Do an informational interviewHow are volunteers treated by this organization? Look for established organizations with a well-managed volunteer programBe clear about the amount of time you have available for this organization. Clear expectations about what you will do, is there a job description of some kind – can you create one?Follow-up – don’t take it personally if an organization does not answer your request to volunteer right away. They may be overwhelmed with work. If you do not get a response in a week or two, try sending a friendly email reminder or making a phone call. When you have found volunteer work that interests you, try it out before committing yourself too much. Visit the organization, work there for a limited amount of time and decide whether this is the right place and right kind of work for youYou can use me as a referenceYou don’t need to speak English perfectly to volunteer.
