ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town
3. INDRODUCTION
In this project . I will have to pretend that I am the mayor of “X” town. The citizen in “X”
town require a new town because of reason that it no longer liveable. As a mayor, I will
need to propose a new layout for the new “X” town very rapidly.
The new proposed city will be small with an area of 30 KM2 with a population in
between 150,000 – 300,000.The town will be planned by a group of Malaysians and the
town is located in Malaysia. During the town planning, there's a lot to be considered
including the structure and zoning of the town. The planning should be include sustainable
living initiatives too.
I was required to make some research on ancient, present and future towns before the
planning of the “X” Town. The to make reason being it in order to understand the
elements and components of a city in the past and in the present. Furthermore,
researches on future towns can bring in new ideas, technologies and new innovation o the
new town
Through this project , I’m going..

4. A TOWN
• Definition
An urban area that has a name, defined boundaries, and local government, and that is
generally larger than a village and smaller than a city. Towns often exist as municipal
cooperation and government unit, with legally defined borders and a mayor may be the
chief executive officer of the municipal government
What is the brief history?
A town is a overgrown village that have it’s own economy. So most of the town might be
located on a bend in a navigable river or beside a crossing river
What makes a town?
A town is made up of a certain numbers of population, government area, commercial
area, educational area, industrial area and so on that ruled by law equipped by facilities ,
transportation and parts. Most of a town's population will tend to derive their living from
manufacturing industry, commerce and public service.
What makes a good town/ township?
• Practicing 3R
• Low crime rate
• Free trade zone
• Less dependency on fossil fuel
• Use renewable energy wisely – to reduce the level of pollution
• Less carbon emission
• Proper planning of infrastructure and facilities
• Provide smoking area
• More Green spaces
• Organized zoning

• Transparency between municipal and citizen
What is a future town?
A future town is a smart and sustainable town that make our life better than today. The
aims of the future town is to make better use of hard infrastructure, reduce the required
inputs of energy, water and food, and waste output of heat, air pollution like CO2,
methane, and water pollution by providing green spaces ,renewable energy and efficient
energy public transportation to support smart growth.

Ancient Cities /Towns
Rome,Ancient Rome
In 400 BC ,the Romans used a fused scheme for city planning and developed for military
defense and civil convenience. The basic plan consisted of a central forum with public
services, surrounded by a compact straight grid of streets, and surrounded in a wall for
safety. Two diagonal streets crossed the square grid, passing through the central square
to minimize travel times. Furthermore ,A river often flowed through the city or town for
providing water transport and sewage disposal.
The most vivid secular buildings in Ancient Rome are the amphitheatres like the
Colosseum in Rome. The Romans were the first builders that realize the hidden of domes
for the creation of large and well-defined interior spaces.
Domes were shown in a number of Roman building types such as temples, thermae,
palaces, mausoleum and later also churches.
• A Roman villa was a Roman country house which built for the upper class during the
Roman republic and the Roman Empire.

6. • The Romans constructed many aqueducts in order to transfer water from a long distance
into their cities and towns for supplying fountains, public baths, latrines, and private
households.It also provided water for mining operations, milling, farming and planting.
• Multi-story apartment blocks called insulae ingratiate to a new range of residential needs.
The cheapest rooms were at the top because the inability to escape when a fire occurred
and even lack of piped water. Windows were small, facing the street, with iron security
bars. Insulae were dangerous and unhealthy to fires because of overcrowding and
accidental cooking arrangements.
• A forum was a public square in a Roman municipium which reserved mainly for the
vending of goods. For example, a marketplace was formed along with the buildings with
shops and the stoas .

City of London ,United Kingdom
London is the capital city of England and UK.It is the most populous city in UK with a
metropolitan area of over 13 million population Standing on the River Thames, London has
been a main settlement for two million years, its history was going back to its founding by
the Romans, who called as Londinium.
London also has river boat services on the Thames which known as Thames Clippers. These
travel from Embankment Pier to North Greenwich Pier every 20 minutes . The Woolwich
Ferry could carry with 2.5 million passengers every year.
London's bus network is one of the largest bus network in the world which running 24
hours a day, with approximately 8,500 buses, more than 700 bus routes and around 19,500
bus stops.

8. • The largest parks in the central area of London are three of the Royal Parks, which is Hyde
Park and Regent's Park. Regent's Park contains London Zoo and it is near to Madame
Tussauds Wax Museum.
Melbourne, Australia (the world's most livable city since 2011 until today )
Melbourne has the largest tram networks in the world. 182.7 million passenger were
carried by tram in 2 years. Melbourne's is Australia's only tram network to comprise more
than a single line and consists about 250 km (155.3 mi) of track, 487 trams, 28 routes, and
1,773 tram stops. Melbourne's trams are verified as iconic cultural assets and a tourist
attraction.

9. Copenhagen ,Denmark
• Copenhagen is the capital and also the most populated city in Denmark with population
about 2 million.
• The Danish capital also known as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, with
bicycles actually outnumbering its inhabitants . About 36% of all working or studying city-
dwellers travelled to work, school, or university by using bicycle in 2012 . by Copenhagen's
cyclists covered With 1.27 million km every working day. The city's bicycle paths are
extended about 400 km of cycle lanes that not shared with cars or pedestrians.
• Middelgrunden is an offshore wind farm in the Copenhagen, Denmark. In 2000, it was
recognized as the world's largest offshore wind farm, with 20 turbines and 40 MW
capacity of electricity. The farm delivers about 4% of the power for Copenhagen.

The Capital District of Abu Dhabi, UAE
One of the key aspirations of Plan Abu 2030 is achieved through the high-quality
streetscapes, a multiple mixed use neighbourhood and an focal point on a complete public
transport network, which supports the idea that every passenger is a pedestrian.
The Capital District will provide a wide range of housing choice for all income levels. The
residential neighbourhoods are designed to satisfy the various needs and aim of Abu Dhabi's
diverse.
The Central Business District (CBD)are arranged to maximize natural ventilation. A series of
linear open spaces will provide building podiums and shade structures for shading during the
hottest parts of the day.

11. • Sustainable practices towards conservation of energy and water are a key stone of the
Plan. The plan minimize the amount of consumption water and electric through the
application of "green building" practices as defined by the government's Estidama
Program. Recycling centers will be located at the ground floor of public parking facilities
and encourage individuals and households to practice recycle.
An integrated tram network will be provided routes throughout the city.
• Mosques are located nearer to all residential area which means each mosque is within a
maximum 5 minute walk of all residents. The mosques can accommodate about two
hundred.

12. • The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city, China
• Barrier-Free Accessibility - The Eco-city should have 100% barrier-free access.
• Proportion of Affordable Public Housing - At least 20% of housing in the Eco-city will be in
the form of subsidised public housing by 2013.
• Usage of Renewable Energy - Renewable energy should account for at least 15% of the
energy utilized in the Eco-city by 2020. Possible usable sources of renewable energy for
the Eco-city include geothermal energy,, hydroelectric energy and solar energy.
• Usage of Water from Non-Traditional Sources - At least 50% of the Eco-city’s water supply
will be from non-traditional sources such as desalination and recycled water by 2020.
• Jobs to be generated in the Eco-city - Sufficient jobs should be generated for at least 50%
of the Eco-city’s residents within the Eco-city who are employable, to minimize the need
for them to commute on a daily basis from their home to their workplace.
• Ambient Air Quality - The air quality in the Eco-city should meet at least China’s National
Ambient Air Quality Grade II Standard for at least 310 days.
• Quality of Water from Taps - Water from all taps should be potable.
• Carbon Emission Per Unit GDP - The carbon emission per unit GDP in the Eco-city should
not exceed 150 tonne-C per US$1 million.

13. • Proportion of Green Buildings - All buildings in the Eco-city should meet green building
standards.
• Green Transportation – In year 2020,at least 90% of trips within the Eco-city should be in
the form of green trips which refer to comprehensive green transport network like
driverless EN-V cars, cycling and walking.

14. The New City/The New Name?
Reports on the world coming to an end are bringing the world towards the country’s it
might be the last piece of living land on earth that not polluter or destroyed by natural
disaster or human-made .Within weeks, the country’s population had increased greatly.
The huge amounts of immigrants have divested the privileges of the Malaysians that
previously lived peacefully. Green spaces and forests are destroyed to build new building for
extra load of inhabitants causing the air condition to worsen, making it hard to breathe and
cause disease and sickness.
Furthermore ,a mayor (me) took up the responsibility to bring back the good life of
Malaysians once had by building a new town with the financial aid from the residents-to-be.
As a river is essential to life and is the beginning to all human civilization, the town is
proposed to be built with a river flowing through. The town will be covered by an abundance
of green spaces and forest reserve areas for citizens to mingle around.
As the mayor of Infinity City, several sustainable elements will be taken into account in
planning the new town such as using green public transport ,practicing 3R lifestyle and also
growing crops with organic method to build a ECO- city.

15. Element in The Infinity City
• Downtown Planning
• The downtown of the city will be located beside the river which is business areas .To
prevent any traffic jams or air pollution, the downtown is recognized as Free Automotive
Vehicles Zone which means vehicles are not allowed to move in this area. As conclusion,
the citizen have to taking trams, scooters, bicycles, water taxi or PRT to downtown. In the
central of the downtown will be a big open spaces or green spaces to reduce the
temperature and pollution in the downtown
• Mixed-Use Neighbourhoods
By interweaving ,commercial, residential and facilities in the same neighbourhood .Citizen
will Reduce the dependence on automotive transport as the destination facilities always
close enough to walk .
• Open Space and Green Places
Green spaces can be found beside every areas to reduce the heat and air pollution. Green
spaces mostly used as community area for citizen mingle around
• Retail Environments
Surrounded residential areas or recreational areas for convenient citizen to buy daily items.
Without dependence on automotive transport
• Transit Oriented Design
• Public transports can be found in everywhere, such as tram, shared bicycle, shared
scooters, shared electric cars, electric public bus and even PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) to
convenient and comfort all citizens to visit their destination in a short time.
• Waterfront Revitalization
• Waterfront is the best place for more denser development. For example, waterfront can
be built with mixed-use building that consist residential, commercial, offices ,jetty and
even green spaces like cycle lanes and green plantation.
• Renewable Energy
• To generate enough amount of consumptions electricity for the,the town will provided
electricity with renewable energy
• Bicycle friendly Town
• Multi-storey bicycle parking station can be found in business district for working cyclist.
Bicycle lanes are mostly paved in the green spaces and recreational areas.

Overall plan of The Infinity City
18. • The residential area of Infinity city is located at northern , north-western, eastern and
southern parts of the town taking up 15% of the town with different type of housing choice
, such as villas,mid-rise building, townhouses and high-rise building. Public services
such as Hospitals,Police Sation and fire brigades are located surround all residential areas for
a quick respond for rescue when emergency arises.
• Besides that, The green areas and recreational areas(coloured with green and spotty green)
are located near the residential areas ,commercial areas and even business areas for the
publics to enjoy the facilities that prepared .As for the green spaces located at north and
south parts, it is to reduce the amount of pollution from the industrial areas for a healthier
living .
• Furthermore, Schools or Universities are located beside the recreational areas that provided
trams for those residents who live at the residential area that surround the recreational
area

20. • In order to supply enough electricity power to the town itself,the town has it own
hydroelectric power station, windmill at the central garden(the artificial island in the
middle of the river) and even all buildings of the town will provided solar panels.
• Furthermore , most infrastructures like lamp post, trams, PRT, garden light, electric car
charging station , automatic garden watering systems and so on will set up solar panels to
reduce the amount of consumption electricity.

22. • Industrial Area is located at North entrance and South entrance
• Agriculture in this town mostly are planted by using hydroponic method and rainwater
harvesting system, which means most agriculture are organic and working at Central
Garden, top floor of residential and business buildings and Even Reserve Forest Area .
• Crops from those areas will be transported to industrial areas for processing. Otherwise,
Agriculture can straight sell those vegetation or crops at residential areas and commercial
areas freshly without any chemical processing.

24. Conclusion
• The design process of a new town is not as easy as it seems. From
the structure of the structure of the town to the town planning
strategies and features to make it green and sustainable. Every
slightest details needs to be taken into account to create an
organized town
• The idea generation of the town structure started hard as they are
difficult to fulfil other aspects as zoning of the needs to be
considered. In the end ,I have changed the structure of my structure
of my future town about 3 times!
• Through all the research about the cities above, I learned that
privileges of citizen is placed before everything. Furthermore, to a
perfect green own planning must be taken into account. I have
learned more about the sustainability of a green town in the future.
• This project is a challenging experience for me to experience the
vision of work as a city planner and how they planning a
sustainability of a town can create a better living for the days has to
come.
