- Good evening everyone. My name is Mike Halliday and I wanted to share with you a little about our journey with Automic and how it has helped the Lion business.
- For those of you who don’t know us, we’re one of Australasia’s largest food and beverage companies, with over 6,000 people mostly in Australia and New Zealand. We have some Iconic brands across dairy, juice and alcoholic beverages. I’m sure you all are familiar with a sample of several of our products.
- So I was thinking about automation, why is it important I was reminded of an older XKCD comic. Now this is a particularly nerdy comic and will hopefully make me look a little cooler to 1 or 2 of you and a whole lot less cool to the rest of you. Anyway, this one is incredibly practical and was actually pinned at my desk for a while. We have how often do you do the task, against how much time you save by automating it. Where they meet show you how much time you can invest in making it more efficient to break even. So if you have something that happens daily and can save 5 mins, then over 5 years you can save 6 days by automating it! I love the simplicity of this diagram. This is why we automate To save time.
- So back to Lion. Lion has traditionally had a “Best of Breed” approach to systems. Now I wont discuss the pros and cons of different strategies here, but this is small piece of our landscape today. We’ve needed applications that can help hold these together and among these has been Automic workload automation or UC4 as it was then. We first installed UC4 in Dec 2000 on v 2.63 (last weekend upgrade to v12) so we’ve been on this journey for a long time. We are small… by Automic standards, very small ~6000 executable objects 600 000 executions / week Critical to our ordering supply chain invoicing Finance BI reporting along with a range of other tactical solutions We are now in the middle of a Business transformation project which will see SAP as our preferred platform and a reduction in the complexity
- Love? Well we’ve had a good relationship and I can’t say that about all the apps I’ve worked with. What the best thing about having Automic all these years? Versatile and powerful. For something a simple as running a task you’d be amazed how many options are required. I honestly can’t think of a request that we couldn’t find a way to meet the need. Low admin. We have only ever had part of a resource dedicated to administering the product <20% (remember we’re a small installation) Our product SME’s develop their own jobs and process flows. The flip side of the system being so reliable is we haven’t invested as much as we could have. Automic is never on our services forum reports or triggering major incidents But we could be doing more with it. Self Documenting – We’re not the best at updating documents. With Automic, all our processes are captured in a graphical format, if we change something it’s there for all to see. There is no need to update a separate document. Dependable: IT JUST WORKS… and has done for years. I know there are processes running right now. If there we have a failure in those processes, remediation actions kick in. be it restarting the task or rolling back or skipping until the next day alerting the on-call SME - and escalating if they don’t respond
- Challenges We have had some challenges so I’ll quickly share the key learnings and pitfalls to avoid. Governance, it’s an ugly word I know. early investment in proper practices and naming conventions etc. Think of audits, permissions, reporting etc we had some loose guides but as the team has grown and staff turnover etc, Need good rigour. There are multiple pathways to a solution so make sure you standardise. It’s worth the effort. I’m sure the team from Automic are here to help!
- Well the future is cloud. We’re now in the middle of a Business Transformation Project. At it’s centre is SAP S/4 Hana and more focus on the private and public cloud offerings with more and more PAAS, SAAS and IAAS solutions Critical to the success of this will be automation, and Automic has us covered into the future. I look forward to expanding on the features we haven’t utilised to date, especially Cloud Automation API Automation Enhanced Analytics Zero downtime upgrades Improved releases and service orchestration It’s an exciting future
- If I look back at my chart on time saving, I feel there is something missing. 1. Peace of mind. I’m not worried about our processes running, Automic has my back. I don’t have issues. 2. Once you’ve automate a process, you can do it more often, what we used to do monthly can now do weekly, weekly daily etc enhance your agility by saving you time Because at its core, Automic is about saving time. And when all is said and done… If you’re not automating, you’re wasting your time. Thank you for yours.
