layering between towels and boards, and reinforcing connections with coils. The document encourages creativity and lists artists whose work is included.

together to create a
mock up of your
design

Make your Box
Roll out slabs
Texture and/or smooth
Cut your pattern out of clay (your
paper box is you pattern)
Layer between dry paper towels
and boards for straight slabs
Or use while soft for curved forms

20. If box is square or rectangular Bevel the edges!

21. Remember to Score and Slip!

22. Don’t forget to reinforce your connections with a
coils. Smooth out your coils.
