Carl Stokes was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised by his mother after his father died when he was three years old. He dropped out of high school but later earned his GED and bachelor's degree. Stokes was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives and later became the first African American mayor of Cleveland, one of the ten largest cities in the U.S. at the time. He received numerous honors for his public service career and contributions before his death.
