About Sasan Gir
Sasan Gir, the last abode of the Asiatic Lions in the world, beckons the tourists to explore the
wild side of the nature. In the early 19th century, the Asiatic Lions populated a vast area of South
and South-west area extending from the Greece in the east to the far west area, now known as
Bangladesh.
History of Gir Sanctuary
The relentless hunting for six decades from 1800 to1860 saw a great decline in the population of
the Asiatic Lions. In 1886, the last of the Asiatic Lions outside Gir was killed in Rewah and last
sighting outside India was recorded in Iran in 1941. The Asiatic lions in Gir survived because of
the initiative taken by the Nawab of Junagadh at the perusal of Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of
India at that time. In 1901 the Nawab of Junagadh completely banned the hunting of lion and
dedicated the Gir Forest region for their conservation. In 1955 the Indian Government banned
killing of the Lion and drew up a protected zone known Gir Forest and Sanctuary to create a
haven in the wilderness, where they could flourish. The last census done in 2010 indicates 411
lions in Gir, which is more than double the figure of 200 that was recorded in the first ever
census in 1930.
Area and Topography
The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, is located 65 km, south-east of Junagadh
in Gujarat. It was established in 1965 to protect the Asiatic Lion- the last of its kind in world,
from extinction. The Gir forest area, which once covered over 3000 square km in 1880, was
reduced to just over 2500 square km by the mid-20th century, and is only 1412 square km, today.
Of that, a mere 258 square km makes up the National Park - the protected core zone for
lions. Most of the area is rugged hills, with high ridges and densely forested valleys, wide
grassland plateaus, and isolated hilltops. There are seven rivers in the Gir region, namely,
Godavari, Shetrunji, Datardi, Shingoda, Machhundri, Hiran and Raval, of which the latter four
have dams. The Hiran River is perennial, flows throughout the year, while others are seasonal.
Flora and Fauna
Sasan Gir is replete with diverse flora and fauna. Half of the park area is Teak forest while the
other half is made up of non-Teak deciduous trees with broad, evergreen leaves. The park also
has some areas that are of open scrub and Savannah grassland types. More than 500 species of
plants exist in the sanctuary and they provide diverse flora cover to the forest and food for the
different herbivores. For wildlife lovers and tourists, the Gir forest is perfect place to observe
fauna - mammal, birds and reptiles, besides the majestic Lions, in their natural habitat.
The reclusive Sambar- the largest of deer family, Chausingha- the world’s only 4-horned
antelope and Chinkara- the only Gazel in the world with horns in both females and males, are
species of deer that abound the forest. The fastest of the all the Indian antelopes- the Black Buck
is also found here, though in less numbers, because of lack of larger open tracts of grasslands,
which is their natural habitat.
The Kamleshwar Lake in forest has largest number of Marsh crocodiles in India. Snakes like
Russell or Saw-scaled Viper, Krait or Python are commonly found in the forest, followed by
Mongoose and the Rate- Honey badger, well known snake killers. The Langurs occupy the top
canopy of the jungle while the Jungle Cats, Leopards, Jackals, Hyenas are some of the
carnivores that prowl the ground in search of prey. With over 300 species of birds, some typical
to Gir Forest, the visitors get the opportunity to see birds like the Crested Serpent Eagle,
Crested Hawk-eagle, Brown Fish Owl, Pygmy Woodpecker, Black-headed Oriole, Rock Bush –
Quail and Indian Pitta.
