Daphne Odjig was a Canadian painter born in 1919 in Ontario to a First Nations father and English mother. She grew up in a First Nations reserve but was later sent to Toronto after becoming ill at age 13 and her mother's death at 18. Odjig worked in museums and learned about art, being influenced by Picasso, Munch, Cubism, and Expressionism. However, she incorporated First Nations styles, colors, and shapes into her paintings about family and nature. Odjig helped develop a contemporary Indigenous art movement in Canada.
