2. Cardiac tumors are abnormal growths in the heart.
There are many types of cardiac tumors. But, cardiac tumors, in
general, are rare.
The tumors can be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous
(benign).
Tumors that begin growing in the heart and stay there are called
primary tumors.
Tumors that start in another part of the body and move to the
heart (metastasize) are called secondary tumors. Most cardiac
tumors are benign.
6. Intracardiac myxomas are the most common benign tumours of the
heart and in majority are located in LA and rise from interatrial
septum
Most common in women between 30 and 60 years of age.
7. Left Atrial Myxomas
Clinical features –
Triad of
• Embolic phenomenon – Systemic emboli involving the brain,
heart, extremities, kidney and aortic bifurcation.
• Systemic symptoms – Fever, anorexia, weight loss, myalgia,
arthritis, Raynaud’s phenomenon, petechiae and finger clubbing
(due to immunological reactions to necrotizing tumour).
8. Obstructive manifestations – Obstruction of mitral valve
simulates mitral stenosis producing left heart failure. A ball-valve
mechanism can produce recurrent pulmonary oedema or stenosis,
which can lead to sudden death.
9. Signs
1) Loud S1 and accentuated S2 .
2) “Tumor plop” – Early diastolic sound produced by prolapse of the
tumor through mitral valve.
3) Apical diastolic or systolic murmur or both usually present.
Changing murmurs due to varying mitral obstruction.
10. Dyspnea
Fever
Weight loss
Severe dizziness
Fatigue
Malaise
Chills
