Sparta emerged as a political entity in ancient Greece around the 10th century BC when invading Dorians subjugated the local population. It was situated on the banks of the Eurotas River in Laconia in southeastern Peloponnese. Sparta rose to become the dominant military land power in ancient Greece from around 650 BC. The majority of modern Sparta's population still lives in the town, which is famous for its olive trees and citrus processing, located on the site of Ancient Sparta as designated by King Otto in 1834.
