ou may not know it yet but if you own a
Fitbit, smartwatch or any kind of bodily
sensor that records how many steps your
take in a daily basis or number of miles
attained during a morning jog (like my
husband), you are very much invested in
the growing wearable technology.
Wearables have hit the market like a
hailstorm. From watches to glasses,
headgear to belts, to all assortments of
chips and sensors built into clothes and
accessories, this market doesn’t seem to be
slowing down anytime soon. In fact,
wearables are estimated to be more than a
$70 billion market by 2024, according to
IDTechEx.
Wearable Device Magazine-
www.wearabledevices.com, wearable
technology aka “wearable devices“, and
“wearables” all refer to electronic
technologies or computers
that are incorporated into items of clothing
and accessories which can comfortably be
worn on the body." IHS defines
wearable technology as “products worn on
the user’s body for an extended period of
time, significantly enhancing the user’s
experience as a result of the product being
worn.”

Wearables have the possibility to
disrupt workplace productivity
according to new study. In a report
released by
PricewaterhouseCoopers, 77%
surveyed think that increased
employee efficiency is one of the
biggest benefits of wearable tech
with 46% reporting they think
employers should invest in the
devices. TechCrunch
I asked, they responded - to figure
out how others defined "wearable
tech and how they can explain it to
patients, loved one and caregivers
who are in with the tech lingo. The
question - "define wearable
technology to a caregiver and
patient"

responses I received .. ... ....
Wearables
Defined
Wearable technologies are products,
which can help patients ‘own’ their
health. By ‘wearing’ the technology
e.g. as a bracelet or adhesive patch,
patients can easily receive the right
information at the right time for their
individual issues. For example, an
overweight diabetic patient can
better manage his/her condition with
convenient, 24/7 information about
his/her glucose, nutrition or exercise
level. One can connect the cause and
effect of their lifestyle decisions to
their health and make better choices.

Stats!
In June 2013, the Pew Internet and
American Life project tackled
caregiving and found that adults who
are unpaid caregivers for a parent or
child use online and mobile health
tools considerably more than the
average American, but only
59% of connected caregivers find
internet tools helpful in giving care.
52% said that online tools helped them
deal with the stress of being a
caregiver.
Early 2014, Deloitte estimated around 1
0 million wearable gadgets would be
sold by the end of the year.
By September, Juniper Research
estimate 27 million devices in 2017.
Projections from experts says that we
will be be buying more than 100
million wearable devices in 2017.

"Wearable technology can be a watch, a
bracelet, a shirt or even shoes that can tell you
something about your body. Wearables can
help you monitor how many steps you take,
your heart rate or even the risk of a symptom
flareup. They are worn most of the time and
provide actionable health information. It's like
a smart phone that you wear."

like a watch. A device like Fitbit or
similar products from Withings and
iHealth gives an individual a way to
keep track of exercise or heart rate or
blood pressure in more precise ways,
most specifically by allowing more
frequent and diverse collection of the
data, with less effort by the patient.

"Your watch is wearable technology."
Technology is simply science applied to an
objective, such as telling time and the
evolution of wearable technology in
healthcare is the same.
Wearables in healthcare are analogous to the
evolution of how people tell time. We started
with the sundial and began the process of
finding better, easier ways to tell time and
establish standards for the telling of time. A
clock or timepiece gives an individual the
ability to know the time without the need to
calculate where the earth is in its daily orbit
and making a timepiece wearable -
transforming it into a watch - gives the wearer
a great, simple way to keep track of the time
even with no knowledge of how time is
calculated. Now we call all be on time for
work...
Wearable technology simply attaches a
scientific instrument to a person, most
commonly in a semi-permanent way,

When looking for the perfect caregiver, many families don't know where to
begin. Though the Internet offers a quick solution for finding caregiver
information, it can also be a misleading source. Whether looking for a
babysitter for a few weeknights or a full-time nanny, knowing the history of
your caregivers is vital. In fact, according to the Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention, babysitters are responsible for 4.2 percent of
criminal acts against children under six years of age. Though this is a small
percentage, some believe these types of crimes could have been prevented
with the appropriate information up front. When conducting a background
check, there are two main types to choose from: live court research and
online database searches.

Information You Should
Know Before You DO
Darren Dupriest,
President and CEO of Validity Screening Solutions.
Feature
Online databases:
With an affordable price tag and a quick turnaround
with information, many people turn to online sites
when looking for the appropriate caregiver for their
family. Though many of these sites tout that their
applicants are 'mom recommended,' many are simply
electronic databases with little investigative
reporting on applicant history. Though they do report
major offenses, such as felonies, these sites often
miss the mark on reporting minor crimes and
misdemeanors. These are the types of crimes that
speak volumes about an applicant's character and
past.
Live court research:
In addition to a traditional online search, you should
also conduct the more thorough option of live court
research. Though a more costly choice, live court
research extensively searches current and past court
records, both state and federal. Look for a screening
company with the most up-to-date information, such
as Validity Screening Solutions, who has more than
1,600 record researchers that cover all jurisdictions
in the United States, to offer the most current and
accurate information.

checklist
"A thorough screening includes
live court research in addition to
an online web search," said
Darren Dupriest, president and
CEO of Validity Screening
Solutions. "Make sure your search
includes an all-encompassing
look at an applicant's
verifications, records with federal
and state agencies and other
personal assessment screenings,
which are all important
determinants when choosing the
best caregiver for your family.
Criminal Records: A thorough
search will identify any felony or
misdemeanor criminal convictions. This
search should be current enough to
include any pending cases involving the
candidate.
Sex offender registries: A
criminal record search alone does not
include significant sex offender
information because each state has its
own stand-alone registry. Be sure to
look for a screening company that
offers a multi-state check.
Driving records: For caregivers
required to drive on the job, a thorough
check of their driving history is
essential. This includes the possession
of a valid driver's license, and ensuring
it has not been suspended, revoked and
the applicant has no objectionable
moving violations.
Verification: A proper check will
ensure that past employment,
certifications and references are
verified through the original source. A
complete review of a potential
caregiver ensures you are entrusting
your family to the safest, best care
possible. It also provides peace of mind
while you are away from them, which,
in itself, is priceless.

Migraine Buddy
www.migrainebuddy.com
Migraine Buddy is an advanced tracking and
reporting app designed to track your
migraine syndromes and provide objective
records for you and your doctor to create a
customized treatment plan. App helps you
identify the triggers and lifestyle factors so
you can take preventive measures to
improve your condition.
Their goal:
To help patients and doctors do a better job
of collaborating on migraine care.
Following its recent launch, Migraine
Buddy has quickly become the number one
migraine application on Google Play.
We chatted with the pregnant co-founder of
Healint, Veronica Chew, months ago, who
told us that the inspiration for the app
actually came from the discussions their
team had with several leading neurologists.
Their previous big project had been
developing a mobile alert system for stroke
patients. Many stroke patients don’t have
smartphones, so Healint decided they’d
shift their focus to a larger demographic–
migraine sufferers.“It mimics how a doctor
prescribes different medication to patients
to figure out what works. Most other
migraine apps are not as comprehensive.
We collect data that’s action-driven, so that
we can help patients make the right
decisions.”
.
AppWeLove...
Migraine Buddy is free and combines both
clinical and data science approaches. Mor
e than a simple diary to track and record
migraines,
"Migraine is a condition that they get
asked the most about and a lot of patients
have a history of not being able to tell
exactly what happened. They can’t answer
questions about whether or not certain
treatments helped them, how many
migraines they had, what they did, or what
they were doing before,” explained Chew.
Accelerating Research While
Helping Migraineurs
Healint has conducted their 1st global
virtual study of migraine with results -
interesting data and evidence among sleep
duration, weather changes and migraine
attacks. They will be presenting at ARCH
2015 (Asian Regional Conference for
Headache) in January 2015 in Chiang Mai,
Thaïland.
What Are The Numbers?
- Migraine is a chronic condition
characterized by severe headaches.
- It affects nearly 15% of the population
- That almost 1 billion people worldwide
- Half of migraine sufferers have their first
attack before the age of 12
- The World Health Organization ranks
migraine in the top 20 of the world’s most
disabling medical illnesses.
The iOS version will be available for
iPhone users early 2015.

How to talk to Yo
ur kids About
Dementia
Dementia is an overall term for diseases and
conditions characterized by a decline in memory
or other thinking skills that affects a
person’sability to perform everyday activities.
Dementia is caused by damage tonerve cells in
the brain, which are called neurons. As a result of
the damage, neurons can no longer function
normally and may die. This, in turn, can lead to
changes in one’s memory, behavior and ability to
think clearly. In Alzheimer’s disease,
the damage to and death of neurons
eventually impair one’s ability to carry out basic
bodily functions such
as walking and swallowing. People in the final
stages of the disease are bed-bound and require
around-theclock care.
Alzheimer’sdisease isthe most common type
of dementia and is ultimately fatal.
When dementia hits, it can be hard for kids to
understand why their grandparent is changing -
not acting the same, forgetting names, etc. It is
also hard for parents, who are sandwiched in care.
It can heart breaking.
The best way solution: Is to explain whats
happending to the kids. Be homest and use the
opportunity to educate the kids.
The book,
Grandma
by Jessica Shepherd
Is a beautifully illustrated children's picture books
about dementia. I recommend this story about
Oliver and his grandma, told in his own words, for
reading with children aged four to eight.Ms.
Shepherd does a wonderful job
writting this book in a language that
children will understand, discusses what
dementia is, how having it changes people and
what you can do to help a person with dementia.
It is written to help children talk about their
feelings and find new ways to
enjoy spending time together.

"Grandma is a really interesting book by
Jessica Shepherd. I enjoyed the book
because it was very educational. I learned
about dementia and what it means. I was
able to teach my litter sister and my
cousins. I think my Grandpa has dementia.
Book has great artwork. It is a nice, sweet
children's story book that explains what
happens grandparents & older people
start
to lose their memory.
Jazie Erowele,
10 year reviewer
"The book :Grandma" helped me
understand what dementia
means. I did more research on Google and
I learned more about Alzheimer's disease.
It's scary to know that people can lose
their memory as they get older. There is
no cure for it. I can now explain to my 4
year old sister and my cousins what it
means too.

As you age, your body goes through
many changes, including differences in
eyesight which can negatively affect day-
to-day activities.
You may have noticed these differences
while trying to read the morning paper or
getting dressed for the day. While this
change – also known as presbyopia – is
normal (even for individuals who have
always had perfect vision), it can disrupt
the lives of those affected. Luckily there
arewaystomakethesevisionchangesless
noticeable and less impactful on daily life.
It’s important for people to understand
that what happens between 40 and 50
yearsoldtooureyesupcloseiscompletely
normal,” said Howard Purcell, O.D. and
senior vice president of customer
development for Essilor of America, the
creators of Varilux lenses, the leading
progressive lens solution for presbyopia
patients.
Whilepresbyopiaaffectsmostpeopleoverthe
age of 45, more than half of those with it don’t
receive adequate correction. In fact, it’s
estimated that by 2020, 2.3 billion people will
have this condition and will require some type
of correction.
Understanding the eyes
According to Dr. Purcell, understanding this
typical anatomical change in aging eyes is
simple. The lens inside the eye needs to
change shape to allow focus on objects,
whether they are near or far. This lens grows
throughout human life; but around 40 years of
age, it isn’t as flexible as it was in younger
years. This is around the time when the
common issues associated with presbyopia
begin to appear.
Dr. Purcell emphasizes the importance of
routine eye exams, not only to evaluate the
condition of the eyes, but to ensure systemic

determine early warning signs of
hypertension, diabetes and more – just by
looking at your eyes.

A progressive approach
While many individuals with
deteriorating eyesight turn to bifocals for
their vision needs, progressive lenses
may be a better solution. Progressive
lenses transition from distance vision to
near vision without the visible line
associated with bifocal lenses. The use of
high quality progressive lenses has been
known to ease eye strain and provide
natural vision correction.
Many patients believe there is only one
progressive lens product available, which

options are available. Varilux progressive
lenses, the first ever and still the leading
progressive lens product and only
provider of W.A.V.E. Technology:
Wavefront Advanced Vision
Enhancement, offers the wearer
sharpness of vision and smooth viewing
transitions at every distance.
It is important to speak to your doctor
about your own individual visual needs,
and it is equally vital to know you have a
choice in the lenses you wear every day.

Before I share what we’re thankful for this year, I will like to share a recent email we received Kodi Effong, a mom of 3, full time laywer, who is also caring for your her inlaws. She found CareNovate Magazine via Twitter. Her email reads "I saw a tweet via @carenmag about handwashing. As a mom of 2 boys, I am obsessed. Intrigued about the tweet, clicked on the link. What a surprise! I really enjoyed the simplicity of the health & medical related magazine - not full of medical jargon, articles from real patients and those who are juggling work and everything else. Enjoying all the issues and subscribed to the app. Thank you & good luck" Emails like this is proof that that CareNovate Magazine is not about the editors, reviewers. It is truly about all of US. As we continue to live in a fast paced digital world of demanding schedules for kids, doctor's appointment for mom and granparents, new apps and innovations, we all need support, resources. • 9. ou may not know it yet but if you own a Fitbit, smartwatch or any kind of bodily sensor that records how many steps your take in a daily basis or number of miles attained during a morning jog (like my husband), you are very much invested in the growing wearable technology. Wearables have hit the market like a hailstorm. From watches to glasses, headgear to belts, to all assortments of chips and sensors built into clothes and accessories, this market doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. In fact, wearables are estimated to be more than a $70 billion market by 2024, according to IDTechEx. Wearable Device Magazine- www.wearabledevices.com, wearable technology aka “wearable devices“, and “wearables” all refer to electronic technologies or computers that are incorporated into items of clothing and accessories which can comfortably be worn on the body." • 10. Wearable technologies are products, which can help patients ‘own’ their health. By ‘wearing’ the technology e.g. as a bracelet or adhesive patch, patients can easily receive the right information at the right time for their individual issues. For example, an overweight diabetic patient can better manage his/her condition with convenient, 24/7 information about his/her glucose, nutrition or exercise level. One can connect the cause and effect of their lifestyle decisions to their health and make better choices. Lisa Carmel Experienced Branding & Marketing Executive Follow Lisa via Linkedin Wearable technologies are products that incorporate sensors to read the body's biologic signals and which can be in any form that touches the body, from jewelry/watches to bandaids to clothing, etc. Lisa Suennen Managing Partner at Venture Valkyrie LLC Follow Lisa via Linkedin Stats! In June 2013, the Pew Internet and American Life project tackled caregiving and found that adults who are unpaid caregivers for a parent or child use online and mobile health tools considerably more than the average American, but only 59% of connected caregivers find internet tools helpful in giving care. 52% said that online tools helped them deal with the stress of being a caregiver. Early 2014, Deloitte estimated around 1 0 million wearable gadgets would be sold by the end of the year. By September, Juniper Research estimate 27 million devices in 2017. Projections from experts says that we will be be buying more than 100 million wearable devices in 2017. A
  • 11. "Wearable technology can be a watch, a bracelet, a shirt or even shoes that can tell you something about your body. Wearables can help you monitor how many steps you take, your heart rate or even the risk of a symptom flareup. They are worn most of the time and provide actionable health information. It's like a smart phone that you wear." Juliet Oberding Co-Founder at Predictably Well; IP Attorney Follow Juliet via Linkedin like a watch. A device like Fitbit or similar products from Withings and iHealth gives an individual a way to keep track of exercise or heart rate or blood pressure in more precise ways, most specifically by allowing more frequent and diverse collection of the data, with less effort by the patient. Suzanne Wrede Founder, Chief History Maker; MakeHx Follow Suzanne via Linkedin "Your watch is wearable technology." Technology is simply science applied to an objective, such as telling time and the evolution of wearable technology in healthcare is the same. Wearables in healthcare are analogous to the evolution of how people tell time. We started with the sundial and began the process of finding better, easier ways to tell time and establish standards for the telling of time. A clock or timepiece gives an individual the ability to know the time without the need to calculate where the earth is in its daily orbit and making a timepiece wearable - transforming it into a watch - gives the wearer a great, simple way to keep track of the time even with no knowledge of how time is calculated. Now we call all be on time for work... Wearable technology simply attaches a scientific instrument to a person, most commonly in a semi-permanent way,

  • 14. When looking for the perfect caregiver, many families don't know where to begin. Though the Internet offers a quick solution for finding caregiver information, it can also be a misleading source. Whether looking for a babysitter for a few weeknights or a full-time nanny, knowing the history of your caregivers is vital. In fact, according to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, babysitters are responsible for 4.2 percent of criminal acts against children under six years of age. Though this is a small percentage, some believe these types of crimes could have been prevented with the appropriate information up front. When conducting a background check, there are two main types to choose from: live court research and online database searches. • 15. Online databases: With an affordable price tag and a quick turnaround with information, many people turn to online sites when looking for the appropriate caregiver for their family. Though many of these sites tout that their applicants are 'mom recommended,' many are simply electronic databases with little investigative reporting on applicant history. Though they do report major offenses, such as felonies, these sites often miss the mark on reporting minor crimes and misdemeanors. These are the types of crimes that speak volumes about an applicant's character and past. Live court research: In addition to a traditional online search, you should also conduct the more thorough option of live court research. Though a more costly choice, live court research extensively searches current and past court records, both state and federal. Look for a screening company with the most up-to-date information, such as Validity Screening Solutions, who has more than 1,600 record researchers that cover all jurisdictions in the United States, to offer the most current and accurate information. types of back ground checks Before choosing the appropriate background check, make sure it hits all the important marks listed on the next page: Create a caregiver checklist "A thorough screening includes live court research in addition to an online web search," said Darren Dupriest, president and CEO of Validity Screening Solutions. "Make sure your search includes an all-encompassing look at an applicant's verifications, records with federal and state agencies and other personal assessment screenings, which are all important determinants when choosing the best caregiver for your family.
  • 16. Criminal Records: A thorough search will identify any felony or misdemeanor criminal convictions. This search should be current enough to include any pending cases involving the candidate. Sex offender registries: A criminal record search alone does not include significant sex offender information because each state has its own stand-alone registry. Be sure to look for a screening company that offers a multi-state check. Driving records: For caregivers required to drive on the job, a thorough check of their driving history is essential. This includes the possession of a valid driver's license, and ensuring it has not been suspended, revoked and the applicant has no objectionable moving violations. Verification: A proper check will ensure that past employment, certifications and references are verified through the original source. A complete review of a potential caregiver ensures you are entrusting your family to the safest, best care possible. It also provides peace of mind while you are away from them, which, in itself, is priceless. 3 4 2 1 AppWeLove... Migraine Buddy www.migrainebuddy.com Migraine Buddy is an advanced tracking and reporting app designed to track your migraine syndromes and provide objective records for you and your doctor to create a customized treatment plan. App helps you identify the triggers and lifestyle factors so you can take preventive measures to improve your condition. Their goal: To help patients and doctors do a better job of collaborating on migraine care. Following its recent launch, Migraine Buddy has quickly become the number one migraine application on Google Play. We chatted with the pregnant co-founder of Healint, Veronica Chew, months ago, who told us that the inspiration for the app actually came from the discussions their team had with several leading neurologists. Their previous big project had been developing a mobile alert system for stroke patients. Many stroke patients don’t have smartphones, so Healint decided they’d shift their focus to a larger demographic– migraine sufferers.“It mimics how a doctor prescribes different medication to patients to figure out what works. Most other migraine apps are not as comprehensive. We collect data that’s action-driven, so that we can help patients make the right decisions.”

  • 33. How to talk to Yo ur kids About Dementia Dementia is an overall term for diseases and conditions characterized by a decline in memory or other thinking skills that affects a person’sability to perform everyday activities. Dementia is caused by damage tonerve cells in the brain, which are called neurons. As a result of the damage, neurons can no longer function normally and may die. This, in turn, can lead to changes in one’s memory, behavior and ability to think clearly. In Alzheimer’s disease, the damage to and death of neurons eventually impair one’s ability to carry out basic bodily functions such as walking and swallowing. People in the final stages of the disease are bed-bound and require around-theclock care. Alzheimer’sdisease isthe most common type of dementia and is ultimately fatal. When dementia hits, it can be hard for kids to understand why their grandparent is changing - not acting the same, forgetting names, etc. It is also hard for parents, who are sandwiched in care. It can heart breaking. The best way solution: Is to explain whats happending to the kids. Be homest and use the opportunity to educate the kids. The book, Grandma by Jessica Shepherd Is a beautifully illustrated children's picture books about dementia. I recommend this story about Oliver and his grandma, told in his own words, for reading with children aged four to eight.Ms. Shepherd does a wonderful job writting this book in a language that children will understand, discusses what dementia is, how having it changes people and what you can do to help a person with dementia. It is written to help children talk about their feelings and find new ways to enjoy spending time together. Katie & Jazie are 10 year old twins, book lovers and future doctors and we have the honor of their review of "Grandma" They were asked to read it and explain your thoughts to their 4 year old sister and cousin. We asked them to be brief, not to overwhelm the young ones. See their unedited review Katie Erowele, 10 year reviewer "Grandma is a really interesting book by Jessica Shepherd. I enjoyed the book because it was very educational. I learned about dementia and what it means. I was able to teach my litter sister and my cousins. I think my Grandpa has dementia. Book has great artwork. It is a nice, sweet children's story book that explains what happens grandparents & older people start to lose their memory. Jazie Erowele, 10 year reviewer "The book :Grandma" helped me understand what dementia means. I did more research on Google and I learned more about Alzheimer's disease. It's scary to know that people can lose their memory as they get older. There is no cure for it. I can now explain to my 4 year old sister and my cousins what it means too.

You may have noticed these differences while trying to read the morning paper or getting dressed for the day. While this change – also known as presbyopia – is normal (even for individuals who have always had perfect vision), it can disrupt the lives of those affected. Luckily there arewaystomakethesevisionchangesless noticeable and less impactful on daily life. It’s important for people to understand that what happens between 40 and 50 yearsoldtooureyesupcloseiscompletely normal,” said Howard Purcell, O.D. and senior vice president of customer development for Essilor of America, the creators of Varilux lenses, the leading progressive lens solution for presbyopia patients. Whilepresbyopiaaffectsmostpeopleoverthe age of 45, more than half of those with it don’t receive adequate correction. In fact, it’s estimated that by 2020, 2.3 billion people will have this condition and will require some type of correction. Understanding the eyes According to Dr. Purcell, understanding this typical anatomical change in aging eyes is simple. The lens inside the eye needs to change shape to allow focus on objects, whether they are near or far. This lens grows throughout human life; but around 40 years of age, it isn’t as flexible as it was in younger years. This is around the time when the common issues associated with presbyopia begin to appear.
