Microsoft reported a 51% increase in net income for its first quarter compared to the same period last year, boosted by higher sales of Windows and Office software to businesses. Revenue was also up 25% to $16.2 billion. Microsoft also announced plans to acquire 3D chipmaker Canesta Inc. to support its Kinect motion sensor add-on for the Xbox 360, which allows players to control games with body movements. Tata Indicom launched the Blackberry Bold 9650, the first CDMA-GSM smartphone for its customers, offering it with special data packages for the first two months. The Indian government also announced that Blackberry would provide a "final solution" for lawful interception of its BBM messaging

While LTE and LTE-Advanced deployments are still underway, mobile operators and vendors have already embarked on R&D initiatives to develop so-called “5G” technology, with a vision of commercialization by 2020. 5G is essentially a revolutionary paradigm shift in wireless networking to support the throughput, latency and scalability requirements of future use cases such as extreme bandwidth augmented reality applications and connectivity management for Billions of M2M (Machine to Machine) devices.
Although 5G is yet to be standardized, vendors are aggressively investing in 5G development efforts with a principal focus on new air interface transmission schemes, higher frequency bands and advanced antenna technologies such as Massive MIMO and beamforming. With large scale commercial deployments expected to begin in 2020, we estimate that 5G networks will generate nearly $250 Billion in annual service revenue by 2025.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
2. Microsoft Q1 net income rises
51%
Microsoft Corp. said that its net income in the latest
quarter rose 51 percent, boosted by higher sales of
Windows and Office software to businesses.
In last year's quarter, Microsoft deferred some
revenue from Windows sales. Had it not done so, net
income would have been only 16 percent higher this
year in comparison.
For the fiscal first quarter, which ended in September,
net income rose to $5.4 billion, or 62 cents per share,
from $3.6 million, or 40 cents per share, in the same
period last year.
Revenue increased 25 percent to $16.2 billion, from
$12.9 billion a year ago.
3. Microsoft to acquire 3-D chipmaker, price
unknown
Canesta Inc.which makes 3-D imaging chips , has agreed to
be bought by Microsoft Corp. for an undisclosed amount.
Microsoft is set to start selling Kinect, an add-on for Xbox
360 that can interpret players' body movements, using them
to control what happens in the game.
Kinect will allow people to play video games without having
to mash buttons on a plastic controller.
Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft worked with another
3-D sensor company, PrimeSense, in building Kinect. It had
also acquired 3DV, a PrimeSense competitor, but did not end
up using its technology.

Jan-end
NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday said that BlackBerry
messenger (BBM) services will continue to be available to
customers in India after handset maker Research In Motion

interception of BBM services and also assured the
government that they will provide the final solution for the
lawful interception of BBM services by January 31, 2011,”
the home ministry said in a statement.
