In the 18th Century the government instigated a ban on the import on furniture thus igniting one of the greatest cultural contributions to the history of furniture making. As a result of the ban - national furniture making took off creating Masterpieces that would change the history of antiques.
In 1846 the guild system dissolved in Sweden and the carpenter's strict quality controls ceased. Cabinetmakers were now able to freely practice their craft. During the second half of the 19th century it became more common with machine-made parts and the handmade furniture decreased most significantly and unfortunately so did the quality.
Much of the Swedish furniture currently available on the "antique" market has been comprehensively rebuilt and restored, often repainted in popular pale colors and sadly some of these created or "style" pieces are sold as period. It is paramount to pay attention and look closely.
During the 80’s and 90’s a lot of furniture with original color was unfortunately destroyed by chemicals.
In conclusion: Pieces that look Gustavian but were made one or two hundred years later or even last year are properly designated in the Gustavian style.

Signed burr mahogany drop-leaf Edwards & Roberts sofa table, made in London, c1870. Edwards & Roberts, famous English furniture makers, was established in 1845 at 21 Wardour Street, London. They occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street by 1892, and successfully continued to trade there until the end of the century. This pretty low pedestal has been painted by a previous owner with beautiful flowers and musical detail (see inset). The drawer is stamped inside with “Edwards & Roberts”.

They occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street by 1892, and successfully continued to trade there until the end of the century. This pretty low pedestal has been painted by a previous owner with beautiful flowers and musical detail (see inset). The drawer is stamped inside with “Edwards & Roberts”.

- 1. THE CELTIC CULTURE By Ropergo
- 3. The Celts were people that lived in some parts of Europe lots of years ago.
- 4. They were from different parts of Europe: - Scotland. - Ireland - Wales - Bretagne (France) and Galicia.
- 5. They lived in little houses in villages.
- 6. In Galicia there were some of these villages BAROÑA SANTA MARIÑA (Cervantes)
- 7. Their houses were circular and made of stone and straw
- 8. Some houses here in Galicia are similar to the Celtic houses
- 9. There is rock art in all these countries
- 10. In Galicia too!
- 11. These are some Celtic symbols
- 12. You can see these symbols in horreos in Galicia too!

- 15. MATERIALS WOODEN PLATE SANDPAPER WOOD STAIN BRUSHES
- 17. ACETATE RAZOR KNIFE GOLDEN PAINT STICKY TAPE
- 18. HOW TO DO CELTIC PLATES 1.-Look for the pattern you want to paint on your plate and draw it on a piece of acetate. (Be aware that not all the patterns are good for this work.) 2.- With a razor knife go along the lines of the pattern and cut until you have created the template to paint. Pay attention to leave lines of acetate in between the spaces you will paint)
- 19. 3.-Rub the plate with sandpaper 4.-Paint the plate with wood stain and let it dry.
- 20. 5.-Rub the plate with sandpaper and clean it. 6.-Place the template on the plate and paint with golden paint. 7.-Remove the template 8.-Nail a pin at the back and hang it!
