This document summarizes the process of widening an existing bridge in the UAE. It faced several challenges, including replacing deteriorated bearings, repairing cracks and defects found after removing pavement, constructing approach slabs where there were none previously, addressing differences in cross-slope between the existing and new structures, protecting the deck from chemicals, and strengthening an existing pier with carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheets. These challenges were addressed through methods like jacking the bridge to replace bearings, repairing cracks, constructing new approach slabs, using leveling concrete to create uniform cross-slope, applying waterproofing, and installing CFRP sheets to strengthen the pier according to product specifications.
