Saint Michael theArchangel,
defend us in battle. Be our
protection against the wickedness
and snares of the devil; May God
rebuke him, we humbly pray; And
do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly
Host, by the power of God, thrust
into hell Satan and all evil spirits
who wander through the world for
the ruin of souls.
Prayer to Saint
Michael

#6 The Celtic people lived on the island that is now known as Britain. They were unable to repel the invasion of Scottish and Irish tribes in 449. The Germanic tribes of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes (from Denmark) were requested for assistance by the Celts. So, English history and literature starts in 449 AD. Instead of helping, they attacked and took over the island for themselves and dubbed it "Angle-land."
#7 This is why there are often several versions of the same story.
All literature was oral (spoken), not written, because there was no real written language yet. Literature and history was passed down by Scops, people in each tribe who composed stories and songs about the tribe and its heroes.
Due to passing from generations to generations, the authors kept to be unknown and since it was also in oral form.
#8 It was written in Old English
Luckily for us someone translated it to Modern English
#10 Beowulf is an Old English epic poem consisting of 3182 alliterative long lines. It is possibly the oldest surviving long poem in Old English and is commonly cited as one of the most important works of Old English literature. It was written in England some time between the 8th and the early 11th century.
HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE

Grendel – He seeks for a revenge
Grendel’s Mother – A grieving mother weeping for the death of her son and also seeks for revenge because of the death of her son, Grendel.
#16 1. Beowulf gains popularity in Denmark when he announces his intention to combat Grendel and settle the score, and much more so after he murders his mother. When he dies in the last battle against the dragon, he dies in the same way. As a result, he upholds the heroic code and serves as another shining example of valor, chivalry, courage, and sacrifice.
2. Beowulf shows loyalty when Hrothgar, the Danish king, faces the evil of Grendel and his mother, he accepts the offer.
3. Beowulf’s offer to King Hrothgar to fight against Grendel is based on partly bravery and partly desire to repay his debt of providing shelter to his father. He even battles the dragon by the end of the story to demonstrate his bravery and this desire for popularity for bravery takes his life.
