Research Paper: Topic Proposal and Outline Instructions
The easiest approach for selecting a topic for your paper might be to review the various subject areas covered in the course readings (i.e., search the bibliographies of the textbooks). Although the chosen topic must relate directly to the general subject area of this course, you are not limited to the concepts, techniques, and technologies specifically covered in this course.
Each Topic Outline must include the following 3 items:
1. A brief (at least 3–4 bullets with 1–2 sentences per bullet) overview of the research topics of your paper – you will need to address these in the actual paper. This will be titled “Research Objectives”.
2. A list of at least 3 questions (in a numbered list) you intend your research to ask and hopefully answer. These must be questions that will require you to draw conclusions from your research. These must not be questions to answer your research objectives. This section will be titled “Questions”
3. At least 3 initial research sources, 1 of which is an academic journal or other peer reviewed source. These should match APA formatting of sources.
Example formats for Topic Outlines (an example, not a template):
Research Objectives
· Briefly describe the overall concept of system integration.
· Discuss the traditional approach of big-bang integration including the major advantages and disadvantages of this approach.
· Discuss the traditional approaches of top-down and bottom-up integration and their major advantages and disadvantages.
· Discuss the traditional approach of mixed integration, combining the desirable advantages from the top-down and bottom-up integration approaches.
Questions
1. Why is system integration an important step in the software development process?
2. Why has big-bang integration not survived as a useful testing method?
3. Why have top-down and bottom-up integration not been replaced by more modern methods?
4. Why would you use mixed integration all the time rather than sometimes using top-down and bottom-up integration exclusively?

However, doing this at submission time means that this additional information is not available for older content. This raises the question of how we can utilise the author’s input on new content to create the same feature retrospectively to the whole Elsevier corpus. Focusing on one use case, we discuss how an extractive summarization model (which is trained on the user-submitted summaries), is used to retrospectively generate executive summaries for articles in the catalogue. Further, we show how extractive summarization is used to highlight the salient points (methods, results and finding) within research articles across the complete corpus. This helps users to identify whether an article is of particular interest for them. As a logical next step, we investigate how these extractions can be used to make the research papers more discoverable through connecting it to other papers which share similar findings, methods or conclusion. In this talk we start from the beginning, understanding what users want from summarization systems. We discuss how the proposed use cases were developed and how this ties into the discovery of new content. We then look in more technical detail at what data is available and which methods can be utilised to implement such a system. Finally, while we are working toward taking this extractive summarization system into production, we need to understand the quality of what is being produced before going live. We discuss how internal annotators were used to confirming the quality of the summaries. Though the monitoring of quality does not stop there, we continually monitor user interaction with the extractive summaries as a proxy for quality and satisfaction.

Give a brief introduction of this paper as it is the final draft. In this section include the names of the studies that were critiqued in the qualitative and quantitative sections below with the cited reference after the name of each study. The graded assignments from weeks one, two and three should be the basis for this assignment. The corrections made for all sections of those assignments according to the instructor’s comments should be clearly present. Do not include the instructor’s comments. Just make the corrections and put them in the proper places noted by the headings below. Throughout this paper, you should use spell check and grammar check always. Speak in the active voice and not a passive voice. Support statements with references. Use citations in all sections when references are made to the study or studies used in this paper. (Keep the word count between 1500 and 1750 words. Going outside of the word count will cause a 10% deduction of total points.)
Nursing Practice Problem and PICOT Statement
Nursing Practice Problem
State the practice problem that is relevant to nursing. This should be an extension of the PICOT question that was in the introduction of the literature Search on Week 1 of this class. The PICOT question should support the nursing practice problem with current research. Be clear, concise and relate the problem to nursing practice. State how current research supports this problem. Describe the relevant details and explain how the PICOT statement is linked or related to nursing practice. Current research must be used to show how the PICOT supports the nursing practice problem.
PICOT Statement
State the PICOT statement in a question. State the PICOT question using the format noted in the article on “EBP- Step-by-Step- Asking the Clinical Question: A Key Step in Evidence-Based Practice” by Stillwell, Fineout-Overhold & Melnyk (2010) found with the template for this assignment. Discuss the link betweenthe PICOT question, the nursing practice problem & evidence-based practice change how they are connected to relevant details supporting explanation.
Qualitative Study
Background of Study
Keep this section to just the criteria of the qualitative study. The clinical and research problem of the study, significance of the study, purpose of the study and main research question or hypothesis should be described briefly in this section.
Methods of Study
What qualitative methods were used to answer the research question stated above? Were there quantitative and qualitative studies of the literature review relevant to the focus of the study that were cited by the author? Were the references current? Were there weaknesses of the available studies us.

NURS 6052 – Essentials of Evidence-Based Practice
Week 3 Initial Discussion Post
The Role of Theoretical Frameworks in Research
Research is a process of evaluating a concept or theory concerning a specific subject. Analysis of a theory includes examining the behaviors and characteristics of people and how they interact with biological, interpersonal, and environmental factors (Polit & Beck, 2017). Every theory attempts to explain phenomena and how they are related to a specific purpose. Valid research uses a theory or model as the building blocks. Nursing theory relies on models to define what nursing is and the processes involved in providing care (Polit & Beck, 2017). In this post, I will examine a research example that has adopted different theories and models to design, implement, and evaluate health promotion efforts (Joseph, Daniel, Thind, Benitez, & Pekmezi, 2016).
Research Review
Finding research related to nursing theories and models was an easy task. Many fundamental nursing policies and procedures are founded on either a theory or a model. For this paper review, I chose the transtheoretical model which states that “transition from one stage of change to the next are affected by processes of change” (Polit & Beck, 2017, p. 124). The research paper was focused on reviewing numerous theories used to assess long-term maintenance of physical activity, weight loss, and smoking cessation (Joseph et al., 2016). Within this research, the authors referenced five prominent behavioral theories which are self-determination theory, the theory of planned behavior, social cognitive theory, transtheoretical model, and the social ecological model (Joseph et al., 2016). The paper excluded studies that referenced cognitive behavioral therapy used for intervention. PubMed and PsycINFO were used with relevant search terms and Boolean operators. Each article was then reviewed by three different reviewers.
Transtheoretical Model
In this article, the transtheoretical model (TTM) was used to define and recognize behavioral change through natural processes. The total number of participants was 20,645 with over 65% of participants being female with a mean age of 49.9 years (Joseph et al., 2016). TTM is a combination of behavior change theories and psychotherapy (Joseph et al., 2016). TTM presumes people move through the five stages of behavioral change which are precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance in a cyclical manner instead of a linear route (Joseph et al., 2016). Often participants in the study found themselves making progress with physical activity, weight loss, and smoking cessation only to regress creating a cycle of one step ahead and two steps back(Joseph et al., 2016). Relapse is a common occurrence with TTM for new patients and long-term patients. Maintaining the stage of change can be challenging due to intrinsic and extrinsic.

Case Study #1 – Break Even Analysis
Scenario: (hypothetical)
Paper due – day 7
Break-even exercise
Break-Even Analysis or Cost Volume Profit Analysis (CVP)
The California Medical Hospital is a full service hospital in Burbank, CA. Kathy Potts, the Chief Surgeon and Regina Johnson, the Hospital Administrator, have been working on a project to bring a new product to their hospital, knee replacements, to expand the services provided in hopes of bringing in additional revenue.
After much analysis and market studies the two are ready to present their findings to the board. You are the Finance Director who has put the information together.
They have decided that a new knee replacement will cost $17,000. The supplies used will cost the hospital $9,500 and the selling expenses paid amount to $3,000 per knee. The wing they will use will rent for $15,500 per month and the surgeon will receive a fixed salary of $25,000 per month. (Show your work on all problems)
1. Determine the number of knee replacements (in units) that particular wing must perform each month to break even. (Break-Even Point or BEP). In other words how many knee replacements must the surgeon perform each month to break-even?
2. Determine the number of knee replacements that particular wing must perform in order to generate a profit of $100,000 per month.
3. Assume that the surgeon can now open a clinic on his own with the following costs:
Variable costs = $9,500 per knee
One additional employee at a cost of $1,000 per month
Everything else remains the same from above
Determine the number of knee replacements to break-even.
4. Determine the number of knee replacements needed to generate a profit of $100,000 per month
What scenario would you recommend and why?
5. Please graph scenario #1 only. Use EXCEL to draw the graph. Label the X and Y axis. Plot the break-even point and show the fixed cost line. ( I only want to see three lines on the graph and the rest should be labelled)
6. Define break even analysis and its importance in the health care industry
7. Define variable costs
8. Define contribution margin
9. Define fixed costs
10. Compare and contrast a variance analysis and a sensitivity analysis

Assignment 3: Course Project
Note: At the end of Module 8, you will have a final project of putting together a survey report. This paper will include a supportive rationale for your survey, survey instrument, data file, and analysis plan. Each module you will have an assignment that helps you work toward the goal of completing your final project.
In this module you will work on developing a topic for your survey and identifying your research hypotheses.
An important part of this course is the development of a survey project. There are many steps to successfully completing it, and each module will be arranged to guide you to finishing the project in portions.
To start your project off, you will need to identify your survey topic.
Every survey starts with a purpose, hypothesis, and statement/topic. Before you begin your survey, it is essential that you develop a basic understanding of descriptive and predictive surveys, exploratory research, and how to develop a hypothesis.
Identify a survey topic. Make sure it is narrow.
Identify the main variables of the study you wish to propose. List them below. Put an IV next to the independent variable and a DV next to the dependent variable.
Discuss the purpose of your survey.
Briefly discuss the type of research you are doing as to whether it is causal or correlational. Be sure to refer to Appendix B in your book (Alreck & Settle) to insure you address key issues about external validity.
Develop the hypothesis or hypotheses for your survey. In order to keep your survey focused, you should have no more than 3 sets of hypotheses
Briefly explain how you plan to design your course project. Briefly justify how it is that you think using a survey best serves your research question.
Technology Check-up

Strategy: Choices and Change
Assessment Brief: Individual Strategic Change Case Study Analysis
(60% of module mark)
You are required to produce an analytical paper of c2,500 words (up to 3,000 words), based on the Ascension plc case study and the 3 questions on the next page. Your paper should demonstrate your ability to apply a range of strategic change models to gain constructive insight about the change process within the technical engineering division (TED).
The case study: The case study is on weblearn and is 3 pages long. You must base your analysis on the case study; you are NOT required to do any additional research on the organisation or industry. The questions, the assessment criteria, report structure and some suggested reading can be found on the next two pages of this briefing.
Use of tables: For each question you must apply one or more change models (as per the questions on the next page). You must create a table or diagram containing each element of the model and populate it with data from the case study using bullet points. The information in tables, diagrams or the end reference section will not be included in the word count. There are marks awarded for “application of key models using relevant data from the case”.
Discussion of table content: It is not enough to just populate the tables. For each model you must also discuss your findings (in full sentences after the table). Do not mention everything in the table. Tell the reader what the most important factors are based on your analysis. You can use the prompt notes in the questions to help e.g. to focus your discussion on the most challenging aspects of the change context for question 1. There are marks for “Discussion of findings demonstrates depth of understanding of the case and the theory and some originality in thinking.” So, if you just have the table and no discussion or discussion but no table then you will lose valuable marks.
Evidence of academic reading: for every question you must demonstrate some academic reading about the model you are using (academic text books or academic journal articles rather than internet sources). However, you should not describe the models in detail e.g. you don’t need to explain what Johnson means by ‘stories’ or ‘symbols’; it will be clear from your analysis that you understand this. You should reference your academic reading using the Harvard system (at least four different academic sources). An example could be to use the core text book and find a quote where the authors explain the purpose of the change kaleidoscope. Books and articles that will help with this are listed on the page 3 of this briefing. There are marks awarded for “evidence of academic reading. At least four different academic sources cited” so you will lose marks if you don’t do this. You must use in-text references (in the main body of your report) and an end reference list. You will lose valuable marks if you simply list four different books at the end of.

Professor and Class,
As the cost of living continues to increase, the longer individuals are needing to work. Therefore, individuals are working past the retirement age to continue to collect a steady income that will help them pay their bills effectively. Some underlying situations that contribute to discrimination by age is the details presented in a job qualification. Many employers expect individuals to have a bachelor or master’s degree, which is fine. However, many baby boomers received their degrees many years ago that detailed outdated information than what is presented now within a college course. Employers will need to reconsider the word format when drawing up a job qualification and maybe detailed individuals to have certifications because baby boomers could take steady training and classes to obtain certifications to stay up to date on present issues within their field of business. I believe employers should consider having a multi-generation leadership team because this could increase diversity and inclusion and have employees feel comfortable that there is opportunity to grow regardless of age. Also, employers should train employees regularly as technology continues to expand. That way many baby boomers are feeling left out when new technology is presented, and they have the choose whether to learn and continue to grow or retire due to the new demand of technology. Either way employers have to adhere to the Title VII and not discriminate on any employee or potential hire due to age but rather look into their qualifications, job performance and skill set to determine the appropriate candidate for a job.

At my job there is a power struggle between the old timers and the new administration. The old timers are vested, know their jobs and voice their opinions without fear of losing their jobs. The new administration is mid-thirties with little experience and instead of looking to the seasoned employees for wisdom and protocol, they overlook them, implement new technology without training and encourage them to retire early. When new positions open they require technical knowledge that most older candidates wouldn't be familiar with, require arduous activities, expensive family health care plans and offer low salaries that experienced candidates would reject. It's all a ploy to hire younger workers that will follow directions unchallenged. The down side is that our turnover occurs at about a year and a half for new hires. I believe older employees value stability and feeling fulfilled at work. Younger generations are ok with bouncing from job to job frequently. I think employers can diversify their hiring by putting focus on ability to complete tasks rather than assuming age is a liability. Taking the date of birth off applications is also a way to reduce potential discrimination. Also implementing some diversity training that shows value for older employees and identifying how different age groups co ...

Monique Wrote:

The painting "Kokopelli Composition" by Elena de Compostela contains many hidden details and symbols that invite deeper analysis. It depicts three pots, a glass vase with 16 flowers, and a black cloth backdrop on a wooden table. While most would move on, taking more time reveals further meanings. The painting engages the imagination and leaves the viewer wanting to uncover the artist's intentions.

2. During the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572, more than 13,000 French Protestants (Huguenots) were killed because of their religious beliefs. Based on the information in our textbook and any other research you might do, who do you think was most responsible for the religious tensions getting out of control and erupting into widespread bloodshed? Why?
3. People rarely make decisions based on one single factor. In the quest to discover new lands, establish trade routes and colonize, what do you think motivated the explorers the most? Be sure to discuss at least one specific explorer in your post.
Student Response #1 – Shannon
During the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572, more than 13,000 French Protestants (Huguenots) were killed because of their religious beliefs. Based on the information in our textbook and any other research you might do, who do you think was most responsible for the religious tensions getting out of control and erupting into widespread bloodshed? Why?
Based on the information in our text books, I believe that both the Catholics and the Calvinists brought the religious tensions on themselves. With the birth of new religions on the rise there then became a power struggle among the religions. The Protestant Reformation that began set the way for religious extremism. " The agreement helped maintain a relative calm in the lands of the Holy Roman Empire by granting each ruler the right to determine the religion of his territory" (Hunt, p483) This opened the doors for many religious disputes to follow as the years went on. Each war started as a religious dispute but went on to reveal other motives, like political gains, power and greed. As time went on and religion began to spread and more and more people began to covert, there became major power struggles. When the bloodshed began with the Protestants and the Catholics not too much was solved after that, during the bloodshed, Catholic mobs killed over 3000 Huguenots in Paris. These wars about religion have simply paved the way through the years for more conflict regarding religion. I can t just blame one party and pick it to be responsible , i think all parties played a role in the tension caused by religion, each person wanted to believe in what they believed in and didn’t feel like it should have to be mandated.

Wendy was addicted to her morning cup of coffee. She had one cup be.docxwendolynhalbert
Wendy was addicted to her morning cup of coffee. She had one cup before leaving the house and usually picked up another cup from the coffee shop on her way to the office. This morning, the line at the coffee shop was too long; therefore, Wendy decided to get a cup of coffee from the vending machine at work. The coffee was so hot that Wendy dropped it all over herself and was badly burned. Wendy filed suit against the vending company, the manufacturer of the vending machine, the owner of the building and the distributor of the coffee. What rights does Wendy have? Explain Wendy’s case against each party and possible defenses by each defendant.

A researcher plans a study in which a crucial step is offering participants a food reward. It is important that the three food rewards be equal in appeal. Thus, a prestudy was designed in which participants were asked which of the rewards they preferred. Of the 60 participants, 16 preferred cupcakes, 26 preferred candy bars, and 18 favored dried apricots. Do these scores suggest that the different foods are differentially preferred by people in general? (Use the .05 significance level.)

The governing board of Religious hired a consulting company to evaluate its strategic performance. As part of the consultant’s evaluation, several leaders of Religious’ units were asked their perspective of the organization’s performance.
You are working for the consultant. Your job is to identify the issues from the response that should be considered further by the consultant team and possibly discussed with the governing board and the CEO. The firm has a rule, “Never offer a criticism or negative finding without suggesting how the client organization can correct it,” so you must indicate what sort of correction would be recommended as part of your list. Because you know there were about two dozen other interviews, you decide you should rank your issues in importance, to make sure the most critical are discussed.
Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:
Describe the five (5) important elements of the governing board’ s agenda for areas of improvement in core functions.
Many organizations now use a balanced scorecard or multiple dimensions of performance measurement, such as productivity, profit, market trends, quality, patient satisfaction, and worker satisfaction. Describe three (3) key performance dimensions (other than those mentioned here) and include specific measures that Religious Health Care could use to improve overall institutional performance.
Determine the performance measures Religious Health Care could use to evaluate nursing staff performance in its Emergency Room. Explain the rationale for each performance measure.
Suggest the steps that should be taken next by Religious Health Care to get better at managing specific patient groups. Explain the rationale for each step.
Decide what strategies Religious Health Care could implement to enhance its public image and increase market share. Explain the rationale for each strategy.

Additionally for the Week 8 discussion, consider media bias. Both conservative and liberal sides claim that there is media bias (to the other side of their beliefs) yet, it is evident that there is bias on both sides. It is no secret that the traditional views of the following 3 media outlets are as follows: Fox News--Conservative/Right, MSNBC--Liberal/Left, CNN--Moderate. A) Track a relatively current news story and report to the class the way the 3 media outlets presented the story. Were there surprises to you in your findings? B) Also pick one additional media outlet of your choice (perhaps NPR, AL JAZEERA , or BBC) and look at their perspective of the same story. Please comment on at least 3 of your classmates' postings with questions or thoughtful, respectful, thorough responses.

Week 7 Exercise Prosocial BehaviorMuch of what we tend to focus.docxwendolynhalbert
Week 7 Exercise: Prosocial Behavior
Much of what we tend to focus on when we study social psychology are topics that often have a negative connotation such as conformity, prejudice, aggression or obedience. A huge component of the study of social psychology; however, focuses on prosocial behavior – behaviors that focus on compassion and helping others. For this activity, you will focus on this more uplifting aspect of social psychology. Topics that fall under the area of prosocial behavior include altruism, helping, bystander intervention, empathy, and compassion, among others.
For this exercise, pick one day and seek to structure your thoughts and behaviors entirely around helping others. With each interaction or action you take, pause to think and ask yourself "is there a way I might help another here?" Hold a door for someone, offer your seat, share a smile, give a sincere compliment, show empathy to another, attempt to be more patient or understanding, etc. Your efforts should be in social settings that involve interactions with others (rather than something such as donating to a charity for instance). The goal is to be as thoughtfully prosocial in your interactions throughout the day as possible.
At the beginning of the day, jot down your general mood, feelings, attitude, etc.
Then throughout the day, whenever possible, carry a small notebook with you or make notes in an app on your phone to jot down meaningful encounters or experiences as you attempt to engage in prosocial behaviors.
At the end of the day, again reflect and take notes on how you feel, your general mood, feelings and attitudes, etc.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are unable to engage in prosocial behavior outside of your home due to COVID-19 restrictions/precautions, you are encouraged to engage in such behaviors with your family/people with whom you are sheltering.
You may also engage in prosocial behavior with others virtually or through other means (e.g., through video calls, emails, etc...). This assignment will be more meaningful if you are able to engage in-person with acquaintances or strangers, but you can still find ways to make a significant difference to others even if quarantined or sheltering in place.
In a 5-7 slide PowerPoint presentation, not counting title or reference slides:
Summarize your experience. Describe the prosocial behaviors you engaged in, others' reactions to these behaviors, and your assessment of any changes in mood, attitude, good fortune, or anything else of note you experienced.
Review what you have learned about human behavior in social settings this week in your readings. Connect what you learned or experienced through your day of conscious, prosocial behavior with the terms, concepts, and theories from your research. Integrate at least two academic sources (your assigned readings/resources can comprise one of these sources), citing any references used in APA format.
Describe any new insights you gained through this exper.

Week Lecture - Evaluating the Quality of Financial ReportsThe coll.docxwendolynhalbert
Week Lecture - Evaluating the Quality of Financial Reports
The collapse of Enron in the early 2000s, which was a result of massive financial manipulation, gave rise to a new era of financial reporting supervision with the establishment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002. The Act required all executives to give certified and accurate financial information. Various mechanisms were put in place to reduce financial accounting irregularities (Cunningham, 2005). Managers are therefore required to have a clear understanding of the regulations put in place and the bodies which enforce them in order to conform with them accordingly.
Issuance of financial reports and sale of securities to the public is monitored by such organizations as:
The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FIRA)
The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has developed the financial accounting standards to be used in the U.S. since 1973. Its function is to oversee the preparation of financial reports by non-governmental entities. FASB ensures that financial statements contain information relevant for sound decision making. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has been charged with the statutory authority of establishing reporting standards for U.S. public companies. Although it does not develop the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), it has power to monitor financial reporting. The SEC seeks its authority from three security laws: The Securities Act of 1933 (SEC, 2012b), The Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (SEC, 2012c), The Investment Company Act of 1940 (SEC, 2012a), The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SEC, 2005), and The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (SEC, 2014).
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FIRA) regulates securities firms conducting business with the public in the U.S. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) develops and Publishes International Financial Reporting Standards through the help of its 15-full time members from different countries working with stakeholders all over the world.
The usefulness of financial reports to readers depends on report quality. The conceptual framework for financial reporting categorizes qualitative characteristics of financial reports into two broad categories: fundamental qualitative characteristics, which include relevance and faithful representation, and enhancing qualitative characteristics, which make financial reports more useful and include comparability, timeliness, verifiability, and understandability. Presentation of financial reporting is limited by materiality and cost constraints. There exist differences in U.S. reporting requirements and the international requirements, although efforts have been undertaken to congregate the U.S. GAAP rules with the international financial reporting rules (Oxford Analytica, 2009). Differences in U.S. reporting req.
