1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This is a report made for our FNBE Semester 2 Business final project, in
which we, the students have to run a charity drive by setting up a small
business. We were required to form a small group and decide on the
products we would like to sell in the charity drive. The profit made in this
activity must be fully donated to the represented charity organisation
chosen by the students themselves,

The products that the students sold can range from food & beverage to
accessories. However, due to low complexity in selling food, our group
decided to go on the pathway of F&B business, in which we will sell curry
fish balls and egg tarts. Based on our research, we found that curry fish
balls and egg tarts are the best selling street food in Hong Kong.

But, in order to involve in F&B business, we, students have to first take a
typhoid vaccine injection to prevent disease spreading among the edibles.
Also, we were suggested by our lecturer, Mr Joe to sell our product at at
least triple its original price to ease our process. Other than that, we were
free to do any stuff, including selling different things in case the original
product failed to deliver sufficient amount of profit.

For this report, we have to provide suitable explanation to justify each and
every decisions we made. We were also required to provide a detailed
calculation of our cost, profit, loss and present our receipts/records book to
proof the calculation. Besides that, we were asked to includes multiple
analysis, such as target markets, competitions and also strategies we used
to boost our business profit. Failure to provide all these information may
result in a loss of mark.

2. OBJECTIVES

In this project, we were required to set up our own mini business in the
campus to raise a set target amount of profit (RM2500) and donate them to
our chosen charity organisation. The charity organisation we decided to
choose is TiRatana, a wellknown nonprofit organisation focusing on
providing house to the orphans and the oldfolks. The reason we chose
TiRatana is because one of our group member, Vincent and his family
often visit the organisation, therefore he is quite familiar with that place.

After some comprehensive discussions and also guidance of our lecturer,
we decided to sell our fishballs at RM3 per stick, with each stick having
three large fish balls. We also created a weird, yet catchy name alongside
with a gagworthy logo which is located on our poster in order to catch
passersby attention.

Furthermore, we set our daily sales amount goal where we have to sell 500
fishballs each day to reach our target on time.

3. Target Market
3.1 Customers Background

For this charity drive, we targeted students in Taylor’s as our potential
customers as students always pass by Student Life Center (SLC) in our
uni. Most of the students are having their lunch time and dinner in the
campus so we focus the students as our main customers. Moreover, our
products are cheap and can be consumed below RM10. This is one of the
best choice for the student who don’t want to spend more than RM10 for a
meal.

Lectures and the visitors of Taylor’s University are also our secondary
customers. Obviously, we targeted all the people passed by as our
customers. Since our booth has a good geography strategic, there is a lot
of people passed by. Our products are easy to take away and it’s
convenient to consume so this will be our advantage to attract the
customer.

Also , before the booth near the Student Life Centre is open, sales
are targeted towards friends and relatives. People who know us personally
tend to trust us more and support our charity event.

3.2 Customer Needs

● Easy to get
Fish Balls and egg tarts can be ordered in a high quantity at a much
lower price

● Easy to prepare
Curry fish balls’ recipe is particularly simple for what they taste.

● Cheap and tasty
Sell in a very cheap price and it can make customers full. It is
the best choice for the curry lover to have this for their meal.

● Easy to Consume
Our products are easy to consume. We packaged our products by
using plastic bag and our products can be consumed on the go.

3.3 Spending Power
● Curry Fish Balls
We sold it in a low price, which is RM 3 to get a stick of curry
fishballs. Each stick consists of 3 fish balls. Besides that, extra curry
is provided. We also discounted our price from RM3 to RM2  due to
low amount of sales. However, after discounting, our sales got
significantly boosted.

● Egg Tarts
For egg tart, we also sold it for RM 3. However, we decreased the
price of egg tarts from RM3 to RM2 after finding out that the egg tarts
are no longer fresh.

4. Competition Analysis
Chia Ting’s Group

This group was selling variety of junk food and snacks. Their booth was
located beside the Student Life Centre

Advantages:
Their strategic selling product is snacks and cold drinks which can attract
many people to buy their product. Also , they used gaming tactics to sell
their snacks. For example, “One hand grab in snacks” which can attract
many customer to play this game and grab some snacks back home.
Weaknesses:
Children snacks and drinks not really attract customer in university. They do
not promote their
products well and even the cold drinks is too expensive to the publics.
8
As both our teams sell different products, we decided to not amend the
price of curry fish balls. Our team members were more proactive in the
strategy of attracting customers. Instead of sitting at the booth, we walked
towards them to promote our foods, diverting their attention to our products.

Zer Kai’s Group
This group is selling unique icecream which located at the first booth of our
row.

9

Advantages:
Their strategic location near the administration office and commercial block
allows them to approach potential customers first. Their group would be the
first sellers to persuade customers to buy their products or at least collect
some donations. It was also found that their product is attract many
taylorian to buy it.For example, the special smoky vanilla ice cream added
some cereals with beautiful ice cream cup.

Weaknesses:
They do not have a variety of products to be sold (only icecream). They
did not provide enough stock every time. Also, their progress of making ice
cream are slow.

5. PRODUCT AND PACKAGING
After surveying the market, we have decided on selling foods instead of
goods and services. The reason behind this is that food products will attract
repeated customers as it is a need. In this charity event, we have decided
on selling two products, that is curry fish ball and egg tart. Our idea of
products would be more on ‘grab and go’. This is also one of the reason for
us to sell street foods as the product is all prepacked. Customers would be
able to taste their food straight away after the payment has been made.

1. Curry Fishballs

The fishballs we used in this business are from local fish balls. To make the
curry taste good, we added right amount of coconut milk powder and curry
powder. Also to enhance the taste, we added lots of chilli powder into the
curry. We enhance the taste of the curry fish balls by boiling and soaking
them in the curry. The fishballs sell the best as curry fish balls aren’t sold in
the campus. The curry was heated throughout the business to maintain the
heat of the sauce. This attracted the customers as it seems to be fresh.
The packaging of the curry fishballs is simple, the fishballs were skewered
in a row of 3 and is served in a plastic bag.
11

 2. Egg Tarts

We got our egg tarts from a bakery shop which is famous for its egg tarts
nearby Pe Zhi Yong’s house. Everyday, Zhi Yong would get his supply of
fresh egg tarts from the bakery shop and bring it to university. We kept our
egg tarts in a airtight container to keep them fresh.

6. PRICING

Cost Price    : (i) Curry Fish balls  RM0.69  (per stick)
(ii) Egg Tart  RM 1.40 (per unit)
Selling Price: (i) Curry Fish Balls  RM 2.00 (per stick)
(ii) Egg Tart  RM 3.00 (per unit)
The selling price is 2.9 times the cost price if the curry fish balls are sold in
stick and 2.14 times the cost price if the egg tarts are sold in unit
guaranteeing good profit when sold.

Many customers find the gigantic fish balls and fresh oven egg tarts in low
price . This makes the price of RM 2 and RM 3 reasonable. Also,
customers were highly likely to buy our foods when they know all profit is
given to charity.

The price of one stick of curry fish balls and egg tart is set at RM 2 and RM
3 as no change is required in most money transaction processes between
the buyer and seller. This makes the process of selling and receiving
money smoother.

If there are difficulties selling the food, the food will be lower price of the
food so that customers are more willing to buy them. If the food are sold
faster than expected, the price will not be affected.

7. PROMOTION

     Social Network
An Instagram page was created to show all the street foods of hong kong
that we sold to the public before the charity drive. It can attract many
customers to buy our product or if even they would like to place a preorder
to us first.

FacetoFace Conversation
This is the best method of promotion. We explain to our customer took our
foods around the campus and face to face explain to them about our
charity information and our products
14

Poster
An A3 poster was designed using Adobe Photoshop and printed. This is to
allow passerbys to have a quick glance of what we were selling and
hoping that they would stop just to have enough time for us to approach
them. An additional poster with the words “Ti  Ratana Welfare Society”
was placed at the booth. This message attracted many people to approach
us.

15
8. SPONSORS AND DONATIONS

In order to reduce our workload, we are allowed to look for sponsorships
and donation to provide us some products and money. We approached
many strangers and also multiple outlets in Sunway Pyramid and asked for
donation.Besides that, we also walked along the shophouses beside the
malls in order to get more donations from the people there. We were quite
impressed by their kind heart as we didn’t aspect to get that much
donations from them. Aside from that, we also get sponsorships from our
relatives in order for us to buy the materials and ingredients needed for this
assignment. In the end, we got a total of approximately RM 448 from the
donations and RM 558 in term of sponsorships.

10. Green Measures

Having decided to sell food and beverages, we took many matters into
concern regarding the environment. Therefore we tried our best carrying
out our assignment approaching the main objective, which is to protect and
improve the surrounding environment through some effective steps.

Throughout this assignment, we managed to reduce carbon footprint by
buying the fishballs and ingredients in one shot. Other than that, our
ingredients were all stored at one place, that is Ignatius’ house. The
ingredients were transported from his house to campus every morning.

Besides that, we planned ahead before we buy our ingredients and
materials so that we don’t cause any waste. Besides, even there’s left over
in the end of the day, we finished the curry fishballs and treated it as our
dinner.

Furthermore, we tried to reduce the usage of tissue papers by bring our
wiping cloths to clean our table daily. We also used disposable glove
instead of normal plastic glove that cannot be disposed naturally.

Finally, we brought a huge black plastic to clean up all the rubbish after we
are done with the business. We shared the black plastic bag with every
team in order to reduce the amount of plastic bag used.

In this charity drive, we earned a total of RM 1600 for Ti  Ratana and
successfully exceeded the target of RM 1600 net profit. The pie chart
above shows that most of our profit comes from sales.

We had a good financial record throughout the whole charity drive. Thus,
there were no issues on financial terms. The choice of selling Hong Kong
street food is good. The cost of each stick and unit is RM 0.69 and RM 1.40
while the selling price is RM 2 and RM 3. The high selling price to cost ratio
made our products profitable. As the sales of foods not really good and we
did need to rely more on donation and sponsorship.

However, there are still many spaces for improvement. Firstly, we learnt
that we should take more second plan before proceeding on a decision. We
only found that many students finds our foods are not convenient for them
to take away. Many customers would prefer a nice packaging instead.
Thus, we should research and survey before finalizing the product design.
Our team should not had made the decisions hastily.

As a conclusion, our team’s charity drive is a success as we hit the RM
1600 target within the designated amount of time.
