Carl Benz (1844-1929) was a German inventor and automotive engineer who is widely credited with inventing the first practical motorcar. He founded Benz & Cie. in 1883, which later became today's Mercedes-Benz. Some of his most important inventions include the Motorwagen, considered the first automobile, patented in 1886. He also obtained the world's first patent for a vehicle with an internal combustion engine fueled by gasoline in 1879. Throughout his career, Benz continued developing new models and technologies that moved the automotive industry forward.
