The producer for Titanium was
David Guetta and the lyrics was
written by him to but the music was
performed by Sia.
Titanium is about the strength in
one individual. This Is shown
through the boy.
The boy has supernatural powers in him that
makes him different from the rest.
‘Shoot me down, but I wont fall, I am titanium’ – This suggests
that he will not give up but fight back and stay strong. The word
‘titanium’ is also metaphorical as titanium is a metal and very
hard. Similarly the boys mental state is strong.
Young boy is used in this video as children
are vulnerable and are prone to bullying
and oppression
‘ Raise your voice’ This is raising awareness to
people who are bullied / oppressed to speak
for your rights and stand up for yourself.
Similarly to how the boy does.
Mise en scene:
Location: School/ House and the jungle. – jungle is a way of escape can emphasise the fact that the boy is grown up and he is
independent.
Lighting: The lighting in the school is high key in order to show the destruction more clearly. The jungle the lighting is low key.
Props: guns are symbolic - they ‘fire’ similarly the society fire ‘words’ which are hurtful . These words will affect a child’s
psychological state.
Costume: The boy wears casual clothes – jeans./ coat and a hat – the weather seems windy and cold so the boy is dressed
appropriate to the weather.
Target Audience?
The target audience are people who like listening to pop music. Teenagers/ Young adults. The music has fast pace beat
which catches young peoples attention to listen to the music as its fresh and new.
This music video is narrative based as its simply about telling a story. Therefore there is no lip syncing and cannot see the
artist performing the song.
The editing would fit in with the rhythm of the song.
There is no dance in the music video even though the
music is upbeat and is at a fast pace.
The part where the boy was riding his bicycle very fast
and tries to run away – the music at that point is very
fast. – This connotes his anxiety of the situation – he is
also scared.
The shot when the boy is walking slowly in the school
corridors the music is slow. Slow motion builds up
tension and suspense.
Therefore this is to ensure that this narrative video fits
in with the music.
Unusual for David Guetta
as he normally makes up
beat music with ‘ Hot girls’
The police are stereotyped as being strong and are guards of
the society. They support the good and fight evil.
However in this case its almost like they are fighting with the
vulnerable. From this it also connotes that they are powerless.
Its almost like the boy is taking up
the role of a superman with his
powers.
The idea I would subvert in my music video:
1) To have a narrative based music video throughout as it
conveys a message to the audience. It helps to apply on the
everyday lives of people.
2) I liked the idea of editing with the pace of music so for e.g.
when the music is slow – (slow motion).
1) Shot 1: The music video starts of with an extreme close up shot of the boys hands on his head. While the boy takes of his hand from his head
slowly, the camera moves backwards at the same rate. The camera then cuts away and shows how the boy is on the floor while the camera
moves slowly to the right. We could see so many papers scattered on the floor.
2) Shot 2: Extreme close up of the boys knees while his on his knees on the floor. This connotes that he is devastated. People usually collapse
when they are in a dilemma.
3) Shot 3: The boy in the centre of a school hallway. (Long Shot) Everything is destroyed around him. He is the only one there so we assume
that he might be the one who done it. But at this point it seems pretty unusual as we do not know anything about the boy.
4) Shot 4: The boy is the centre of attention as the camera is primarily focused on him. The camera then moves backwards to show all the
damage that is caused. At this point we may believe that the boy has supernatural powers. Then there is a medium close up of the boy looking
around.
5) Shot 5: You can see the boy walking through the door passing a room where the teacher is trying to call someone. Maybe police? while she
has the telephone near her ears. The expression on the teachers face is negative. She quickly shuts the door. You can clearly see that she is
terrified.
6) Shot 6: The boy then puts on a hat. The hat is symbolic as it suggests that he is trying to cover himself and he wears the hat so people cannot
recognize him. He tries to hide his identity. He acts normal when the police car arrives. He then starts walking fast.
7) Shot 7: The boy is riding his bicycle very fast. The camera moves forward swiftly. (Wide shot) from behind. This can suggest that he is being
chased. Our suspicion of the boy having supernatural powers is assured at this point. Additionally, the shots are taken from different angles
while he is riding his bicycle. --- wide shot of his house. He then opens the door comes in (Extreme close up shot) of his hand closing the
door.
8) Shot 8: The boy turns back to look at the TV as its on. It states ‘ Supernatural occurrence at local school’. We as audience are curious to know
why he is doing this. Maybe this is because he is getting bullied. So now he is causing destruction to seek revenge as he is frustrated.
9) Shot 9: Mid shot of the room, (It looks dull and cold) - The House is empty – no one at home can suggest that he has no family and friends.
The boy throws his teddy bear and clothes at the back. This can suggest that he is throwing his childhood. Maybe because he gets bullied. He
hates his childhood – This is the point where we see a transaction of the nature in this music video. We take the boy much more seriously than
before. He acts like a adult.
10) The boy tries escaping from the back door. You can see (close up) of the keys on the table. The boy stretches his hand (Mid shot). At this point
the audience get to see his superpowers visually, as the boy lifts the keys from the table and attracts the key like a magnetic force and clenches his
fist. - The police then break in from the front door.
11) When the police officer walks in the door. The camera is tilted upwards. The teddy bear is rotating in the mid air. The prop connotes that the
boy has more power over the police.
12) Wide shot of boy in the jungle running away – he gets caught by the police and the headlights on the cars are also focused on him. The boy is
surrounded by the police force with guns. This has a hidden message as it shows the view of other people i.e. society. They view the boy as
very different and could not accept him. That’s why he is ‘bullied’ and ‘chased’.
13) Long shot of the boy. He is curled up on the floor and does not fight them. Instead he uses power again to push everyone. The light is low key
as it is in the jungle. However when he uses power he gives out a bright light. – camera fades to a bright white background.

Case study 3 final version

  • 1. The producer for Titanium was David Guetta and the lyrics was written by him to but the music was performed by Sia. Titanium is about the strength in one individual. This Is shown through the boy. The boy has supernatural powers in him that makes him different from the rest. ‘Shoot me down, but I wont fall, I am titanium’ – This suggests that he will not give up but fight back and stay strong. The word ‘titanium’ is also metaphorical as titanium is a metal and very hard. Similarly the boys mental state is strong. Young boy is used in this video as children are vulnerable and are prone to bullying and oppression ‘ Raise your voice’ This is raising awareness to people who are bullied / oppressed to speak for your rights and stand up for yourself. Similarly to how the boy does. Mise en scene: Location: School/ House and the jungle. – jungle is a way of escape can emphasise the fact that the boy is grown up and he is independent. Lighting: The lighting in the school is high key in order to show the destruction more clearly. The jungle the lighting is low key. Props: guns are symbolic - they ‘fire’ similarly the society fire ‘words’ which are hurtful . These words will affect a child’s psychological state. Costume: The boy wears casual clothes – jeans./ coat and a hat – the weather seems windy and cold so the boy is dressed appropriate to the weather. Target Audience? The target audience are people who like listening to pop music. Teenagers/ Young adults. The music has fast pace beat which catches young peoples attention to listen to the music as its fresh and new. This music video is narrative based as its simply about telling a story. Therefore there is no lip syncing and cannot see the artist performing the song.
  • 2. The editing would fit in with the rhythm of the song. There is no dance in the music video even though the music is upbeat and is at a fast pace. The part where the boy was riding his bicycle very fast and tries to run away – the music at that point is very fast. – This connotes his anxiety of the situation – he is also scared. The shot when the boy is walking slowly in the school corridors the music is slow. Slow motion builds up tension and suspense. Therefore this is to ensure that this narrative video fits in with the music. Unusual for David Guetta as he normally makes up beat music with ‘ Hot girls’ The police are stereotyped as being strong and are guards of the society. They support the good and fight evil. However in this case its almost like they are fighting with the vulnerable. From this it also connotes that they are powerless. Its almost like the boy is taking up the role of a superman with his powers. The idea I would subvert in my music video: 1) To have a narrative based music video throughout as it conveys a message to the audience. It helps to apply on the everyday lives of people. 2) I liked the idea of editing with the pace of music so for e.g. when the music is slow – (slow motion).
  • 3. 1) Shot 1: The music video starts of with an extreme close up shot of the boys hands on his head. While the boy takes of his hand from his head slowly, the camera moves backwards at the same rate. The camera then cuts away and shows how the boy is on the floor while the camera moves slowly to the right. We could see so many papers scattered on the floor. 2) Shot 2: Extreme close up of the boys knees while his on his knees on the floor. This connotes that he is devastated. People usually collapse when they are in a dilemma. 3) Shot 3: The boy in the centre of a school hallway. (Long Shot) Everything is destroyed around him. He is the only one there so we assume that he might be the one who done it. But at this point it seems pretty unusual as we do not know anything about the boy. 4) Shot 4: The boy is the centre of attention as the camera is primarily focused on him. The camera then moves backwards to show all the damage that is caused. At this point we may believe that the boy has supernatural powers. Then there is a medium close up of the boy looking around. 5) Shot 5: You can see the boy walking through the door passing a room where the teacher is trying to call someone. Maybe police? while she has the telephone near her ears. The expression on the teachers face is negative. She quickly shuts the door. You can clearly see that she is terrified. 6) Shot 6: The boy then puts on a hat. The hat is symbolic as it suggests that he is trying to cover himself and he wears the hat so people cannot recognize him. He tries to hide his identity. He acts normal when the police car arrives. He then starts walking fast. 7) Shot 7: The boy is riding his bicycle very fast. The camera moves forward swiftly. (Wide shot) from behind. This can suggest that he is being chased. Our suspicion of the boy having supernatural powers is assured at this point. Additionally, the shots are taken from different angles while he is riding his bicycle. --- wide shot of his house. He then opens the door comes in (Extreme close up shot) of his hand closing the door. 8) Shot 8: The boy turns back to look at the TV as its on. It states ‘ Supernatural occurrence at local school’. We as audience are curious to know why he is doing this. He hates his childhood – This is the point where we see a transaction of the nature in this music video. We take the boy much more seriously than before. He acts like a adult.
  • 4. 10) The boy tries escaping from the back door. You can see (close up) of the keys on the table. The boy stretches his hand (Mid shot). At this point the audience get to see his superpowers visually, as the boy lifts the keys from the table and attracts the key like a magnetic force and clenches his fist. - The police then break in from the front door. 11) When the police officer walks in the door. The camera is tilted upwards. The teddy bear is rotating in the mid air. The prop connotes that the boy has more power over the police. 12) Wide shot of boy in the jungle running away – he gets caught by the police and the headlights on the cars are also focused on him. The boy is surrounded by the police force with guns. This has a hidden message as it shows the view of other people i.e. society. They view the boy as very different and could not accept him. That’s why he is ‘bullied’ and ‘chased’. 13) Long shot of the boy. He is curled up on the floor and does not fight them. Instead he uses power again to push everyone. The light is low key as it is in the jungle. However when he uses power he gives out a bright light. – camera fades to a bright white background.
