- MESSAGE: while our schools have continued to make improvements in reading and math (as you can see) [next slide]
- The challenge we are faced with boils down to competing forces of time and continued improvement: we still need to achieve substantial gains within a short period of time. The consequences of this otherwise, is a possible 2012 decision to "re-constitute" or re-design the school(s) in one of four ways -- all of which are imposed, all dramatic and all likely to be disruptive if not destructive.
- At the surface there are many competing forces – a system that was designed for an industrial economy as we propel ourselves into a knowledge economy don’t always match up; there is the pull of universal standards and yet the desire to allow for individual learning; and we want to always gather best practices from research and data, and figure out a way to use that with the inherent strengths of our community
- And to add to that, are layers of emotions:We fear change and yet we know we need to; we are skeptical about this whole thing but want to be hopeful because the consequences appear dire; and there’s a lot of anxiety and discomfort around all of this.
- You might be thinking to yourselves seriously? This is the impossible climb
- …or much like trying to plow snow in the middle of a huge field, while it’s getting ready to snow.
- But much like the story of stone soup, this is an opportunity for the community to come together to create something powerful. The story talks of 3 tired soldiers who were travelling and come upon a village. The residents, seeing them approach, hide their food for they don’t have a lot of it and don’t want to share. But rather than demanding or pointing fingers or getting upset, the soldiers put a pot of water on the fire and threw in some stones. And slowly, they asked for ingredients in small amounts – carrots here, potatoes there. And as the residents retrieved these ingredients, the result was a delicious pot of soup that everyone could enjoy.This is an opportunity for us as a community to come together, and create a recipe for success on our terms and with the things we already have. And best of all, we come together with the common commitment to ensure that our young people have the tools they need to thrive after high school and beyond.
- So as a community, we’ll work to put the pieces together.
- Where that leads us, then, is that we’ve spent a lot of time dissecting the community – looking at the various slices and stakeholders, as well as the scale.
