The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was adopted by the UN in 1979 to comprehensively address women's rights. 185 countries have ratified CEDAW, but the US has not, despite a Senate committee recommending ratification in 2002. CEDAW has been effective in many countries in opposing discrimination and promoting rights related to violence, poverty, inheritance, and political participation. However, the US remains concerned about sovereignty and legal issues if it were to ratify.
