CASTRATION
Castration or neutering refers to surgical removal of both testicles
from male animals.
Indications:
 Castration is performed to reduce over population by inhibiting male
fertility.
 Decrease male aggressiveness.
 Undesirable urination behavior
 It helps to prevent androgen-related diseases.
 Other indication for castration include congenital abnormalities,
testicular or epididymal abnormalities, epilepsy control and control of
endocrine abnormalities.
Trapped by and site:
Jahan Zaib Ahmed trapped the wild cat (Tom) from CHANNA STREET KOTRI.
Transported by Hasnain and Asad.
Tom was kept off-feed for 8 hours.
Tom Breed:
A mix breed of Khao manee+ Cyprus cat breed and Ojos Azules.
Medications like Xylazine and Ketamine, suture material (Silk) were bought by
Haseeb and Jahan Zaib.
Tom was brought at the Department of surgery and Obstetrics on Wednesday to
perform castration.
3
Principles of Surgery:
Surgeon preparation:
All group members were wearing scrub suits, gloves, surgical masks and surgical
caps.
Instruments preparation:
Instruments required for feline surgery were selected and all these instruments
were sterilized properly.
Patient preparation:
Physical examination, temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, body weight,CRT
were recorded before surgery to make sure that animal was fit for surgery.
BCS: 03 (Ideal).
Body weight: 5kg
Healthy cat: Fit for surgery.
4
Anesthesia:
Drug dose calculation was done by Shahzeen, Maria and Haseeb.
Ketamine:0.8mg/ml
Xylazine:0.125mg/ml
Time of induction of anesthesia:12:49 p.m.
Rataba injected the anesthesia (IM injection).
Cat was not completely sedated so, incremental dose was given.
Ketamine : 0.5mg/ml.
Xylazine:0.2mg/ml Time : 01:01 p.m.

} 0.9mg/ml (combine dose was given).

Placement Of Cannula:
IV catheters provide a pathway into the vascular system for fluid, blood products
or medication administration and allow multiple blood samples to be drawn within
minimal patient discomfort. They are most commonly used to administer drugs
and fluid therapy. As the catheter is introduced directly into the venous system it
must be placed in an aseptic manner to help prevent sepsis and other
complications.IV catheters are most commonly applied in the cephalic vein in
cats.
Hair should be clipped large enough that the entire catheter hub, connections
and of course insertion site is hair free. Hair clipping was done by Imran kalhoro
and Haseeb.
Maria and Kinza placed the IV cannula.Time: 01:00 p.m.

Abdul Haseeb did the Flushing:
A saline flush is a mixture of salt and water that is compatible with cat’s body
fluids and tissues. It is used to push any residual medication or fluid through
the IV line and into the vein. This keeps the IV line clean and reduces the risk
of infection or occlusion.
Body Parameters were regularly observed during surgical procedure by
Maleeha and Warda.
CRT: Normal(Less than 2 seconds).Time : 1:12 p.m.
Respiration:20 times per minute.Time : 1:20 p.m.
Pulse rate: 130 times per minute.Time : 1:22 p.m.
Pupil size: Normal
Eye ball position central.
MONITORING OF ANESTHETIC DEPTH:
Palpebral reflex absent.
Jaw tone relaxed. Time:1:28 p.m.
Jaw tone rigid. Time:1:33 p.m.
Palpebral reflex present (Blinking). Time:1:34 p.m.
FLUSHING
7
Start of Surgery:
Feline Castration:
Pluck hair from the scrotum rather than clipping. In kittens less than 16
to 20 weeks of age, plucking scrotalhair may be difficult. Use clippers
to gently remove scrotal hair. Position the cat in dorsal or lateral
recumbency with the hind legs pulled cranially. Mobilize a testicle in
the scrotum by applying pressure with the thumb and index finger at
the base of the scrotum. Make a 0.5- to 1-cm incision over each
testicle at the end of the scrotum from cranial to caudal . Incise the
parietal vaginal tunic over the testicle and exteriorize the testicle.
Digitally separate the attachment of the ligament of the tail of the
epididymis to the vaginal tunic . Double ligate the spermatic cord with
*3-0* absorbable suture or hemoclips, or remove the ductus deferens
from the testicle and tie it with the vessels. Alternatively, use a figure-
eight knot.Transect the cord, inspect for bleeding, and replace it
within the tunic. Excise the second testicle in a similar
fashion.Resect any tags of tissue protruding from the scrotum. Allow
the scrotal incision to heal by secondary intention.
Alternatively, to ligate the ductus deferens with the vessels, separate
the ductus deferens from the testicle. Using the remainder of the
spermatic cord (testicular vessels and testicle) as one strand and the
ductus deferens as the other, tie two to three square knots (five to
six throws). Sever the vessels with attached testicle and ductus
deferens distal to the knot. Inspect for hemorrhage two to three square
knots (five to six throws). Inspect for hemorrhage.
First testicle was castrated by Rataba and second one by Maria.
Jahan Zaib sutured the incision site with 3/0 silk, non absorbable,
multi filament suture material by using Simple interrupted suturing
technique.
04 stitches ( 02 Stiches at 01st incision and 02 stitches on 2nd testes)
were given at incision site, First NS and than pyodine was applied.

9
Than, after surgery anti inflammatory drug was given by Asad and
Hasnain.
Ketogesic (Ketoprofen): 0.2cc (IM).
Standard dose recommended for cats is 1mg/kg.
10
Post Operative Care (POC):
Abdul Haseeb, Jahan Zaib and Hasnain did POC
11
Lincocin injection was used 1cc (IM) in bicep femoral muscle.
Stiches were removed on January 7th
2023, under Short term
anesthesia by Abdul Haseeb, Jahan Zaib, Imran and Husnain by
using small Littaeur scissors.
On January 8th
,2023 Tom was released at Hyder Chowk near
Black & Brown bakery Hyderabad; Time: 2 p.m.
