This document discusses masquerade syndromes in allergic diseases. It describes how primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) can often present with symptoms that mimic common allergic conditions like eczema. Two examples of PIDs that frequently masquerade as allergies are discussed in detail - Omenn syndrome, a rare form of severe combined immunodeficiency that typically appears in infancy as erythroderma and diarrhea; and IPEX syndrome, an X-linked condition causing diarrhea, polyendocrinopathy, and fatal infections in male infants. The document emphasizes that a PID should be considered for patients with allergic-like symptoms that are treatment-resistant or associated with unusual clinical features.
1) A retrospective analysis of 356 adult patients with chronic urticaria/angioedema (CUA) from 2001-2009 found that routine laboratory testing rarely led to changes in management or improved outcomes. Only 1 patient benefited from a subsequent change.
2) Propranolol treatment for 3 months significantly improved symptoms in 5 out of 6 patients with idiopathic aquagenic pruritus, suggesting involvement of the sympathetic system.
3) A history of hives, shorter duration of urticaria, and a positive chronic urticaria index predicted a favorable response to cyclosporine treatment in 68 adults with chronic urticaria.
This document summarizes a webinar about cool career tools and resources presented by Tanya White-Earnest.
