Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military. President Nixon established it in 1971 so Americans could pay respects to men and women who died for their country. On Memorial Day, people often visit cemeteries and place flowers on soldiers' graves, hold parades, and gather at churches or memorials to remember those who died in wars.
