Open APIs: A Telco's Perspective

A
aubsTelcos are traditionally closed but must open APIs to adapt to changing customer expectations and new competitive threats. They have many potential APIs around communications, networks, and user data that could be offered. Current models include wholesaling APIs to aggregators or directly to developers. While opening APIs could diversify revenue and allow telcos to focus on core strengths, there are also risks around revenue declines and commoditization that must be addressed. Developer programs are starting to resemble those of internet companies but telcos still have questions around APIs and their business models.

Service Delivery Innovation Summit 2014 Summary
Review of the highlights from the Service Delivery Innovation Summit held 16-17 September in London. I review some of the presentations with my comments on the key points they raise for the industry.

Open Source Telecom Software Landscape by Alan Quayle
There are tens of successful Open Source Telecom Software projects, with vibrant communities supporting them. Asterisk, the most successful and longest running is 20 years old. We heard from them earlier in the agenda.
We’ll review the many other projects to help people understand the depth, breadth and rapidly evolving nature of these projects. As we’ll as some of the new projects like Drachtio.org, and used recently at TADHack-mini Orlando Online 2020, for the hack SMB Reschedule.
We’ll also review the results from an anonymous survey of open source telecom software. Comparing the different projects, the preferred application areas of the projects, common issues and solutions, sharing where the industry sees these projects in 5 years’ time.

We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management.
