History
In 1994 Echo Lucas and Sandy Lackington became concerned that there was a void in
domestic abuse services in Lane County for women who held traditional or Christian
values. They collaborated with Carolyn Rexius LCSW to found an agency that would be
dedicated to advocating for families as they worked through the impact of domestic
violence.
CAFA first offered support groups for women who were dealing with abuse in their
partner relationships. Under the direction of Echo Lucas, those groups continue to meet.
The women in the support groups voiced a need for services for their partners and as a
result CAFA’s batterer intervention program, Outgrowing the need for Power, Anger and
Control, was started. OPAC under the supervision of Carolyn Rexius LCSW is now the
largest program of its kind, in Lane County serving over 225 clients weekly.
Children who had been impacted by trauma were CAFA’s next population of concern.
A group intervention for these children was started. Kids Affected by Trauma (KAT
Club) meets in ten week segments offering services to children between the ages of 4 and
12. A group for parents is offered at the same time.
The vision these three women had to offer services to the community that would be
complimentary to the client’s traditional values has been fulfilled. A parallel mission was
to activate the Christian community to an awareness of the devastating effects of
domestic abuse and motivate them to be a part of the healing ministry of Jesus to these
families. We continue to partner with the local church toward those goals.
Purpose
CAFA is a state certified, non-profit 501© (3) mental health agency offering services
and support to adults, children and families. We have several goals, one is to equip
parents to partner and parent in ways that ensure children’s safety and allow the children
to go about the normal tasks of happily being a child. A second goal is to be a resource
for couples struggling to have safe, fulfilling, enriched relationships. Thirdly, CAFA
therapists work with individuals, both adult and children, to help them find solutions to
their presenting problems. We blend biblical principals with psychological understanding
to serve both the Christian community and the citizens of Lane County. We desire to
serve as a resource to the local church to educate about domestic violence and other
mental health issues and to train the church in safe and helpful interventions. We wish to
share our knowledge, skills and understanding with the church as well as the larger
community and to be available to serve as a bridge between the two.
Mission
CAFA is a group of concerned Christians who have joined together to serve children,
adults and families. Our goal is to help them live in a harmonious manner. We see our
work as a God-reliant ministry for the purpose of reconciling people to themselves, to
one another and to God,

2. Population Served
CAFA is a resource for a wide range of people. Children, teens, adults and families
experiencing difficulties common to everyone, as well as those who have had a serious
crisis will find our services helpful. CAFA offers individual therapy, play therapy for
children, couples therapy and family therapy. We also offer parenting classes. We have
services for people who have been mandated by the Court due to domestic violence and
we have services for the partners of people who have been mandated. CAFA also offers
nuerofeedback for clients struggling with forms of anxiety.
Supervised Visitation
CAFA offers supervised visitation for clients who have been mandated for that service
due to domestic violence.
KAT Club
CAFA’s group for children who have been affected by trauma meets weekly for eight
sessions. We use play therapy interventions to deal with the children’s presenting
problems.
Nuerofeedback
This is an intervention for people struggling with anxiety.
