Media Censorship
Maite, Mich
Censorship Definition
- Censorship is the blocking or banning of
something you see, hear or read. For example,
the sound of bleeping when someone is
talking on tv or radio, that is censorship.
Main Types of Censorship
- Modifying/Altering Censorship: This type of censorship allows an individual or
group to change history, and make people believe something never existed.
- Destroying Censorship: Destroying censorship removes or eliminates
information that can be useful to other people which can create harm
principally.
- Withholding Censorship: Withholding information is when news are released
but many aspects are banned or hidden so the spectator does not get the
truth.
- Self Censorship: Covers the part in which an individual or group decides to
hide information for their benefit.
Altering
In this example we can see altering censorship. The video talks about how
Googled altered the results that came up when people searched for “Hillary
Clinton”. It claims that all the websites related to the candidate were altered in her
favor.
Destroying
After releasing a book, Kindle realized it didn’t have the correct license
requirements. SO instead of admitting the mistake and getting the licence
required, they just wiped out the book from all the devices even if people had
payed for its content.
Withholding
After realizing that the administration results for 2012 weren’t the expected ones,
the government just withheld this informations from the people.
Self-censorship
After the Pakistani government authorized a shooting attack in one of the stations
for this channel. The government suspended its license to prevent the channel
from releasing this news.
Conclusion
In conclusion, censorship is a phenomenon which has a very important role in
media nowadays. Supposedly censorship is for the good of people, but for
example, hiding information of what is really happening in your country is not the
right thing to do. This phenomenon happens whenever some people succeed in
imposing their personal political or moral values on others.
