Carthage founded in 814 BCE as a colony of the city-state of Tyre In 650 BCE, Carthage plants a colony of its own From around 539 BCE on, the Phoenician homeland was attacked and conquered by various empires (beginning with Persia) Carthage was on its own… From humble beginnings
One Colony… to rule them all When its mother city of Tyre was conquered: Many Phoenicians fled to Carthage Carthage’s numbers and status grew Carthage now assumed the role of Leader Carthage used diplomacy, bribery, and violence to subdue all the other Phoenician colonies
