Case Study Peter Jones
In viewing a case study with Mr. Peter Jones, it was brought to the counselor attention that Mr.
Jones referred to her by a co–worker who is concerned about his welfare. Mr. Peter Jones is a 51–
year–old heterosexual married African American male with nine children. He is a carpenter who is a
non–denominational worshipper. He is also a high school grade graduated. His wife is a homemaker.
Presenting Problem
The co–worker noticed Mr. Jones snappy attitude in conversation and he denies anything is wrong
while appearing fatigued. He works all the time and a caregiver to his parents.

Peter Jones, the counselor diagnose Mr. Jones as depressed because of burnout. The client weakness
is not being able to say 'N0.' Due to this fact his relationship with his wife is declining and he is not
getting enough rest. According to June Hunt, "Depression is anger turned inward. This anger causes
masked depression and keeps underlying bitterness from being exposed."(125) The counselor advise
the counselee to confront his depression and say 'No' to others and beside God, put his family and
himself first and get some leisure time rest. Kuyper argues, "that God's beneficence to the entire
creation compels Christians to serve God in every facet of life." People become burnout when God
is not sought first for his will purpose and plan. Monroe and colleague points out,"Life stress is
associated with cognitive–affective symptons. In other words, Mr. Jones allowed people to make
him think if he is not complying to their needs he is not doing the will of God; when in actuality he
is only doing busy work if not lead by God. Mr. Peter Jones needs to confront his depression, focus

Jim Jones And The People's Temple Analysis
The "Jim Jones & The People's Temple" article explained that Jim Jones was a notorious cult leader
of the Peoples Temple. He was self–appointed pastor from a church in the Midwest. The People's
Temple was founded in 1955 by Jim Jones, he created the church to create equality in races and help
other people in need. Jones wanted to create a communist community where everyone was in accord
and everyone worked together. When Jones moved his people to Guyana, South America, he
managed to get exactly what he wanted. The people called this new community Jonestown, many
people loved this town, while others began to question the environment they lived in. Jonestown
was completely surrounded by jungles and armed guards that guarded the town. To leave Jonestown

Representative named Leo Ryan decided to go to Jonestown to see how things were there. He
brought a film crew with him and a few other people that wanted to see Jonestown as well.
Everything seemed to be going well until a member of Jonestown gave Ryan a note telling him how
bad they wanted to leave. It was then very obvious that the people were being held there against
their will. The next day as Ryan and the other's that came with him began to board the plane to
leave, they were attacked and killed by five people. Jones got very scared what would happen once
The United States would do once they heard about the killing's. At this point Jones called for all of
his people to come together and he said they were no longer safe. He began to explain to them that
The United States would come to kill all of them and the only thing they could do to save them was
to kill themselves. Jones demanded them to drink Kool–Aid mixed with Cyanide and Valium. That
day, November 18, 1978, 912 people died from drinking the poisoned Kool–Aid, while 276 of them
were children. Jones was killed by a single shot into the head, but it is not known whether it was self
inflicted or if one of his people did

Jim Jones Shooting Essay
Jim Jones had many jobs before he became leader of the peoples temple. As a child he spent much
of his time alone. He began preaching at 10 years old after going on weekly trips to church with a
neighbor of his. He continued his strong religious beliefs when moved to Indianapolis with his
mother. Jones became a minister at a local church and held racially integrated services to the
church's displeasure. During the mid 1950's Jones opened his first church of The People's Temple
while still living in Indiana. As the cult grew in the 60's Jones relocated to Northern California and
soon after opened churches in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Followers of the People's Temple
often referred to him as 'father' or 'Dad'.

The days leading up to the suicides are vastly important in Jones' twisted reasoning in the decision
to make over 900 people commit suicide in the town pavilion. It started after reports of sexual,
mental and physical abuse in Jonestown had been reported to the US government. After hearing this
news Congressman Leo Ryan was flown into Guyana on November 14th with 31 others including
news reporters, photographers and worried relatives of The People's Temple members. Entry into
Jonestown was denied for three days before the group was welcomed into the town with dinner and
entertainment for the night on November 17th 1978. Throughout the night members of the group
were handed notes from Jonestown citizens asking for help defecting from the cult. The next day the
visitors began to leave Jonestown with the defecting members of the cult, this sent Jones into a
panic, he believed that the end was near for himself and The Peoples Temple. Jones sent gunmen to
kill the congressman and other visitors before they could leave, only a handful of 5 people were shot
and killed, including Leo Ryan. Jones then called for a White Night; getting nurses to create a
concoction of Kool–Aid/Flavour Aid and Cyanide; an extremely poisonous compound Jones had

Jim Jones Essay
The mass suicides, that took place under the influence of Reverend Jim Jones, can be explained
from a sociological perspective. By looking at how the group dynamics played into the outcome one
gets a better idea of the whys? of the massacre. The sociological explanation is but one way to
explain this horrific event. It is , however, the only one explored in this essay for reasons of
concision. At one level, the deaths at Jonestown can be viewed as the product of obedience, of
people complying with the orders of a leader and reacting to the threat of force. In the Peoples
Temple, whatever Jim Jones commanded, the members did. When he gathered the community at the
pavilion and the poison was brought out, the populace was surrounded ... Show more content on

Dread. Once a state of dependency is firmly established, the group's control over members' thoughts,
feelings, and behavior is strengthened by the members' growing dread of losing the group's
psychological support (physical threat also occurs in some groups), however much it may aim at
ensuring their compliance with leadership's often debilitating demands. Yes. Ordinary social
conditioning differs from mind control in two important ways. First, parents, schools, churches, and
other organizations do not as a rule utilize unethically manipulative techniques in socializing
children, adolescents, and young adults. Second, social conditioning is a slow process which
promotes and encourages an initially "unformed" child to become an autonomous adult with a
unique identity. Mind control, on the other hand, uses unethically manipulative techniques of
persuasion and control to induce dependency in a person with an established identity, which the
manipulator seeks to alter radically without the informed consent of his targets.   	Cult
leaders and members use mind control to inundate their message into the minds of prospective and
existing followers.Groups that demonstrate exaggerated devotion or commitment to some person,

Romantic Hero: Indiana Jones
Being a Romantic hero means possessing certain qualities that regular people lack such as doing
thing ordinary people can't do or doing something that will benefit the mankind. Indiana Jones:
Raiders of the Lost Ark is a 1981 American action–adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg.
This movie shows a hero, Indiana Jones, going through a lot and becoming a romantic hero by doing
the impossible.Steven Spielberg does a great job of showing the qualities of a romantic hero within
Indiana Jones with great usage of cinematic techniques and music, bringing out the hero in Indiana
Jones. In the movie "Indiana Jones the Raider of the Lost Ark" Jones shows many characteristics.
One of them was being able to do things ordinary men can't do. In the scene where Indiana Jones
had found where the Ark of the Covenant was located, and Jones and some friends went there and
they realized the bottom of the pit was covered with snakes. Jones might not fear a lot of things but
a snake was his biggest fear. For him to be a man and admit to his fear of snakes and overcome his
fear is a sign of a Romantic hero. Steven Spielberg shows the scene with scary music setting a

truck to stop the Nazis in their process of trying to destroy the world. This scene uses many camera
angles to show the courageous Jones from stopping the Nazis. The music used in this scene was
very dramatic and it makes the viewer intrigued and foreshadowing about what is going to happen

Was Jim Jones Good Or Bad
Jim Jones did a lot that seemed good in his life (Merlot). He worked with people of all different
backgrounds to make their lives better and wanted to solve social problems. He spoke against the
racist stereotype of the white man and towards the new idea of a united racial group. Jones also did a
lot of bad in his life. Jim Jones was the craziest religious fanatic to live during the 20th century
because he brainwashed most of his followers, abused his power, and led the largest mass murder
for that decade in a single event. Jones was born to a poor family in 1931 in Crete, Indiana. His
father was an alcoholic who had trouble keeping a job and a racist who associated with the KKK.

(McCormick Maaga) He would hold what he called White Night events where he would force the
followers to drink fake poison wine to test their loyalty. Jim Jones would even fake heart attacks or
act like he was getting shot during the White Night events to see who would try to help him, and
who would run. Deborah Layton Blakey lived in Jonestown for a few months before leaving in the
spring of 1978. After Blakey escaped she attempted to get government officials involved in the
problems going on in Jonestown, with little success. Blakey described the suicide plans in an
interview "We were informed that our situation had become hopeless and that the only course of
action open to us was a mass–suicide for the glory of socialism. We were told that we would be
tortured by mercenaries – were we taken alive. Everyone, including the children was told to line up.
As we passed through the lines, we were given a small glass of red liquid to drink. We were told that
the liquid contained poison and that we would die within 45 minutes. We all did as we were told."
(Ulman & Abse 1983, 653).
Some might argue Jim Jones did more good than bad. (thefamouspeople.com) He helped
communities and helped people feel accepted and loved and not judged during these hard times. But
although he did do a lot of good things for the community he still did more bad than good. He held

"Don't drink the kool–aid" is a phrase that was coined after the mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana
on November 18, 1978. James (Jim) Jones was a religious leader of the People's Temple cult and is
responsible for more the deaths of 909 men, women, and children through a mass suicide using
cyanide–laced grape punch. Aided by his high IQ and his manipulative ways, Jones was able to
carry out his communist goals. Jones managed to wipe out 909 people overnight which lands him a
well earned spot in history.
James (Jim) Warren Jones was born to James Thurman Jones and Lynetta Putnam Jones on May 13,
1931 in Crete, Indiana. During Jim's childhood, he was known to be an avid reader who studied the
works of Mahatma Gandhi, Karl Marx, Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin, and Adolf Hitler, taking note of
what caused their successes and downfalls. Jim's obsession with religion was fed by his struggle to
make friends and his fascination with death. Following the separation of Jones' parents, he moved to

Jones instructed the members to move to Redwood Valley, California for safety. At this point, Jones

Jones' favorite play that he did in this was Othello, in which he played Ajax, which was a brute of a
man (Cutruzzula). James had never played any serious characters up until this point, he usually
played the henchman that never seemed to have a brain (Cutruzzula). This role was one of his most
memorable ones for him and many others who have knowledge of it. He went on to play Ajax many
more times in Othello (Cutruzzula). He told a story of when he had his first stage injury. While he
was playing Ajax, one of the other main characters had a pole which was to be used in the scene
(Cutruzzula). The actor missed his cue and accidentally jammed the pole right into Jones' foot
(Cutruzzula). He then fell and his big toe skidded across the stage, which hurt even more. Jones then
had to be carried off of the stage (Cutruzzula). This was one of his first mistakes in a play and it has
shaped him since then to be a good actor even in a time of shock (Cutruzzula). We can see that he
knows how to handle himself by the numerous Broadway plays that he has been in over his lifetime

Jim Jones Cult Theory
Sociologists view cult behavior as a deviance from society's norm. There are many theories as to
why a cult leader forms a cult and how they garner such complete blind devotion from their
members. While researching Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple I discovered that this particular cult
adhered to several of the proven theories. Jones had few societal bonds and used fear and
intimidation to control his members. He was an extreme socialist turned communist; when his
original goals were met with resistance, he chose the path of rebellion, which was to reject society's
goals and seek to provide his own goals and means to accomplish them (Henslin, 2015). Jim Jones
was born in a small town in Indiana. His father was a disabled WWI veteran who ... Show more

Land was purchased in Guyana and The Peoples Temple relocated with the intention of forming a
utopian commune, more than 1,000 members followed Jones to Guyana (Rosenburg, 2016).
Unfortunately, there was nothing utopian about Jonestown. The commune was run like a prison
camp and Jones was in complete control of all members; no one could leave, phone calls to the
States were scripted, letters in and out were censored, and armed guards stood at the perimeters
(pbs.org). Since communications were severely restricted, Jones began preaching fear to maintain
his control; the Ku Klux clan was taking over American cities, nuclear war was on the horizon, and
concentration camps were being built to house blacks and political activists (pbs.org). He would
preach constantly over the loudspeaker, sometimes all night long, and initiated suicide drills, which
he termed "revolutionary suicide." These so called, "white nights", where he would give the
members a cup of red liquid that they were told held poison, which they were then ordered to drink.
Later, they were told it was not poisoned and they had passed the loyalty test (Biography.com,
2014). Jones told his members that, "their deaths would be honored by the world as a symbolic
protest against the evils of mankind." He would further tell them that the faithful would then be
transformed and go to live with him on another planet (Harary,

Jim Jones And The Jonestown Massacre
Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre
November 18, 1978, altered America, but the process leading up to that day began much earlier by a
mind only described as perverse. The Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ, Peoples Temple as
it is commonly referred, led by James Warren Jones blazed its own way into the history books with
what is still one of the most disastrous endings of a movement. Jim Jones is known for founding the
most infamous cult in American history; his reputation revolves around the manipulation of a
population, professing skewed values, controlling that population, and eventually destroying what
he created in a final act of domination.

As he grew up he began finding his interest in religion as he attended churches around town,
eventually obtaining a friendship with a minister at the Pentecostal church (Biography.com Editors,
2014). This friendship truly marked the beginning of Jones' religious fanaticism as it led to him
preaching to/at his community and friends, even though he only could hold a few. His devout nature
drove away many, but it was his view on other's behaviors that really caused his lack of friendships.
He regarded many behaviors to be sinful or wrong, which caused an anger towards the boys who
portrayed them if not a hostility. In her research paper, Antoinette Pick–Jones (2007) provides the
example "'...Jim was so upset with one of his friends for going home rather than going out and
witnessing, that he 'grabbed his father's gun and shot at the boys..."' which shows just how far Jones
would go if he felt like someone was acting in a sinful manner.
In terms of education Jones had a successful one that eventually led to him continuing onto
undergraduate work at Butler University and graduate studies at Indiana University. Right out of
high school he married a young woman, Marceline Baldwin, who was a nursing student that also
had a passion for Christianity that fit with his (Peterson, 2005). His area of concern revolved around
integration and communities that didn't have representation in both religion and ordinary public
affairs; a

Mass Suicide by Jim Jones' Cult
Jim Jones was the founder of the Peoples Temple; a cult best recognized for the mass murder/suicide
of over 900 people. Before the events that made him a part of history, he was seen as a man with
great charisma and visionary ideas; now he is viewed as a manipulator, abuser, and murderer. This
paper will explore the life of Jim Jones and with the use of psychological models, try identifying
abnormal behavior patterns. Jones grew up in Indiana with his mother and disabled, alcoholic father
in a small shack with no plumbing. His parents held very opposite views of race that would come to
influence Jones later in life. His father was said to be associated with the Ku Klux Klan, while his
mother was in support forward progress politics; Jones would come to side with the latter. As a
child, Jones studied Joseph Stalin, Karl Marx, Mahatma Gandhi, and Adolf Hitler (Reiterman,
1982). He would pick out the strength of each person and this is where he gained his knowledge that
led him to be in support of socialism. Jones was obsessed with religion as a child and would often
perform funerals for deceased animals; one of these animals came from when he stabbed a cat to
death. Jones showed many signs of intelligence; one being when he graduated from high school
early with honors (Jones, 2002). Jim Jones saw the application of the religion to spread his ideas;
socialistic ideas to be precise. He became a student preacher at a church but soon quit because the

Jim Jones And Charles Manson Persuasion
Cults
Two of America's most famous cult leaders are Jim Jones and Charles Manson, they are powerful
leaders that drove their followers to commit insanely violent, and crazy acts. Today, many people
wonder what gave those men such power to influence their followers to commit crimes.
Jim Jones, for example, was a visionary and he used religion to influence his followers to join his
"community". Jones persuasion was highly successful among the homeless, dispossessed, lonely,
and lower–middle–class. These individuals were drawn in large numbers to the Peoples Temple.
Using reams of personal documents and types of propaganda to recruit more people to Jonestown.
Jonestown gave them fellowship, a dream of social justice, social services clinics for free health
care, drug rehabs, legal aid, and a sense of purpose. Jones followers gave him all their worldly
possessions, money, and all the power he needed even though he was just as average as his
followers. Jones didn't start out as this powerful leader he came to be , he was born into a bitterly
unhappy home in Crete, Indiana. "Jones himself was also a drug addict, a sexual predator among
both sexes, and somehow he accomplished to fake to a large amount of people that he was against
everything that he was still doing in secret" (George Russell). Jim eventually found his place as a
member of a small Christian church in his home town. Jones said he joined the religion because he
never felt accepted, and he was drawn to fellow outcasts. He soon acquired a gift for charismatic
preaching and took it to neighborhoods that were populated primarily by African American in the
1950s. It was in these neighborhoods where he preached racial inclusion and gathered a mixed–race
congregation. This did not sit well with many people in this era before the civil rights movement,
and it added to his progressive reputation. He became head of the Indianapolis Human Rights
Commission, which is a large reason he would recruit different ethnicities to join his temple. Jones
also in order to get more members used informers in his audiences to get information out of the
unsuspecting faithful that he could reveal as evidence of clairvoyant powers, and he hired fake
invalids who would rise from

The Case Of Jim Jones And The Peoples Temple
The question of what defines leadership has been researched, written about, and debated throughout
history. In the simplest terms, it can probably be agreed upon that a leader is someone who has
people that follow them. Some leaders are able to make a deep emotional connection with their
followers. As history has proven, leaders can use this connection for various reasons, and sometimes
the leader's agenda is not in the best interest of the followers. In the case of Jim Jones and the
Peoples Temple, the power and influence certain leaders are able to achieve is illustrated through
Jones' ability to influence, manipulate, and ultimately be responsible for the death of his followers.
This case study introduces the reader to Jim Jones and his cult, the Peoples Temple. The
organization is described as a communal society, where "everyone would be treated equally and
share in the common good" (as cited by Ciulla, 2003, p. 193). Jones is described as a selfless leader,
who opened his group to society's outsiders. He was not interested in wealth, even though the group
accumulated a large sum of money, and is described as wearing borrowed suits and working over 20
hours daily. He was deeply devoted to his congregation and his idea of creating an "interracial
socialist community" (as cited by Ciulla, 2003, p. 194). As the congregation grew, however, Jones
began to grow his own legend. He made outlandish statements about being God incarnate, and his

Guyana Tragedy: The Story Of Jim Jones
Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones is a docu–drama that outlines the life of Jim Jones, and
how his work ended in a mass murder–suicide at Jonestown, Guyana on November of 1978. The
events that inspired the film has raised issues regarding the formation of cults, free will, and leaders'
rise of power. Jim Jones was always obsessed with religion when he was young. For instance, he led
a mock mass session where he stood in front of 4 or so dogs and gave "orders" to them. Mixed in
with that was the fact that his parents argued a lot. His father, in particular, was racist and against
young Jones's religious leanings. He left the family shortly afterward. The movie then pans over to

Leaders do not gain control overnight. This is a dangerously gradual process. The rationale is that
gaining trust and power over the people requires someone to do good monumental things initially.
As they gain respect, they gain power. People will be willing to follow they footsteps and make
tremendous sacrifices. That way, they can control them to do what they want to do, such as coercing
them to do something preposterous or against their own will. This can be related to sexual assault,
which is any sexual contact without verbal/physical consent. And most of it is related to alcohol,
where victims are too intoxicated to give explicit consent. The reason alcohol is involved because it
is difficult to sleep with someone while they are sober. This whole process is similar to the gain in
power and control. Most people are reluctant to the whims and will of a leader, so they must slowly
get into peoples' lives and then control them with an iron first. For communist countries around the
world, leaders are normally disappointed with capitalism and exploitation of the poor. They
promised of a utopia where there are no class restrictions and equality, but after they gained power,
the opposite happens. Anyone who opposes the leader/cult is killed. Stalin's secret police killed
numerous of Stalin's enemies. The Tiananmen Square Event in 1989 reflects the cult's will over the
people, where the military gunned down protestors. These events are results of cults and leader's
rule over their followers, but none is as significant as the tragedy in

Jim Jones And The Jonestown Massacre
On November 18th, 1978 what would become known as one of the most detrimental days for many
families occurred. Formally known as The People's Temple Agricultural Project or in short The
People's Temple, a substantial amount of citizens, most if not all of them being American were led
by Jim Jones in a term coined by Jones himself, "Revolutionary Suicide". Nine hundred and nine
lives were taken on that devastating day (McGehee). Jones used powerful methods of persuasion to
gather nearly one thousand members of the People's Temple to migrate to Guyana in South America
to form the settlement known as Jonestown. It is believed that Jim Jones chose the secluded location
of Guyana for the purpose of containing the citizens so they could not flee their new formed society.
Jones was for many of the members of Jonestown a father figure as most of the children on the
settlement called Jones father. The message behind Jones' society was acceptance, equality, and a
sense of belonging in the world. The mass suicide that occurred on November 18th, 1978 will later
be known as The Jonestown Massacre. Jim Jones founded the People's Temple in the 1950's. Jones
feared a nuclear Holocaust and persuaded his congregation to relocate to California. Although his
first congregation was a mainstream church, Jones did not believe in God (Pick–Jones). The use of
churches in Jones mission was just to help his cult grow. Jones is quoted, "He found it hard to

Rhetorical Analysis Of Jim Jones 'Death Tape'
Rhetorical Analysis: Jim Jones "Death Tape" One of the most significant artifacts from The Peoples
Temple is known as the "Death Tape" because it is the last audio recording of Jim Jones, which was
recovered after the mass suicide of he and his followers. That day Jim Jones effectively persuaded
more than 900 of his followers to commit mass suicide by reestablishing his strong credibility, using
persuasive tactics of love and fear, and by convincing them that suicide is the rational way and the
only way. Jones put himself on a pedestal during his speech, reestablishing his credibility with his
followers before convincing them to commit suicide. This credibility was already established prior
to the speech given in the "death Tape", years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Jones talks about the act of suicide he talks about it as if it were another friend sitting next to you
in church. Jones proclaims, "It is not to be feared. It's a friend...sitting there, show your love for one
another. Lets get gone." Jones made suicide appear to be positive solution for his followers; he
downplayed the act of suicide into the relaxed words of "Lets get gone". By doing so he played into
his followers emotions, making suicide appear to be the best solution. Jones isolated his followers
and made the Peoples Temple their only connection and family. Jones made the idea of separation
from the family not an option he was willing to accept; "We can't separate ourselves from our own
people. People twenty years laying in some old rotten nursing home." Jones made the decision of
suicide as the answer for himself and his followers. Jones then made suicide appear to be the only
option because separation from the family is not an option he accepted. Jones manipulated his
followers into thinking that any other option other than suicide was hopeless. He then made living
seem miserable, comparing it to rotting in a nursing home. Jones manipulated his followers into
believing that living was the bad way out and suicide was there way to love and

On November 18, 1978, followers of Jim Jones shot and killed United States Congressman Leo J.
Ryan and four others traveling with him on a fact finding trip to Guyana. Ryan was there to
investigate complaints about the community called "Jonestown," which was largely inhabited by his
former California constituents.
After murdering a United States congressman Jones knew the end of his rule was near. He ordered
his entire following, some 914 people, to commit what he called "revolutionary suicide." This
included more than 200 children.
The rise
Jones began his group in San Francisco and was once a respected community leader. He started
programs to help the elderly and poor. His circle of friends once included leading politicians, who ...

After the tragedy at Jonestown these politicians found it difficult to explain how Jim Jones so easily
took them in.
One of Jones' long time followers Tim Stoen explained, "There wasn't anything magical about Jim's
power. It was raw politics. He was able to deliver what politicians want, which is power. And how
do you get power? By votes. And how do you get votes? With people. Jim Jones could produce
3,000 people at a political event.''
Agar Jaicks, Chairman of the county Democratic Central Committee seemed to agree with Stoen's
assessment when he said, "What you had here was a ready–made volunteer workforce&he was very
strong&here was a guy who could provide workers for causes.''
Jones first step on his path to political influence began in the Fall of 1970. He created a fund for the
families of slain police officers. This was the beginning of a viable process he used to make valuable
friends through charitable contributions.
The first bad press Jones received in the Bay area was a somewhat critical story run by the San
Francisco Examiner in 1972. The paper exposed that Jones had claimed to be a "prophet" and said
he could raise the dead.
Perhaps to preempt any further embarrassment Jones subsequently gave out grants to 12
newspapers. He even bussed his people to demonstrate in support of reporters who had been jailed
for not revealing confidential sources. Ironically, the man who would later flee from the press and
oppress dissent within his

The Portrayal Of Archaeology In Indiana Jones Fox
Archaeology in the media is portrayed as very high risk and thrilling. Not to diminish the excitement
of archeology, but the portrayal of archeology in movies is extremely exaggerated and far from
accurate. In Indiana Jones Indy is often plagued by so many forces that try to set him back from his
archaeological goals. He faces looters, booby traps, destructive weather, etc...
Looters, while they are a very real problem and threat to the modern search for lost history are
depicted as bloodthirsty evil individuals on a self serving mission for power and wealth. I think that
we as a society can agree that looting is wrong and that it is a selfish practice that diminishes the
knowledge and value of our history as a whole. But looters are not usually what they are made out to
be in the film. More often than not, looters are underprivileged people that loot to support their
family. Many times they are misguided and/or ignorant to their actions consequences. They are not
getting rich from their finds, and are not innit to get wealthy and power. It is a sad cycle in reality
that often starts with young children. Many times groups of children would loot during the day to
pass time or make some money, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the film the archaeologists seem to just be running rampant. Everything is very fast paced and
thrilling; they are constantly involved in chases and fights through the local towns. In reality this is
rare if not non–existent. Archaeologists are not only tasked with uncovering the past but additionally
must tread carefully around locals. They should disturb the community as little as possible and often
have positive interactions with them. A good example of this is how Dr. Morag helped to educate
children in the middle east about the consequences of looting ancient

As the betrayal began to increase, the more severe the punishments became. Jim Jones had very
little tolerance for disrespect, disobedience, negativity, and secrets. He was determined to keep
everyone under control. Once the cult was discovered at Jonestown, there was a tape that Jones
recorded during the time the People's Temple was going to commit suicide. "Jones himself can be
heard for the majority of the 45–minute recording as he is attempting to persuade the members into
committing suicide, and succeeding" (McCloy). This is a very disturbing tape where you can hear
Jim Jones speaking to the members in a persuasive way. However, there are also some people on the
tape who was against Jones for choosing their time of death. The majority

Jonestown Mass–Murder Suicide
"Prior to the 9/11 attack, the tragedy at Jonestown marked the single largest loss of U.S. civilian
lives in a non–natural disaster"(Jonestown Massacre 2). Jim Jones, a cult leader of the Peoples
Temple, was responsible for the loss of the 900+ people that died in Guyana on November 18, 1978.
Before all of this Jim Jones was a normal man living a life as a preacher who preached against
racism. Throughout his life he was very popular by "currying favor with public officials and the
media, donated money to numerous charitable causes and delivered votes for various politicians at
election times"(History Staff). Jim Jones was a cult leader that preached to 900+ people of the
Peoples Temple, made hundreds of people commit suicide, and made history of the biggest loss of
U.S. civilians before 9/11.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Throughout Jim Jones childhood and adulthood Jim Jones was a very religious person which
changed his experience towards many things in his lifetime. Jim Jones was born on May 13, 1931
and throughout his childhood "he was a strong student, especially in public speaking, but he had few
friends. His overpowering zest turned off some, and he, in turn, disliked many typical teenage boy
activities such as sports, and objected what he believed to be sinful behavior, such as dancing and
drinking" (Biography.com Editors). Ever since his childhood, his religious beliefs had taken over his

Bridget Jones Analysis
Bridget Jones chronicles a year of her life via diary entries in Helen Fielding's book, justly titled
Bridget Jones' Diary. The first–person narrative entitles readers to Bridget's inner workings. Buried
inside we find something much darker than her hapless–yet–cheery blonde exterior would suggest–
calorie–counting compulsions, daily weigh–ins, ruminations about her romance life, and much
more. Though blunt and revealing, Fielding's account of a 32–year–old singleton's life fails to
subvert the woes its readership, and very own protagonist, face. Small advances on the frontline of
feminism are made, but mostly, the message of the novel remains as unchanged as Bridget does
come the end of the year. The message is of feminine upkeep, romantic pursuit, and ultimately, self–
neglect. Bridget shows a contempt for mainstream beautification rituals, but ultimately, she submits
to them in the name of keeping up appearances. Prior to a date with her prized boss, Daniel, Bridget
takes extreme measures, presumably primping her body for hours: "I have nearly slipped a disc,
wheezing through a step aerobics class, scratched my naked body for seven minutes with a stiff
brush; cleaned the flat; filled the fridge, plucked my eyebrows, skimmed the papers and the Ultimate
Sex Guide, put the washing in and waxed my own legs..." (52). Her detailed account seethes with
annoyance, but Bridget nonetheless feels compelled to emulate what she sees in the pages of
Cosmopolitan. Briefly, Bridget does

After twelve years of wait, the third instalment of the "Bridget Jones" (2001 – 2004) film series has

When Working Title Films announced its intention of making another film back in 2009, several

"Ghostbusters: Answer the Call," was reportedly going to be the director of the film. However,
creative differences arise with Working Title and he exited the project. Production was slanted to

Jim Jones Religion Analysis
Ever since Jim Jones was a little boy he has always believed in god and it never stop when he grew
up to the point the he became a preacher for a church called people's temple. In the beginning
everything seems fine a great, Jones was a great preacher, the audience was good, it just seems like a
normal church the people will go to and believe that Jones had good intention of helping people to
believe in god and helping the poor but that slowly soon turn into something more sinister. The
people's temple moved to California than Jim Jones wanted to move but not only him he wanted
people's temple to move to someone where they can start fresh, talk about god and not get
discrimination wherever they go. 900 and maybe more people follow Jim Jones to Jonestown in
Guyana that is where they settled at and stay there for their rest of their life if only they knew what
was about to come. While the days pass by the more Jim Jones stated to lose himself he started to
think that he was god that the people with him was his children's than he started to take drugs and
change things for example he made everyone that came to Jonestown to give him their passbook
because no one could leave the area without his permission another example was back talking or

Compare And Contrast Jim Jones And Jesus Christ
Jim Jones and Jesus Christ, two names of two very known people, they share many similarities. Yet
only own of them is praised and the other is demonized. Even comparing the two is almost
forbidden, how could someone compare the savior of mankind and a man who is responsible for the
death of hundreds? Both managed to gain a large following, had people who feared them, and they
both made the ultimate sacrifice. While they share many similarities they both are remembered very
differently. Jesus is known as the savior of all and he is celebrated furiously, while Jim Jones is
demonized and only remembered for his cyanide kool–aid. They both went about their lives in
different ways, while Jesus was a peacemaker who helped others and sacrificed himself ... Show

At days end on November 18, 1976, Jonestown was left lifeless. Jones watched as all of his
followers (forced or under free will) drink the poisoned Kool–Aid as he commanded. Yet he did not
receive the same way out, he was too cowardly and proud to take his own life, Jones was killed by
one of his followers with a single gunshot to the back of the head (Jim Jones 2014). He died that day
with his followers, with no punishment. The families of members of the cult will never have closure,
no justice for those who had been killed. "The biggest misconception about Jonestown is that it was
a mass suicide, when in reality it was a mass murder," said a reporter that survived the shooting.
Reverend Jim Jones had no punishment, he instead had himself killed. One thousand members were
held imprisoned, 913 people killed, 270 of which are innocent children (Jim Jones Bio). Jim Jones
was never punished for his crime, not to say he did not deserve to die, but Jones was never caught.

Jim Jones reportedly used the classic cult–control tactic of sleep and food deprivation. He used a
combination of the two to psychologically break down his followers. New members would be
constantly surrounded by people who had already accepted Jim Jones as God. Constant contact with
these people would make resistance to Jim Jones futile because the sense of belonging would
overpower any common sense someone would have left. Jonestown is an excellent example of how
dangerous cults can be. With enough time, the fear of being rejected from the group or cult would
overpower the fear of death itself. Once those people feared something more than death, they would
be willing to lay down their lives for the cult (Harary, K). Jim Jones also used special forms of
psychological manipulation. He would force his followers to make false statements confessing to
crimes such as child molestation and terrorism (Harary, K). He would also have his followers tell
him their worst fears and then he would humiliate them during public gatherings. Finally, he would
actually make his followers thank and praise him even though he was barely feeding them and kept
them working the fields with very little rest (Dittmann,

The Jonestown Suicides : Jim Jones And The Jonestown Massacre
The events that occurred on November 18, 1978 has rocked the psychological world on how Jim
Jones was able to manage what is now known as the "Jonestown Suicides" or the "Jonestown
Massacre". It all started from when Jim Jones created what was known as the Peoples Temple in the
middle of Indianapolis in 1955 leading only just 20 followers at the time. After a year had past, the
people's temple started to make a name for itself by serving for the disadvantage and opening an
orphanage. This started to draw a crowd to the temple and it manage to start almost a new religion.
And when November 1978 arrived, Jim Jones managed to persuade 909 people to commit suicide
that were a part of the people's temple at the time. Method of control:
Jim Jones was able to control the 900 followers that he had by a couple of methods that include
using faith, money, discipline, sexuality and keeping everyone busy that they have no time to think.
Jim Jones was able to use faith to his advantage as he managed to get the followers to believe that he
has a great plan and that he is the next messiah and everyone believed everything he said. Money
was also another thing that let him get a grip on people because earlier on he said that everyone
should give up all their money and they will be very well looked after, but once everyone gave up
their money they could not leave because they could not afford to live on their own. Discipline and
sexuality were also used to control everyone by severely

The Consequences Of Julius Jones And The Jonestown Massacre
All across America, television sets display nine hundred and nine dead bodies. These bodies, in
aluminum coffins, came over to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Tax payers were irate at
possibly having to pay for all the embalming and burial costs ("The Horror," 28). Embalming and
burial costs are expensive and many people lost sympathy for cult members. So, people opposed
paying for the consequences of the Jonestown massacre.
Jim Jones realized he was losing control over the People's Temple, leading to the Jonestown
massacre. Then in 1975, he uprooted his followers and isolated them in Jonestown, Guyana. Jones
began instructing his followers to commit a revolutionary suicide (Twemlow 224). The People's
Temple's actions concerned many family members and outsiders, which sparked Congressman Leo
Ryan's involvement. Congressman Leo Ryan and some reporters were on a mission to rescue
Americans from Jonestown. On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones was paranoid that his reign over
Jonestown would come crashing down when some of his followers went with Congressman Ryan.
Jones used a mass suicide to remain in control. Many people of Jonestown drank the poisonous
Kool–Aid. When people resisted, Jones' loyal followers injected hesitant followers with the poison.
Jones ordered the murder of Congressman Ryan and was responsible for the deaths of nine hundred
and nine Americans. Jim Jones constructed the Jonestown massacre by advertising false promises,

California Jones appeared to be out primarily for his own
self interest not the church. Because of this Jones
shifts from an ethical prophet to an exemplary prophet.
After the subversive tactics of the Peoples Temple,
they started to feel the pressure from the society around
them. So again Jones moved the Church and anyone able to
the perfect utopian society, Guyana South America. Here
they named their society Jonestown. The Church made
everything they needed and were essentially isolated from
the rest of the world. In Guyana, Jim was becoming less

so everyone had somewhat of stock invested, making Jim
less important. When Jim saw his importance fading, he
faked numerous injuries to gain attention. Jim claimed to
have cancer although an autopsy showed no cancer was
present in his body. Even though Jones forbid the use of
drugs, he became dependent on barbiturates and
painkillers. His excuse was that he needed them for the
pain of his non–existent injuries. Then as quickly as it
grew it ended. The People Temple killed a congressman
coming to observe their life style. Knowing the
repercussions of this Jones organized a revolutionary
suicide that proved to everyone that they would not

This anger causes masked depression and keeps underlying bitterness from being exposed."(125) The counselor advise the counselee to confront his depression and say 'No' to others and beside God, put his family and himself first and get some leisure time rest. Kuyper argues, "that God's beneficence to the entire creation compels Christians to serve God in every facet of life." People become burnout when God is not sought first for his will purpose and plan. Monroe and colleague points out,"Life stress is associated with cognitive–affective symptons. In other words, Mr. Jones allowed people to make him think if he is not complying to their needs he is not doing the will of God; when in actuality he is only doing busy work if not lead by God. He was self–appointed pastor from a church in the Midwest. The People's Temple was founded in 1955 by Jim Jones, he created the church to create equality in races and help other people in need. Jones wanted to create a communist community where everyone was in accord and everyone worked together. When Jones moved his people to Guyana, South America, he managed to get exactly what he wanted. The people called this new community Jonestown, many people loved this town, while others began to question the environment they lived in. Jonestown was completely surrounded by jungles and armed guards that guarded the town. To leave Jonestown members are required to have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Representative named Leo Ryan decided to go to Jonestown to see how things were there. He brought a film crew with him and a few other people that wanted to see Jonestown as well. Everything seemed to be going well until a member of Jonestown gave Ryan a note telling him how bad they wanted to leave. It was then very obvious that the people were being held there against their will. The next day as Ryan and the other's that came with him began to board the plane to leave, they were attacked and killed by five people. Jones got very scared what would happen once The United States would do once they heard about the killing's. At this point Jones called for all of his people to come together and he said they were no longer safe. He began to explain to them that The United States would come to kill all of them and the only thing they could do to save them was to kill themselves. Jones demanded them to drink Kool–Aid mixed with Cyanide and Valium. That day, November 18, 1978, 912 people died from drinking the poisoned Kool–Aid, while 276 of them were children. The days leading up to the suicides are vastly important in Jones' twisted reasoning in the decision to make over 900 people commit suicide in the town pavilion. It started after reports of sexual, mental and physical abuse in Jonestown had been reported to the US government. After hearing this news Congressman Leo Ryan was flown into Guyana on November 14th with 31 others including news reporters, photographers and worried relatives of The People's Temple members. Entry into Jonestown was denied for three days before the group was welcomed into the town with dinner and entertainment for the night on November 17th 1978. Throughout the night members of the group were handed notes from Jonestown citizens asking for help defecting from the cult. The next day the visitors began to leave Jonestown with the defecting members of the cult, this sent Jones into a panic, he believed that the end was near for himself and The Peoples Temple. Jones sent gunmen to kill the congressman and other visitors before they could leave, only a handful of 5 people were shot and killed, including Leo Ryan. Jones then called for a White Night; getting nurses to create a concoction of Kool–Aid/Flavour Aid and Cyanide; an extremely poisonous compound Jones had stockpiled in his time as a ... • 9. Jim Jones Essay The mass suicides, that took place under the influence of Reverend Jim Jones, can be explained from a sociological perspective. By looking at how the group dynamics played into the outcome one gets a better idea of the whys? of the massacre. The sociological explanation is but one way to explain this horrific event. It is , however, the only one explored in this essay for reasons of concision. At one level, the deaths at Jonestown can be viewed as the product of obedience, of people complying with the orders of a leader and reacting to the threat of force. In the Peoples Temple, whatever Jim Jones commanded, the members did. When he gathered the community at the pavilion and the poison was brought out, the populace was surrounded ... Once a state of dependency is firmly established, the group's control over members' thoughts, feelings, and behavior is strengthened by the members' growing dread of losing the group's psychological support (physical threat also occurs in some groups), however much it may aim at ensuring their compliance with leadership's often debilitating demands. Yes. Ordinary social conditioning differs from mind control in two important ways. First, parents, schools, churches, and other organizations do not as a rule utilize unethically manipulative techniques in socializing children, adolescents, and young adults. Second, social conditioning is a slow process which promotes and encourages an initially "unformed" child to become an autonomous adult with a unique identity. Mind control, on the other hand, uses unethically manipulative techniques of persuasion and control to induce dependency in a person with an established identity, which the manipulator seeks to alter radically without the informed consent of his targets.   	Cult leaders and members use mind control to inundate their message into the minds of prospective and existing followers.Groups that demonstrate exaggerated devotion or commitment to some person, idea, ... • 15. Was Jim Jones Good Or Bad Jim Jones did a lot that seemed good in his life (Merlot). He worked with people of all different backgrounds to make their lives better and wanted to solve social problems. He spoke against the racist stereotype of the white man and towards the new idea of a united racial group. Jones also did a lot of bad in his life. Jim Jones was the craziest religious fanatic to live during the 20th century because he brainwashed most of his followers, abused his power, and led the largest mass murder for that decade in a single event. Jones was born to a poor family in 1931 in Crete, Indiana. His father was an alcoholic who had trouble keeping a job and a racist who associated with the KKK. Jim Jones' cruelty was seen in his childhood (McCormick Maaga). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jim Jones would even fake heart attacks or act like he was getting shot during the White Night events to see who would try to help him, and who would run. Deborah Layton Blakey lived in Jonestown for a few months before leaving in the spring of 1978. After Blakey escaped she attempted to get government officials involved in the problems going on in Jonestown, with little success. Blakey described the suicide plans in an interview "We were informed that our situation had become hopeless and that the only course of action open to us was a mass–suicide for the glory of socialism. We were told that we would be tortured by mercenaries – were we taken alive. Everyone, including the children was told to line up. As we passed through the lines, we were given a small glass of red liquid to drink. We were told that the liquid contained poison and that we would die within 45 minutes. We all did as we were told." (Ulman & Abse 1983, 653). Some might argue Jim Jones did more good than bad. (thefamouspeople.com) He helped communities and helped people feel accepted and loved and not judged during these hard times. This role was one of his most memorable ones for him and many others who have knowledge of it. He went on to play Ajax many more times in Othello (Cutruzzula). He told a story of when he had his first stage injury. While he was playing Ajax, one of the other main characters had a pole which was to be used in the scene (Cutruzzula). The actor missed his cue and accidentally jammed the pole right into Jones' foot (Cutruzzula). He then fell and his big toe skidded across the stage, which hurt even more. Jones then had to be carried off of the stage (Cutruzzula). This was one of his first mistakes in a play and it has shaped him since then to be a good actor even in a time of shock (Cutruzzula). • 21. Jim Jones Cult Theory Sociologists view cult behavior as a deviance from society's norm. There are many theories as to why a cult leader forms a cult and how they garner such complete blind devotion from their members. While researching Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple I discovered that this particular cult adhered to several of the proven theories. Jones had few societal bonds and used fear and intimidation to control his members. He was an extreme socialist turned communist; when his original goals were met with resistance, he chose the path of rebellion, which was to reject society's goals and seek to provide his own goals and means to accomplish them (Henslin, 2015). Jim Jones was born in a small town in Indiana. His father was a disabled WWI veteran who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Land was purchased in Guyana and The Peoples Temple relocated with the intention of forming a utopian commune, more than 1,000 members followed Jones to Guyana (Rosenburg, 2016). Unfortunately, there was nothing utopian about Jonestown. The commune was run like a prison camp and Jones was in complete control of all members; no one could leave, phone calls to the States were scripted, letters in and out were censored, and armed guards stood at the perimeters (pbs.org). Since communications were severely restricted, Jones began preaching fear to maintain his control; the Ku Klux clan was taking over American cities, nuclear war was on the horizon, and concentration camps were being built to house blacks and political activists (pbs.org). He would preach constantly over the loudspeaker, sometimes all night long, and initiated suicide drills, which he termed "revolutionary suicide." These so called, "white nights", where he would give the members a cup of red liquid that they were told held poison, which they were then ordered to drink. Later, they were told it was not poisoned and they had passed the loyalty test (Biography.com, 2014). Jones told his members that, "their deaths would be honored by the world as a symbolic protest against the evils of mankind." He would further tell them that the faithful would then be transformed and go to live with him on another planet (Harary, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Jim Jones And The Jonestown Massacre Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre November 18, 1978, altered America, but the process leading up to that day began much earlier by a mind only described as perverse. The Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ, Peoples Temple as it is commonly referred, led by James Warren Jones blazed its own way into the history books with what is still one of the most disastrous endings of a movement. Jim Jones is known for founding the most infamous cult in American history; his reputation revolves around the manipulation of a population, professing skewed values, controlling that population, and eventually destroying what he created in a final act of domination. As he grew up he began finding his interest in religion as he attended churches around town, eventually obtaining a friendship with a minister at the Pentecostal church (Biography.com Editors, 2014). This friendship truly marked the beginning of Jones' religious fanaticism as it led to him preaching to/at his community and friends, even though he only could hold a few. His devout nature drove away many, but it was his view on other's behaviors that really caused his lack of friendships. He regarded many behaviors to be sinful or wrong, which caused an anger towards the boys who portrayed them if not a hostility. In her research paper, Antoinette Pick–Jones (2007) provides the example "'...Jim was so upset with one of his friends for going home rather than going out and witnessing, that he 'grabbed his father's gun and shot at the boys..."' which shows just how far Jones would go if he felt like someone was acting in a sinful manner. In terms of education Jones had a successful one that eventually led to him continuing onto undergraduate work at Butler University and graduate studies at Indiana University. Right out of high school he married a young woman, Marceline Baldwin, who was a nursing student that also had a passion for Christianity that fit with his (Peterson, 2005). • 25. Mass Suicide by Jim Jones' Cult Jim Jones was the founder of the Peoples Temple; a cult best recognized for the mass murder/suicide of over 900 people. Before the events that made him a part of history, he was seen as a man with great charisma and visionary ideas; now he is viewed as a manipulator, abuser, and murderer. This paper will explore the life of Jim Jones and with the use of psychological models, try identifying abnormal behavior patterns. Jones grew up in Indiana with his mother and disabled, alcoholic father in a small shack with no plumbing. His parents held very opposite views of race that would come to influence Jones later in life. His father was said to be associated with the Ku Klux Klan, while his mother was in support forward progress politics; Jones would come to side with the latter. As a child, Jones studied Joseph Stalin, Karl Marx, Mahatma Gandhi, and Adolf Hitler (Reiterman, 1982). He would pick out the strength of each person and this is where he gained his knowledge that led him to be in support of socialism. Jones was obsessed with religion as a child and would often perform funerals for deceased animals; one of these animals came from when he stabbed a cat to death. Jones showed many signs of intelligence; one being when he graduated from high school early with honors (Jones, 2002). Jim Jones saw the application of the religion to spread his ideas; socialistic ideas to be precise. He became a student preacher at a church but soon quit because the leaders of the ... His evaluation of Jim Jones is interesting due to the fact that he had all these reasons to not follow him but since no one else said anything, Odell wasn't able to stand up for what he believed in much like many of the other survivors. The group mindset had worn off and Odell started to list all of the things he was against that Jim Jones did, such as Denigrated sex, but he slept with women constantly, beat homosexuals in front of everyone and still had sex with men, he believed in equality yet he ate meat while everyone else ate rice with maggots, and then finally Jim Jones also preached racial equality due to his ... • 29. Jim Jones And Charles Manson Persuasion Cults Two of America's most famous cult leaders are Jim Jones and Charles Manson, they are powerful leaders that drove their followers to commit insanely violent, and crazy acts. Today, many people wonder what gave those men such power to influence their followers to commit crimes. Jim Jones, for example, was a visionary and he used religion to influence his followers to join his "community". Jones persuasion was highly successful among the homeless, dispossessed, lonely, and lower–middle–class. These individuals were drawn in large numbers to the Peoples Temple. Using reams of personal documents and types of propaganda to recruit more people to Jonestown. Jonestown gave them fellowship, a dream of social justice, social services clinics for free health care, drug rehabs, legal aid, and a sense of purpose. Jones followers gave him all their worldly possessions, money, and all the power he needed even though he was just as average as his followers. Jones didn't start out as this powerful leader he came to be , he was born into a bitterly unhappy home in Crete, Indiana. "Jones himself was also a drug addict, a sexual predator among both sexes, and somehow he accomplished to fake to a large amount of people that he was against everything that he was still doing in secret" (George Russell). Jim eventually found his place as a member of a small Christian church in his home town. Jones said he joined the religion because he never felt accepted, and he was drawn to fellow outcasts. He soon acquired a gift for charismatic preaching and took it to neighborhoods that were populated primarily by African American in the 1950s. It was in these neighborhoods where he preached racial inclusion and gathered a mixed–race congregation. This did not sit well with many people in this era before the civil rights movement, and it added to his progressive reputation. He became head of the Indianapolis Human Rights Commission, which is a large reason he would recruit different ethnicities to join his temple. Jones also in order to get more members used informers in his audiences to get information out of the unsuspecting faithful that he could reveal as evidence of clairvoyant powers, and he hired fake invalids who would rise from ... • 31. The Case Of Jim Jones And The Peoples Temple The question of what defines leadership has been researched, written about, and debated throughout history. In the simplest terms, it can probably be agreed upon that a leader is someone who has people that follow them. Some leaders are able to make a deep emotional connection with their followers. As history has proven, leaders can use this connection for various reasons, and sometimes the leader's agenda is not in the best interest of the followers. In the case of Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple, the power and influence certain leaders are able to achieve is illustrated through Jones' ability to influence, manipulate, and ultimately be responsible for the death of his followers. This case study introduces the reader to Jim Jones and his cult, the Peoples Temple. The organization is described as a communal society, where "everyone would be treated equally and share in the common good" (as cited by Ciulla, 2003, p. 193). Jones is described as a selfless leader, who opened his group to society's outsiders. He was not interested in wealth, even though the group accumulated a large sum of money, and is described as wearing borrowed suits and working over 20 hours daily. He was deeply devoted to his congregation and his idea of creating an "interracial socialist community" (as cited by Ciulla, 2003, p. 194). As the congregation grew, however, Jones began to grow his own legend. He made outlandish statements about being God incarnate, and his followers grew more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Guyana Tragedy: The Story Of Jim Jones Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones is a docu–drama that outlines the life of Jim Jones, and how his work ended in a mass murder–suicide at Jonestown, Guyana on November of 1978. The events that inspired the film has raised issues regarding the formation of cults, free will, and leaders' rise of power. Jim Jones was always obsessed with religion when he was young. For instance, he led a mock mass session where he stood in front of 4 or so dogs and gave "orders" to them. Mixed in with that was the fact that his parents argued a lot. His father, in particular, was racist and against young Jones's religious leanings. He left the family shortly afterward. This is a dangerously gradual process. The rationale is that gaining trust and power over the people requires someone to do good monumental things initially. As they gain respect, they gain power. People will be willing to follow they footsteps and make tremendous sacrifices. That way, they can control them to do what they want to do, such as coercing them to do something preposterous or against their own will. This can be related to sexual assault, which is any sexual contact without verbal/physical consent. And most of it is related to alcohol, where victims are too intoxicated to give explicit consent. The reason alcohol is involved because it is difficult to sleep with someone while they are sober. This whole process is similar to the gain in power and control. Most people are reluctant to the whims and will of a leader, so they must slowly get into peoples' lives and then control them with an iron first. For communist countries around the world, leaders are normally disappointed with capitalism and exploitation of the poor. They promised of a utopia where there are no class restrictions and equality, but after they gained power, the opposite happens. Anyone who opposes the leader/cult is killed. Stalin's secret police killed numerous of Stalin's enemies. The Tiananmen Square Event in 1989 reflects the cult's will over the people, where the military gunned down protestors. • 35. Jim Jones And The Jonestown Massacre On November 18th, 1978 what would become known as one of the most detrimental days for many families occurred. Formally known as The People's Temple Agricultural Project or in short The People's Temple, a substantial amount of citizens, most if not all of them being American were led by Jim Jones in a term coined by Jones himself, "Revolutionary Suicide". Nine hundred and nine lives were taken on that devastating day (McGehee). Jones used powerful methods of persuasion to gather nearly one thousand members of the People's Temple to migrate to Guyana in South America to form the settlement known as Jonestown. It is believed that Jim Jones chose the secluded location of Guyana for the purpose of containing the citizens so they could not flee their new formed society. Jones was for many of the members of Jonestown a father figure as most of the children on the settlement called Jones father. The message behind Jones' society was acceptance, equality, and a sense of belonging in the world. The mass suicide that occurred on November 18th, 1978 will later be known as The Jonestown Massacre. Jim Jones founded the People's Temple in the 1950's. Jones feared a nuclear Holocaust and persuaded his congregation to relocate to California. Although his first congregation was a mainstream church, Jones did not believe in God (Pick–Jones). The use of churches in Jones mission was just to help his cult grow. Rhetorical Analysis Of Jim Jones 'Death Tape' Rhetorical Analysis: Jim Jones "Death Tape" One of the most significant artifacts from The Peoples Temple is known as the "Death Tape" because it is the last audio recording of Jim Jones, which was recovered after the mass suicide of he and his followers. That day Jim Jones effectively persuaded more than 900 of his followers to commit mass suicide by reestablishing his strong credibility, using persuasive tactics of love and fear, and by convincing them that suicide is the rational way and the only way. As Jones talks about the act of suicide he talks about it as if it were another friend sitting next to you in church. Jones proclaims, "It is not to be feared. Jones made suicide appear to be positive solution for his followers; he downplayed the act of suicide into the relaxed words of "Lets get gone". By doing so he played into his followers emotions, making suicide appear to be the best solution. Jones isolated his followers and made the Peoples Temple their only connection and family. Jones made the idea of separation from the family not an option he was willing to accept; "We can't separate ourselves from our own people. People twenty years laying in some old rotten nursing home." Jones made the decision of suicide as the answer for himself and his followers. Jones then made suicide appear to be the only option because separation from the family is not an option he accepted. Ryan was there to investigate complaints about the community called "Jonestown," which was largely inhabited by his former California constituents. One of Jones' long time followers Tim Stoen explained, "There wasn't anything magical about Jim's power. It was raw politics. He was able to deliver what politicians want, which is power. And how do you get power? By votes. And how do you get votes? With people. Jim Jones could produce 3,000 people at a political event.'' Agar Jaicks, Chairman of the county Democratic Central Committee seemed to agree with Stoen's assessment when he said, "What you had here was a ready–made volunteer workforce&he was very strong&here was a guy who could provide workers for causes.'' Jones first step on his path to political influence began in the Fall of 1970. He created a fund for the families of slain police officers. This was the beginning of a viable process he used to make valuable friends through charitable contributions. The first bad press Jones received in the Bay area was a somewhat critical story run by the San Francisco Examiner in 1972. The paper exposed that Jones had claimed to be a "prophet" and said he could raise the dead. Perhaps to preempt any further embarrassment Jones subsequently gave out grants to 12 newspapers. Not to diminish the excitement of archeology, but the portrayal of archeology in movies is extremely exaggerated and far from accurate. In Indiana Jones Indy is often plagued by so many forces that try to set him back from his archaeological goals. He faces looters, booby traps, destructive weather, etc... Looters, while they are a very real problem and threat to the modern search for lost history are depicted as bloodthirsty evil individuals on a self serving mission for power and wealth. I think that we as a society can agree that looting is wrong and that it is a selfish practice that diminishes the knowledge and value of our history as a whole. But looters are not usually what they are made out to be in the film. More often than not, looters are underprivileged people that loot to support their family. Many times they are misguided and/or ignorant to their actions consequences. They are not getting rich from their finds, and are not innit to get wealthy and power. The first–person narrative entitles readers to Bridget's inner workings. Buried inside we find something much darker than her hapless–yet–cheery blonde exterior would suggest– calorie–counting compulsions, daily weigh–ins, ruminations about her romance life, and much more. Though blunt and revealing, Fielding's account of a 32–year–old singleton's life fails to subvert the woes its readership, and very own protagonist, face. Jones watched as all of his followers (forced or under free will) drink the poisoned Kool–Aid as he commanded. Yet he did not receive the same way out, he was too cowardly and proud to take his own life, Jones was killed by one of his followers with a single gunshot to the back of the head (Jim Jones 2014). He died that day with his followers, with no punishment. The families of members of the cult will never have closure, no justice for those who had been killed. "The biggest misconception about Jonestown is that it was a mass suicide, when in reality it was a mass murder," said a reporter that survived the shooting. Reverend Jim Jones had no punishment, he instead had himself killed. One thousand members were held imprisoned, 913 people killed, 270 of which are innocent children (Jim Jones Bio). Jim Jones was never punished for his crime, not to say he did not deserve to die, but Jones was never caught. With only a gunshot wound to the head, Jones died with his followers that day because it was his choice to die( Jonestown: Nightmare in Paradise). • 64. Jim Jones Research Paper Jim Jones started as a reverend who started his own racially–mixed church whose main goal was to eradicate racism. This church became known as the people's temple and was well known throughout Indianapolis for their work. The People's Temple opened an orphanage and soup kitchen; they also provided assistance to disabled people in the area. In addition to his church's good work, Jim Jones and his wife became the first couple in Indiana to adopt a black child (Wunrow, Rose). Everything seemed to be going well for the People's Temple and Jim Jones; however, this seemingly wholesome church would eventually lead to as assassinated congressman and one of the largest mass suicide events in history. He used a combination of the two to psychologically break down his followers. New members would be constantly surrounded by people who had already accepted Jim Jones as God. Constant contact with these people would make resistance to Jim Jones futile because the sense of belonging would overpower any common sense someone would have left. Jonestown is an excellent example of how dangerous cults can be. With enough time, the fear of being rejected from the group or cult would overpower the fear of death itself. Once those people feared something more than death, they would be willing to lay down their lives for the cult (Harary, K). Jim Jones also used special forms of psychological manipulation. He would force his followers to make false statements confessing to crimes such as child molestation and terrorism (Harary, K). He would also have his followers tell him their worst fears and then he would humiliate them during public gatherings. Finally, he would actually make his followers thank and praise him even though he was barely feeding them and kept them working the fields with very little rest (Dittmann, ... • 66. Jim Jones Research Paper On November 18, 1978, with the help of grape flavored Flavor–Aid, over 900 members of "The people's temple" were killed in a mass suicide directed by leader Jim Jones. In the beginning Jones movement was one that helped the poor and needy but with a growing number of members, unflattering reports surfaced. With former members telling stories of having all belongings, homes, and even children being taken from them Jones was forced to move his congregation to Guyana where he promised to build a socialist utopia. However, Jones created a socialist government far from utopia. Members worked long hours, had phone calls or any communication censored, and harsh punishment was given to anyone who questioned Jones. • 68. The Influence Of Mr. Jones On Hitler Mr. Jones wasn't happy with what he had done most likely because it went a little too far and it might have made students feel bad afterwards. This was because The Wave was so much similar to Nazis. He wanted to use The Wave as a lesson because a student had asked, "Why didn't someone try and stop Hitler, because it was obvious he was murdering the Jews?" Mr. Jones used the same technique to trick the students into thinking they were apart of something big. The students liked The Wave a lot because they thought that they belonged to something important. They believed that Mr. Jones was a strong leader so they were willing to be taken under his control. The students were more easier to trick into this because it was in 1967, and during this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Jonestown Suicides : Jim Jones And The Jonestown Massacre The events that occurred on November 18, 1978 has rocked the psychological world on how Jim Jones was able to manage what is now known as the "Jonestown Suicides" or the "Jonestown Massacre". It all started from when Jim Jones created what was known as the Peoples Temple in the middle of Indianapolis in 1955 leading only just 20 followers at the time. After a year had past, the people's temple started to make a name for itself by serving for the disadvantage and opening an orphanage. This started to draw a crowd to the temple and it manage to start almost a new religion. And when November 1978 arrived, Jim Jones managed to persuade 909 people to commit suicide that were a part of the people's temple at the time. Method of control: Jim Jones was able to control the 900 followers that he had by a couple of methods that include using faith, money, discipline, sexuality and keeping everyone busy that they have no time to think. Jim Jones was able to use faith to his advantage as he managed to get the followers to believe that he has a great plan and that he is the next messiah and everyone believed everything he said. Money was also another thing that let him get a grip on people because earlier on he said that everyone should give up all their money and they will be very well looked after, but once everyone gave up their money they could not leave because they could not afford to live on their own. Discipline and sexuality were also used to control everyone by severely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. The Consequences Of Julius Jones And The Jonestown Massacre All across America, television sets display nine hundred and nine dead bodies. These bodies, in aluminum coffins, came over to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Tax payers were irate at possibly having to pay for all the embalming and burial costs ("The Horror," 28). Embalming and burial costs are expensive and many people lost sympathy for cult members. So, people opposed paying for the consequences of the Jonestown massacre. Jim Jones realized he was losing control over the People's Temple, leading to the Jonestown massacre. Then in 1975, he uprooted his followers and isolated them in Jonestown, Guyana. Jones began instructing his followers to commit a revolutionary suicide (Twemlow 224). The People's Temple's actions concerned many family members and outsiders, which sparked Congressman Leo Ryan's involvement. Congressman Leo Ryan and some reporters were on a mission to rescue Americans from Jonestown. On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones was paranoid that his reign over Jonestown would come crashing down when some of his followers went with Congressman Ryan. Jones used a mass suicide to remain in control. Many people of Jonestown drank the poisonous Kool–Aid. When people resisted, Jones' loyal followers injected hesitant followers with the poison. Due to marital issues they have been experiencing, as a couple for the past two months they have been seeing a social worker. They have been married for 30 years and as a result have had three children, Mary, Silas, and their youngest Paul. Due to their own as well as their church's very conservative views, they did not support divorce, which ultimately led them to seek outside help. • 77. After the subversive tactics of the Peoples Temple, they started to feel the pressure from the society around them. So again Jones moved the Church and anyone able to the perfect utopian society, Guyana South America. Here they named their society Jonestown. The Church made everything they needed and were essentially isolated from the rest of the world. In Guyana, Jim was becoming less and less important every day. Everyone built the society so everyone had somewhat of stock invested, making Jim less important. When Jim saw his importance fading, he faked numerous injuries to gain attention. Jim claimed to have cancer although an autopsy showed no cancer was present in his body. Even though Jones forbid the use of drugs, he became dependent on barbiturates and painkillers. His excuse was that he needed them for the pain of his non–existent injuries. Then as quickly as it grew it ended. The People Temple killed a congressman coming to observe their life style. Knowing the repercussions of this Jones organized a revolutionary suicide that proved to everyone that they would not loose.
