India is the second largest cement producer in the world, with nearly 300 million tonnes of annual production capacity. The private sector dominates production, accounting for 98% of total capacity. Large cement plants with capacities over 0.5 million tonnes per year comprise 97% of total installed capacity. The states of Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu account for the majority of large cement plants. Cement demand is expected to grow substantially over the coming years, driven by growth in infrastructure and real estate development.
