Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel after Hamilton's insults caused Burr to lose the presidential election to Morgan Lewis, and at the duel on July 11, 1804 Burr fatally shot Hamilton, who had refused to fire back, despite their long-standing political differences; though Burr was later tried for treason for other actions, he was found innocent and fled to Britain.

2. Burr Background Burr ran for President as an independent after Jefferson kicked him off of his team. Hamilton campaigned heavily against Burr which caused him to lose to Morgan Lewis. After Hamilton voiced a slur upon Burr with no apology, Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel.
