James Jarrett grew up on a farm in Florida but wanted more opportunities, so he worked hard in school. He went to college in Massachusetts where he studied economics and was exposed to diverse ideas. This led him to study development in Uganda and later the UK, where he met his partner. He has now lived and worked in the UK for over 15 years as a health economist but struggled with visa requirements until recently obtaining indefinite leave to remain.

Coming to The US
In 2010, after I had just finished high school in Al hafuf in Eastern Saudi Arabia, I tried to look for a good university near my family. I wanted to stay nearby so I could be with my family and friends all the time, but I didnโt find one that I wanted. The universities in Saudi Arabia were not what I was looking for, which was a good education system with strong major options, and school activities. In edition, because my father had studied in the USA, he advised me to go and study in the US. This is the most exiting and good time in my life. Also it has changed me a lot since I moved here.
At that time, I started to look for school and a good city in the United State. And I was really nerves because all what I knew about the USA was from the TV. I also had never left Saudi Arabia without my family before. I sent my paper to three schools in a deferent part in the US. I was finally accepted in Wichita State University here in Wichita. I started packing my stuff and buy things that I will need here. Ten days before my flight, when I woke up that day, there was smell of my favorite dish that my mom made it for me. I was so happy and also sad because I will miss my mom so much.
As for when I got to the US, because I had to go to Washington DC to do my scholarship paper, I was really amazed of the views and the big buildings. Moreover, the people are always busy and the city doesnโt go to sleep at all. I thought that all America just as Washington DC. I started to make some friend because many Americans are curious to know about my country and my culture. But than I had to leave them and move to Wichita to start going to school
In order to take classes at WSU, I needed to learn English, so I started my WSU experience at the intensive English. The first day when I attended intensive English classes, I saw people from all over the world. It was really fun experience to have friends from a different country and learn about many parts of the world such as foods holydays, and games. I started to learn English and about American culture. At first, my English wasnโt good, but my English got better step by step. I also changed a lot of my bad habit and bet better person.
What I have changed on my life style, first, in Saudi Arabia, I had never exercised and we had never play sports, but here I start to go to the gym and do some sports. I did things that I had never done before such as camping, fishing, and some hikes. Now Iโm likely opened minded and out going. I also have a lot friend males and females from all over the world. I feel happy, confidence, and proud of myself.

Case Study Ben Hammond
Ben Hammond grew up in Milton Keynes, England and enjoyed playing sports and cycling as a child. He moved to a small town near Bath at age 13. As a student, he became interested in helping people around the world who faced difficult circumstances. He studied development studies and volunteered for a year in Thailand, teaching English to Burmese refugees fleeing violence and oppression in Myanmar. Living in the refugee camp was a difficult experience as resources were scarce, but it was also rewarding as he helped the refugees and learned about their plight. The experience had a profound impact on him and shaped his career as a teacher to educate others about the situation in Myanmar.

- 2. The Case of James Jarrett I grew up on a farm in Florida, in the southern United States. There I had loads of family close by - about eighty members of my extended family lived within a mile of the farm! It was good, I had instant friends in all my cousins, and things were secure, my family were always there to support each other. We werenโt rich but everyone looked after everyone Life in the U.S. Photos here
- 3. The Case of James Jarrett I went to a school twenty miles away, in the same town as my parentโs business, so Iโd be given a lift by them every day until I could drive myself. School was a bit like school for everyone - some good bits and some bad. Life in the U.S. I lived in a poor area - people donโt really know whatโs out there outside of their community, and it meant that very few people ever left. I was different, I did want to leave - there werenโt the opportunities for me in my home area.
- 5. The Case of The Reaction The course I was on was really international - people came from all over the world, so being a โforeignerโ wasnโt unique to me. We were all in the same boat. Being American had no real consequenceโฆ other than me being able to discuss world politics - something everyone wanted to talk about, especially after 9/11.
- 9. The Case of The Resolution? When Iโve got the money I will probably get dual citizenship (Iโve already qualified for this because Iโve been working here for more than five years in a row). I want to do this because Iโve made both my professional and my personal life here. I like it here, and itโs become home. In October 2009 I took the โLife in the UKโ test as part of my application. I was asked a range of questions, from employment law to history - Iโm not even sure many of my British friends would have passed! I did pass, and ยฃ860 later I secured an โindefinite leave to remainโ visa.
