Nepal made a significant improvement in the field of Openness, especially in Open Data. The government showed some commitment by starting a discussion and made some notable decision to promote the culture of collaboration. This was made possible because of the active participation of CSOs and grassroots awareness. Civic technology has been the backbone, projects like Open Data Nepal, AskNepal etc are making an impact. In the session, I will share how we can run the grassroots awareness to create an inclusive ecosystem and use civic technology to develop reliable products.

"Más Tecnología, Más cambio"? Investigating an educational technology project...Emeline Therias
For my MSc dissertation, I investigated the strengths and limitations of two different projects (One Laptop Per Child and Blue Sparrow) that provide technology to schools to help development in emerging markets. I spent one month conducting ethnographic research in rural Peru, to understand how these types of projects can be successfully implemented in future, and any lessons learned from their approach. These are the slides I used to present this research at CHI conference 2015.
I gave this presentation to broadcasters from 17 countries that participated in a workshop on Emergency and Disaster Management in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Few countries can boast having a third of its GDP stored as mobile money in the hands of a telecom group. There is no miracle in the rise of MPesa, but a deep understanding by Safaricom of the social fabric of East Africa’s tech and economic hub, as well as a lots of test and try. The lure of mobile money have lots of startups competing into this space, to connect remittances, shopping and payments to the MPesa infrastructure. Other than that, Kenya is also experiencing a double motion in its innovation ecosystem: if it’s definitely a community-driven startup hub, its government is also playing a key role through laws and pharaonic projects.

Humanitarian emergencies: searching for Open Data - OKCon2013Anahi Iacucci
While a growing conversation is happening around Open Data as a driver for development and accountability, little, if any, is being said about the role of open data in humanitarian emergencies. While we ask governments to open all their data as a duty towards their citizens, humanitarian organizations seems to be pretty much left outside. Is there a need for open data in the humanitarian community space? What would it look like? Are transparency and accountability strictly linked to the healthy recovery of communities in emergencies? This talk will look at some of those questions and try to propose some solutions, drawing from the long-standing experience that Internews has in media and communication with communities during emergencies.
This is a presentation I gave at the OKCon on a Meetup on GeoData moderated by Hannes Gassert, Open Knowledge Foundation Switzerland and with Barbara J. Ryan, Secretariat Director of the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO), former Director of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Space Programme, Francesco Pisano, Director of Research United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), responsible for UNOSAT, Emanuele Gennai, Esri Global Affairs Executive as panelists.
Geographic data has become key for a wide range of applications: almost everything people do happens in space. Understanding a city, a refugee camp, or an illegal settlement would not be possible without well managed geodata. Such geo data thus is very valuable indeed, and is considered proprietary, although it’s usually captured and managed with public effort. On the other hand everybody with a GPS device can become an online map maker almost instantly, and powerful community efforts have already created impressive results. During humanitarian or environmental crises, readily available open data and data sharing is needed urgently, and at scale – better data fast literally saves lives, and collaborative efforts are very much needed for an effective disaster response. This meetup brought together four panelists, each of them having unique geo data stories to share. Panelists were asked how open geodata is important to their activities, how they managed to achieve open geodata goals, and what challenges they faced while developing open geodata policies and systems.
Crowdsourcing, Mapping and Verification - PICNIC2012Anahi Iacucci
Crowdsourced information can play a crucial role in unexpected circumstances like political uprisings and natural disasters. But how can the data best be verified and what is the role of the media? With the expansion of social media and live mapping, crowdsourced information has begun to play a significant role in sudden, unexpected circumstances such as natural disasters and political uprisings. So is it possible for humans to replace algorithms in certain situations? Volunteer contributions have the potential to save lives and support local communities, but the real challenge is verifying crowdsourced information and "big data" – particularly in crisis situations requiring accurate validation under significant time constraints.

Improving Workplace Safety Performance in Malaysian SMEs: The Role of Safety ...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT: In the Malaysian context, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) experience a significant
burden of workplace accidents. A consensus among scholars attributes a substantial portion of these incidents to
human factors, particularly unsafe behaviors. This study, conducted in Malaysia's northern region, specifically
targeted Safety and Health/Human Resource professionals within the manufacturing sector of SMEs. We
gathered a robust dataset comprising 107 responses through a meticulously designed self-administered
questionnaire. Employing advanced partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques
with SmartPLS 3.2.9, we rigorously analyzed the data to scrutinize the intricate relationship between safety
behavior and safety performance. The research findings unequivocally underscore the palpable and
consequential impact of safety behavior variables, namely safety compliance and safety participation, on
improving safety performance indicators such as accidents, injuries, and property damages. These results
strongly validate research hypotheses. Consequently, this study highlights the pivotal significance of cultivating
safety behavior among employees, particularly in resource-constrained SME settings, as an essential step toward
enhancing workplace safety performance.

ABSTRACT: Although a significant amount of literature exists on Morocco's migration policies and their
successes and failures since their implementation in 2014, there is limited research on the integration of subSaharan African children into schools. This paperis part of a Ph.D. research project that aims to fill this gap. It
reports the main findings of a study conducted with migrant children enrolled in two public schools in Rabat,
Morocco, exploring how integration is defined by the children themselves and identifying the obstacles that they
have encountered thus far. The following paper uses an inductive approach and primarily focuses on the
relationships of children with their teachers and peers as a key aspect of integration for students with a migration
background. The study has led to several crucial findings. It emphasizes the significance of speaking Colloquial
Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and being part of a community for effective integration. Moreover, it reveals that the
use of Modern Standard Arabic as the language of instruction in schools is a source of frustration for students,
indicating the need for language policy reform. The study underlines the importanceof considering the
children‟s agency when being integrated into mainstream public schools.

Editor's Notes
Hello my name is Anahi Ayala Iacucci and I work for Internews Network as Media Innovation Advisor for the Africa Region. Internews is an international media development organization whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.
In January 2011 Internews create an Innovation Center for Research and Learning with the scope to harness the potential of digital technologies and innovative approaches to better meet the information needs of communities around the world. The Center aimed at becoming a hub to inform and engage others in the fields of media, information technology and development.
But why and organization that deals with Media decided to create an Innovation Center? The reason is that while some time ago media was the main channel for information collection, sharing and distribution around the world, today the landscape is a bit different. Media is not anymore then only actor and the landscape of information systems looks like this one. Media is not anymore the only actor and the focus needs to shift from traditional media to alternative information systems.
In August 2011, Internews led a communication and information needs assessment conducted with Radio Ergo/International Media Support (IMS), Star FM of Kenya and with support from the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). This assessment aimed at understanding the information needs of refugees in Dadaab and exploring ways to improve the flow of communication between refugees, aid agencies, and host communities.
Our goal was to better understand and document the local information ecosystem (i.e. how the information flows, the main and most trusted sources of information, the local media scene, how people share information: it is radio, phone, friends and family, TV…), and provide humanitarian agencies, ourselves, and radio stations with recommendations to communicate better, 2-way, with affected communities.
The assessment team trained a group of local volunteers from NRC, young men and women, on using smart phones with data collection software designed by Episurveyor to conduct the interviews for the survey. This was a pilot, and we wanted to get rid of stacks of papers and hundreds of questionnaires and, more importantly, be able to provide data and analysis in real time.
“Do we collectively know what the so-called beneficiaries, what their problems are or what they really think and want? We need to include them in the conversation. Otherwise we are blindly assuming we know the right answers.”
