Software Defined Radio (SDR) allows electronics in radios to be virtualized through software instead of dedicated hardware. This presentation discusses how SDR can offer lower costs, faster development times, and the ability to reuse applications and components across different devices. An example is given of how a government agency's existing public safety radio system could be updated through SDR to add new capabilities like electronic IDs and QR code scanning, using existing smartphones and other devices instead of specialized hardware radios. The presentation concludes by asking if end users and manufacturers have wanted smartphone-like features in traditional radio systems, and if SDR could provide a way to virtualize such systems through software.
