Introduction
Classroom unit plans are documents used by teachers to map long-term plan throughout the school term or a year. Teachers should have a long-term unit plan that sets their goals and objectives throughout the term in a bid to enhance student performance. Teachers should be able to understand their students as different students come from different backgrounds and environment; exhibiting different personalities, traits, and intellectual capabilities. Students behave differently whenever they are in school and at home and this defines their ultimate achievement.
Some students come from very poor background while others come from rich families and this could contribute to the variations in academic performances; which is the ultimate goal behind learning institutions. Lack of enough learning materials such as stationeries and classrooms could reduce leaning efficiency. Some of the students are drug addicts and lack proper parental guidelines leading them to mischievous behaviors’ thus creating an environment not conducive for studying. A well designed unit plan will enable teachers to plan their work well and this l also favors the weak students who cannot perform very well in class.
First Step: Identification of the objective
The first thing that a teacher should do is to identify the content, unit title and the unit subject. The teacher should identify the area of study and the specific topics to be studied over that specific period. A mathematics teacher for example may decide on the topics to study such as algebra, subtraction, multiplication and division. However, teachers should be able to understand their learning objectives in creating a big goal and a long-term plan. The teacher should also be able to create two measurable unit objectives that will enable students to think critically as like align with the CCSS. A Physics teacher for example should make students to think critically in their practical work.
Teachers should be able to create a description of what they want their students to master and understand. Taking students out in the field will really make them understand what they are studying. An Environmental teacher for example should take students out for field studies to make them think critically through exposure.
Second step: Evidence of learning, pre-assessments, formative assessments and summative assessments.
· Pre-assessment: In this step, teacher should be able to detect the preparedness of the students. They should test the thinking of the students if indeed their thoughts are in the content of the subject that is about to be studied. In this case, teachers should be able to understand the interest and capability of the students before the learning process begin. Besides that, teachers should be to identify the learning materials.

After looking at the Immigration Lesson Plan and reviewing the learning objectives, I
believe the entire lesson unit is able to engage the students in learning along with incorporating
the five characteristics to providing a quality curriculum. I know the objectives are aligned
because the lesson can be adapted to the different grades from third to fifth. There is also a list of
the extension activities so the activities can be used. This lesson plan also focuses on improving
and developing student understanding on the immigration era and how the immigrants came to
the United States.
This unit is able to help the students to develop prior knowledge by asking the students if
they know if any of their family members had immigrated or if they know if anyone has. One of
the activities that peaks my interest is the audio tours that would help the student to use their
imagination so they could feel what it is like to be an immigrant.
Some activities that could be added to the lesson would be to recreate a replica in the
classroom of what it was like for immigrants to go through Ellis Island. Assign the student to
learn about a different country then have the students go through the line.
Yes the work asked of the students is simple enough but the lesson plan can also be
adapted using a Knowing, Understand and able to do Chart. In the text it mentions the
importance of using learning tasks that encourage the students to use their essential knowledge
and making sure the students are able to understand the true meaning of what they have learned.

The content can make a difference because this unit lesson actually engages the students
and the different activities can be made to work individually or within a group setting. The goal
of this unit helps to incorporate the students taking a trip and talking to someone who has
immigrated to the United States.

- 3. Summary of unit In this unit students will learn the key components of light. Students will learn how light travels. They will also learn how light shines through different materials.
- 4. Role of teacher As a teacher, my role will be facilitating the hands on learning. I will encourage students to get into projects or experiments and really work with the task at hand.
- 5. Role of the parent As parents, I ask that each of you encourage your child. It is important for parents to show their children that learning is very important and that grades matter. Students need to feel what they are doing in class is worth their time. Please assist your students with homework and help them in any way possible.
- 6. Role of student The students’ roles in this unit will be to experiment. Students will be expected to use critical thinking skills, and attempt to apply what they learn to real life.
- 7. Benefits of the unit This unit will prepare students for higher science courses in the future. This unit also allows the students to participate in Project Based Learning.

Standards This unit will meet the following state standard SC.4.3 Recognize how light interacts with transparent, translucent, and opaque materials.Students will be able to identify whether an object or material is transparent, translucent, or opaque. Students will be able to predict how light will reflect on a material or object. SC.4.9 Describe the appearance and movement of Earth and its moon.

- 10. What is project based learning Project-based learning is a form of learning much deeper than the traditional textbook instruction. Students experience project-based learning through working with groups of other students in a real life situation. While students are learning life applicable situations, they are also learning across the curriculum. PBL also allows students to be graded on performance instead of just an essay or written work. This can be beneficial for students who are not always the best performers when it comes to written work. Project based learning is a great form of instruction because it shapes more than a student’s mind. It helps to shape his or her communication skills, research skills, and organizational skills.
