Systems Technologies: Introduction to Computers
1.1 A Computer
It is an electronic device which is capable of receiving information (data) in a particular
form and of performing from and of performing a sequence of operations in
accordance with a predetermined but variable set of procedural instructions(program)
to produce a result in the form of information or signal.
Figure 1: A picture of a Computer (PC)
You probably already know that you can use a computer to type documents, send
email, play games, and browse the web. You can also use it to edit or create
spreadsheets, presentation, and even videos.

Computer Management
5.1 Concepts of data and information
5.1.1 Data
The term data refers to factual information especially that used to analysis and
based on reasoning or calculation. Data itself has no meaning, but becomes
informative hen it is interpreted.
5.1.2 Information
Information is a collection of facts or data that is communicated. However, in many
contexts they are considered and are used as synonyms.
5.2 Data vs Information
Data are calculated and processed on a daily basis through computers in business, at
home, and in education. Data are essentially the raw facts that are usually typed into
a computer. We call these “raw” facts due to them being unorganized. They can come
in any form from audio and visual, to text and numerical. When the data is entered into
the computer that is considered input. The computer calculates the data and splits out
the information. Since this information is the output, it is considered information
processing. Data can also come in other forms including figures, experiments, and
surveys. Most everything that is entered into a computer becomes data, which is why
this is so vital to understanding computers and how they operate. Information is form
of knowledge and computers calculate detailed information.
