This document discusses the ecological origins of diseases and pandemics, and proposes sustainable solutions. This lectures proposes a different normative regard on food, not as a mono-dimensional commodity that can only be accesed through money, but as a multi-dimensional commons that shall be governed by people (all eaters, some producers), partner States and profit-restricted social enterprises to guarantee that everybody has access to food by different means. Since food systems are main drivers of Earth destruction, we need to radically transform the way we produce and eat food to keep on living in this planet without exhausting the natural resources that are vital for human life: food, water and air. Food for the Cities
In 2008, the world’s urban population outnumbered its rural population for the first time in history. By 2030, 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. This urbanization process goes together closely with growing urban poverty and food insecurity. Currently, approximately one-third of the world’s population is living in slums and informal settlements. If prevailing trends continue, this figure could reach 2 billion by 2030.
As cities expand, so do the food needs of urban families. While impacts of the food and financial crisis affect both rural and urban populations, the urban poor have been among the hardest hit. Urban consumers are almost exclusively dependent on food purchases and variations in food prices and income directly translate into diminished purchasing power and rising rates of food insecurity, thus compromising dietary quantity and quality. Changes in lifestyles have further contributed to increased urban malnutrition and diet-related chronic diseases.
Impacts on the urban poor FAO estimates that, mainly as a result of high food prices, the number of chronically hungry people in the world rose by at least 100 million in the past years to currently reach over 1 billion people, with the urban poor, women and children being particularly vulnerable. Moreover, the financial and economic crisis is expected to continue affecting the urban poor in the near future, following projected declines in export growth and capital inflows.
Changes in climate, coupled to humanitarian crisis, add to challenges faced by cities and the urban poor. Agricultural production and urban food supply are increasingly affected by droughts and floods. More and more refugees and internally displaced persons are seeking refuge in urban neighbourhoods as opposed to camps, and demands for urban food are increasing.

Currently, the privatization and commodification of food resources has led to concentration of control in the food system and prioritized profits over access. Reframing food as a commons recognizes it as a human right and entitles all people to a minimum amount of food, while limiting the proprietary claims of food companies. Vivero Pol proposes decentralized, community-based food production systems as a transition toward greater "re-commonification" of food.

Cities are growing at a rapid phase, due to exponential growth of populations all over the world. The world population might stabilize by 2070 after reaching the peak population levels of about 9 billion. Already the urban population, living mostly in cities has reached 50% of the world population. Cities in the last few centuries have evolved coping with changes in social, economic, cultural, aesthetics, utility, historical, political, natural and environmental factors. There is always an interface between the interests of old and new generations of people sharing the same space. The buildings have more life than the people living in them. Each building is at least able to provide space for at least two generations. The comfort levels of one generation and the next are different in same space. There are often changes brought with time in any building. Similarly the infrastructure is also changing at a rapid phase as the transportation means and systems are changing. The access to power, drinking water, and open spaces for cultural and social events, educational institutions, markets, etc. also impacts the living space. The security and basic amenities are the main factors of consideration for not moving away from the congested cities. There is always an overlap of old and new adaptation factors, creating resilience for coexistence. The remembrance of a space and events in once own life time impact the people, and they love to continue in similar space. There is a kind of energy that one gets, while returning to the same space, it is often seen that the old people prefer living in the space they are used to and they often live longer too. There are emotions too acting up on the life of the people. Considering all the above factors, each city can be considered a single organism, having its own identity and also there are various diverse spaces within it. It is like a human body single living things, but various parts of the human body function for the happiness of the whole. Cities are growing at a rapid phase, due to exponential growth of populations all over the world. The world population might stabilize by 2070 after reaching the peak population levels of about 9 billion. Already the urban population, living mostly in cities has reached 50% of the world population. Cities in the last few centuries have evolved coping with changes in social, economic, cultural, aesthetics, utility, historical, political, natural and environmental factors. There is always an interface between the interests of old and new generations of people sharing the same space. The buildings have more life than the people living in them. Each building is at least able to provide space for at least two generations. The comfort levels of one generation and the next are different in same space. There are often changes brought with time in any building. Similarly the infrastructure is also changing at a rapid phase as the transportation means and systems are changing. The access to power, drinking water, and open spaces for cultural and social events, educational institutions, markets, etc. also impacts the living space. The security and basic amenities are the main factors of consideration for not moving away from the congested cities. There is always an overlap of old and new adaptation factors, creating resilience for coexistence. The remembrance of a space and events in once own life time impact the people, and they love to continue in similar space. There is a kind of energy that one gets, while returning to the same space, it is often seen that the old people prefer living in the space they are used to and they often live longer too. There are emotions too acting up on the life of the people. Considering all the above factors, each city can be considered a single organism, having its own identity and also there are various diverse spaces within it. It is like a human body single living things, but various parts of the human body function for the happiness of the whole. - 1. Sitopia: how food can save the world Abstract of talk for the CUIMPB-Centre Ernest Lluch, Barcelona on 22-02-21 by Carolyn Steel We live in a world shaped by food. Our cities and hinterlands were shaped by it. Our daily routines are structured around it. Politics and economics are driven by it. Our ecological footprint is determined by it. Our sense of identity is inseparable from it. Our survival depends on it. How, then, have we come to consider food as just another commodity: something to be made as cheap and convenient as possible, while we get on with the 'more important' things in life? Our profound disconnection with food, our most vital necessity, is the curious legacy of industrialisation. It is also the symptom of a way of life we can no longer afford. With a rapidly increasing global population, urbanisation, climate change and peak oil, we face a ‘Neo-Geographical Age’, in which our way of life and use of resources will matter as much to us as they did to our ancient ancestors. Food is not only the most powerful human agent shaping our world, but is nevertheless one that we can harness as a design tool to rethink how we live and create new dwelling models. My term sitopia (food-place) describes this approach (from the Greek sitos + topos, place). The primary focus of sitopia is to rethink the urban-rural relationship, the basic dynamic of human civilisation. We live in cities, but if our food comes from somewhere else, to what extent do we really dwell there? I call this dilemma the ‘urban paradox’ – the fact that cities could not exist without countryside, yet few of us living in cities today can see the landscapes that feed us. Today, we urgently need to rethink the way we live – and food is a powerful medium through which to do that. By thinking and acting through food, we can address such questions as how to rebalance our relationship with nature, how to build more resilient, equitable societies, how and where to build cities, how we should feed and live in them, and how we might ‘post-fit’ existing ones to make them more sustainable. Most importantly, we can use food to reimagine our idea of a good life.
