SAFE, an Italian oil and gas compressor manufacturer, was experiencing fatigue failures in piping systems due to high vibrations caused by pulsating pressures. To address this, SAFE performed mechanical response analysis using Intergraph's CAESAR II software to evaluate natural frequencies and stress levels. This allowed SAFE to consider flexibility factors and avoid failures. SAFE also used CADWorx Plant Professional for its piping 3D models, realizing 70% time savings from automatic CAESAR II model generation. Going forward, SAFE plans to use Intergraph solutions to improve pulsation analysis capabilities and satisfy their complex needs.

Arkansas Steel needed to improve yield and better meet customer’s unique recipes. Manual data collection and reporting, however, slowed their ability to make process improvements. By deploying FactoryTalk VantagePoint EMI from Rockwell Automation, Arkansas Steel automated the aggregation and reporting of data, helping increase yield by at least 3 percent.

Pulsation and Vibration Study Of Reciprocating Compressor According To API 6...IJMER
The compressor package contains the reciprocating compressor, pulsation dampers, gas coolers and the connected pipe system which are often the heart of an installation and should be operate smoothly and reliably. The compressor piping vibrations can contribute to fatigue failure of the system or entire package which can lead to unsafe situations for human being as well as environment,
loss of capacity and increase in maintenance as well as repair cost and to avoid this situation compressor piping vibration analysis to be carried out at a very early stage of the design of an installation. The pulsation analysis should be carried out before the piping vibration analysis. The
guidelines for the pulsation analysis are given in API 618 Approach 2 and the guidelines for the vibration analysis are given in API 618 Approach 3. The original system layout is checked with respect to pulsations with all operating cases that are characterized by steady-state operating conditions. The different gas properties and operation cases are considered with valve unloading cases as operation
cases. The measures are proposed to reduce pressure pulsation by installation of orifices. The shaking
forces are used in the subsequent vibration study. After the analysis of pulsation results, find out the worst case for the vibration study means we used the shaking forces induced by pressure pulsation excite the mechanical piping system of worst case. The Vibration Study determines the effect on the mechanical piping system and proposes measures to avoid stresses possibly leading to deformation or rupture by fatigue. The finite element program ANSYS is used for modeling of the mechanical system. The model is built of several types of basic piping elements (e.g. pipes, beams, elbows, T-pieces) connected at node points. The odifications are proposed to meet agreed criteria of vibration. This paper demonstrated that by properly analysising the compressor piping vibration in an accurate and economic way using Pulsim and Ansys software. The accuracy of the analytical solution is validated by
means of experimental results by using B & K Analyser for the measurement of compressor piping vibration.

Simulation enables shipbuilders to shorten their engineering development cycle by troubleshooting designs
using virtual prototypes. Simulations of virtual prototypes provide not only gross performance parameters,
but also detailed phenomenological data and the insight needed to make design decisions quickly, with confidence and authority. For example: the impact of appendage placement on a hull can be quickly assessed to
determine the optimal location; sail designs can be easily optimized; stress concentrations in structural
members can be efficiently identified and reduced; and electromagnetic interference can be determined
and mitigated.
Lower Cost and Higher Quality
Identifying problems with virtual prototypes not only saves time, it also reduces development costs and improves
quality, safety and reliability. Parts and systems work as expected, with fewer surprises. The effect of different operating conditions and environments — such as different flow profiles entering the
propulsion system — can be readily assessed. Thicknesses and fiber orientations in composite structures can be quickly determined. Vibrations and fatigue can be minimized,
and explosions and safety hazards mitigated.
Innovative Design
Innovative designs often require innovative engineering solutions. For example, the design of cargo space with
fewer pillars requires a novel structural solution to support the applied loads. A longer cargo room
requires a shorter engine compartment and a novel hull form. Using simulation, innovations in materials can be
exploited with greater confidence. Such innovations need to be modified extensively to realize practical designs.
Simulation guides these modifications and steers the solution to an optimal design.

Oil & gas station manufacturer avoids fatigue failures with improved natural
frequency analysis
IDENTIFYING GOALS
Since 1975, SAFE has been a key player in the Italian oil and gas industry with its
proprietary design and production of compressors, producing tailored and optimized
solutions for the market. Since 2007, SAFE has been working together with GE Oil
& Gas Nuovo Pignone to package, sell, and service GE High-Speed Reciprocating
Compressors worldwide. Presently, SAFE has an oil and gas product portfolio which
ranges from a few kW to 5000 kW machines. SAFE’s own proprietary design and
production compressors are used for small and medium applications, while GE HSR
compressors are packaged for larger services.
Currently, SAFE is involved in the design and production of four gas compression skids
for onshore and offshore applications in southern Italy and Congo.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
While working on the project, the engineers at SAFE quickly noticed that fatigue failures
of main piping and small-bore attachments, as well as piping supports degradation,
were common problems associated with compression skids. This is due to high
vibration levels caused by pulsation-induced forces.
This kind of pulsation can cause excessive vibrations and cyclic stresses for the skids.
Therefore, SAFE quickly realized that a mechanical response analysis of the system was
necessary to keep the vibration and cyclic stress levels within allowable levels to avoid
fatigue failures during the early stage of the design process.
REALIZING RESULTS
SAFE chose Intergraph CAESAR II to perform mechanical response analysis according
to the API 618 standard to avoid these challenges. CAESAR II was chosen due to its
modal and harmonic analysis, and it has proven to be an efficient tool to evaluate the
