THE GOOD LIFE
FROM THE SOCIAL DIRECTOR
Suzanne Friedman
May is here and flowers are blooming, although,
aren't flowers always blooming at Buena Vida! Life
is good! Mother’s Day is May 10, there will be
birthdays to celebrate, weddings and graduations
to attend, but let’s not forget there will be plenty
to do here at Buena Vida in May. Join us for a
Cinco de Mayo happy hour in the screened patio.
There’ll be mariachi music and salsa along with
some Mexican munchie’s and perhaps some
home made Sangria to share. Bonus trivia points
for who knows the other occasion besides V-Day
Le Huit Mai is celebrated?
Memorial Day will bring the annual Buena Vida
BBQ. Remember those delicious succulent ribs
from P. A. Grill. They were so good, we brought
‘em back for July fourth last year. They’ll be here
this year again for Memorial Day along with SL
Productions DJ entertaining us with some hip
rock and roll music. Now, we don’t want to get
bored with a good thing, so this July fourth we are
planning something very different, however, at
the press time, details have not been
finalized, so its still a top secret that I am sure will
please!
Not to rush through the rest of the summer and
fall, but the descriptions of each act for the 2015-
2016 show series is on page 21. And, HAS the
social committee picked some great shows for the
residents of Buena Vida and their friends to enjoy
next winter! I still giggle when I think of Scott
Record doing his impersonation of Dr. Phil. If you
enjoy Broadway musicals, Marilyn Sanchez is not
to be missed. Anyone from the tri-state area will
appreciate NJ’s bad boy Mike Marino’s jokes. It is
not often I am impressed by a musician, I consid-
er myself basically tone deaf or, at best , musical-
ly illiterate. But There was something very special
about Marcus Terell. He does Motown classics
with such energy and finesses. I look forward to
seeing him after he really makes it big and saying
I booked him at Buena Vida when he was a not
well known. What can one say about the Beatle
Maniacs. This show is what the Beatles would
be like if they were performing today with all the
effects that modern technology can provide on
sound and lighting. 2015-2016 BV Show Series
Sneak Previews will be coming to the clubhouse
near you very soon.
Have a great summer everyone. If traveling stay
safe and send us a picture or two from wherever
you may be.
See you round the club house.

Please note, if there is any balance remaining from
the original $400.00 loaded onto your cafe cards
last July 1, 2014 it will NOT carry over past June 30,
2015.
Some residents have attempted to order take-out
food from the cafe in bulk quantities. Their orders
were rejected because food in bulk quantities is not
a menu item and it is not available from the fresh
food on hand. Management was requested to work
out arrangements, so the cafe will accept orders for
bulk order purchases.
The result of our meeting with Buena Vida's Cafe
food service provider is he has indicated a desire to
accommodate his customers and he has agreed to
satisfy bulk orders for take-out.
However, all interested residents must appreciate
that because the cafe strives to minimize waste by
not maintaining an inventory in anticipation of
selling food in bulk, therefore, satisfaction of any
bulk order requires your understanding and coop-
eration. Please provide the cafe with reasonable
advance notice prior to June 30th.
For your information and planning, to maintain an
inventory of fresh food, deliveries are received
throughout the week. Deliveries are not received
every day, so satisfaction of a bulk order may re-
quire several days to satisfy.
Please do not discard your café card once you
have used up the balance. The cards will be re-
loaded electronically July 1st .

TEAM MELTING POT SCORES AGAIN!
By Marsha Feldman
April Trivia fielded 6 teams.
Questions ranged from cheesy to orchestral. “According to the 2014 USDA report, which is the most
popular cheese in America?” “Name all three orange properties you can buy in Monopoly?” “How many
points do all snowflakes have?” “What two instruments in an orchestra have the highest pitch?”
Scores going into the Final Question were close, ranging from 49 to 65. 1st and 3rd didn’t wager, 2nd
place wagered an interesting 2 points and the remaining 3 teams each wagered 20. Then came the im-
possible-to-answer final question: “Which movies ended with these lines… “Roads? Where we’re going,
we don’t need roads!” “Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you” “So long…partner” “Kevin,
what did you do to my room?”
Team places remained the same, as no team got all four (or any)
movies correct. Congrats to Team Melting Pot for their move
back into 1st place!
Join the fun, test your knowledge, have some dessert at our next
Trivia Night, May 1.
(Answers: Mozzarella; St. James, Tennessee, NY; 6; Piccolo & Violin) (Final An-
swers: Back to the Future, The Matrix, Toy Story, Home Alone)

is completely refundable if you decide to cancel by
September 10, 2015. You will not lose your travel

The Men’s Club held a very successful Dinner Dance
in the Ballroom on March 28th. It was catered by
Mr. Zhang’s with music by Sasha. If you were una-
ble to attend, you missed a great time. In the late
Fall we will hold our Annual Dinner Dance. Save
the Date, it will be Saturday, November 7th.
This past April 12th, our monthly breakfast meeting
was held with a great turn out of close to 70 mem-
bers in attendance. The next Lunch Bunch Meeting
is Monday May 11th. The Lunch Bunch for June will
be on Tuesday the 9th. The locations will be sent to
the members via email.
We have developed some great committees includ-
ing The Refreshment Committee, The Program
Committee and The Membership Committee.
These gentlemen have been working diligently to
make sure we have some exciting speakers and the
members are well fed. Our membership is growing
as well.
The Program Committee has Deputy Scott Portiz
for the Sunday May 17th Breakfast meeting in the
Ballroom. Deputy Portiz will speak on a number of
topics that should be of interest to all of our Mem-
bers well being in and around The Buena Vida Com-
munity.
As for Refreshments on Father’s Day June 21st, we
will have our traditional Lox, Eggs and Onions
breakfast prepared by Irwin Wolf, along with all of
the usual trimmings. After breakfast we will have
our Annual Trivia Contest. This is always a great
time.
Members will be sent an email for both events so
they can RSVP and allow us to have the proper
amount of food on hand. Please be sure to RSVP
when you receive the emails. As we move further
into the year members will be notified of dates and
speakers via both The Buena Vida Newsletter and
emails.

JEWISH HERITAGE CLUB
It is because of Fanny Han-
del that the Buena Vida Jew-
ish Heritage Club exists.
That is why our March 18th
meeting began with a spe-
cial memorial tribute to
Fanny Lipchik Handel who
passed away in December of
2014.
Fanny was born in Uruguay
where she met and married Max. Fanny was an ex-
tremely accomplished woman, fluent in many lan-
guages, earning a law degree and a masters degree in
education while raising her children.
Of all of Fanny’s accomplishments, she was most proud
of her marriage to Max, their children Diego and
Daliah, and her four lovable grandchildren, Jason,
Danielle, Lara and Jacob.
It was a tribute to a life well lived!
The second part of the meeting was the conclusion of
the docudrama about the Thomashefskys, founders of
the Yiddish Theater in America, and grandparents to
conductor Michael Tilson Thomas who hosted the per-
formance.
The presentation was a loving and entertaining multi-
media tribute to a couple of theater legends, Boris and
Bessie Thomashefsky.

THE GOOD LIFE
As the temperatures rise into the 90 degree range
and the humidity remains high, we know the sum-
mer season is fast approaching. With that comes
the departure of some of our members. We wish
them a safe journey in their travels.
The potluck dinner was well attended and we en-
joyed the many tasty dishes prepared by the mem-
bers. Jane Clancy engaged our help in the decora-
tion of the “Goody Bags” which were then filled
with healthy snacks, pencils and erasers and moti-
vational stickers. The photographs help you envi-
sion the number of bags prepared and the supplies
needed to fill them. These bags were delivered by
Jean Clancy and Carole Wharton to Elbridge Gale
Elementary School in Wellington as the students
prepare for the District Testing. The 5th grade
teachers were delighted to receive the 200 bags as
they give encouragement to the children taking
these tests.
Our dine outs will continue throughout the sum-
mer. The members’ luncheon will be noon on the
first Thursday of the month in the Buena Vida Cafe.
Put May 7th and June 4th on your calendars. The
men’s group, who meet the second Tuesday of the
month, will gather on May 12th at First Watch. The
Ladies Outing will vary between event (lunch or
dinner) and date. Because all the dine outs have
been well received, we are considering members’
dine outs at restaurants in the area. Please watch
for e-blasts and information on Channel 63 for all
our activities.

NEWYORKERSFINDFOUNTAINOFYOUTHWITH
STICKBALLLEAGUEINSOUTHFLORIDA
BY MIKE LUPICA NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Sunday, March 22, 2015, 1:02 AM
WELLINGTON, Fla. — In the high heat of the late
morning, on the first official day of spring in Wel-
lington Village Park, the basketball courts at the
park have once again become the streets of New
York City in baseball summers out of the city’s past.
Old men play stickball here with bats they have
purchased or even made themselves after a trip to
Office Depot, and Skybounce balls, which serve as
modern Spaldeens, they have found on the Inter-
net. And in the process they are young. They are
blessedly and wonderfully and happily young.
At one end of the basketball courts the Buena Vida
Broncos get ready for a make-up game they will
play against the Valencia Palms Stickmen. If they
win, they get to play a semifinal game in the Palm
Beach County Senior Stickball League later in the
afternoon.
So this corner of Florida, maybe half-an-hour from
the closest spring training ballpark in Jupiter, Fla.,
is once again transformed on this day into E. 37th
and Church Ave., where 72-year-old Noel Levin,
who serves as player/manager of the Broncos,
played his stickball as a kid. It is Parkchester in the
Bronx, where Vinny Marino played as boy. It is the
streets near DeWitt Clinton High School, where
Harlan Beispeil, 69, tried to hit Spaldeens out of
sight once, before he tried to hit them all the way to
Pierson Road in Wellington.
“We come here,” Harlan Beispiel says, “and we get
to turn back the clock for an hour.”
I ask Noel Levin what happens if the Broncos lose
to the Stickmen. “We go and have lunch,” he says.
Marty Messinger, who is 71 and will get a very big
hit in an hour or so for the Broncos, grew up in
East Flatbush. He says he moved down to this part
of Florida, to Valencia Reserve, just a year ago, af-
ter spending much of his adult life living in Califor-
nia. A cousin started one of the stickball leagues in
Palm Beach County, and before long he was playing
stickball again for the first time in 57 years.
“I show up here for the league games on Friday
morning or the pick-up games we have on Tues-
days and Thursdays,” Marty Messinger says, “and I
feel like I’m a kid again, trying to hit one three sew-
ers.”
There are seven teams in this league. Next Friday,
they will not only have their championship game,
but their All-Star Game as well. They are all here to
win, these men in their late 50s and 60s and 70s
and 80s, don’t worry about that. But they are also
here to talk about the times when Willie Mays
would play stickball on the streets of the city — “A
three-sewer hitter if there ever was one,” Noel Lev-
in says — and when stickball was their national
pastime on a summer day.
Mostly they are here to laugh and talk about the
old days and try to hit the ball being bounced to
them as cleanly as they did when they were boys,
and the Spaldeens were bigger than these Sky-
bounce balls. Noel Levin tells you that even after he
left Brooklyn, he played stickball in Little Neck, in
Queens. cont’d on page 12

stickball there,”
he says.
He is asked if he

days and he
smiles and says,
“Now I don’t
have to.”
You ask them
about the bats,
and they talk
about how you
used to be able
to buy them on
this website or
that, but how
much fun it is to
go to Home Depot and find the right wood and
shellac it and then put on the kind of good rubber
grip they wished they had in those long-ago sum-
mers on E. 37th in Brooklyn, and Church, and over
on Snyder; at DeWitt Clinton and in Little Neck and
Parkchester, and all over New York City, whether
you were standing in front of a chalk strike zone
drawn into a wall, or trying to be a two- or three-
sewer guy yourself.
They have come from all those neighborhoods of
the city and lived their lives and now ended up
here, at Village Park, once known as Pierson Park,
to laugh and groan about aches and pains, and
even being happy to be as close to a restroom as
they are, and celebrate a New York that existed on-
ly in memory until they found this league, and each
other.
The boys of Village Park are asked who the Babe
Ruth of their league is, and almost unanimously
they all tell you Bob Chille, who they joke is one of
the kids of this league, at the age of 65. I ask who
the older players are in the league and Harlan
Beispeil says, “How old is Freddy Schloss, 84?”
Noel Levin says. “Hey, Lonnie Weitzner’s gonna be
85.”
Chille is asked where he is from and he says
Brooklyn. I ask him where in Brooklyn and he
doesn’t give you an avenue or a cross street, he
just smiles at you and says, “PS 199.”
He’s asked if he’s got the power everybody else
says he does and smiles again and says, “I can still
give it a ride.”
They all walk you
out and show you
the pitcher’s mound,
show you the lines
for a single and a
double and where
the cone will be for
triples once the
game starts. In the
distance is the wire
home-run fence. The
distance between
home plate and that
fence does seem to

BOBBY WANZER, ALL-EVERYTHING
By Lloyd Reife
When I brought Bobby Wanzer to the Buena Vida Cafe
one Friday morning not too long ago for breakfast, I
mentioned it beforehand to one resident who shared
some friends with Bobby in Rochester.
Jerry Freedman and Bobby caught up on some
old times from that area.
Before long when word got out he was having breakfast
here, there were at least a dozen people at our ta-
ble. Others who found out, stopped by to shake his
hand.
Who is Bobby Wanzer? He was a kid from Manhattan
who attended Benjamin Franklin High School where he
made his mark as a star player.
He then went on to become All-America at Seton
Hall interrupted by a stint in the Marine Corps where he
was inducted into the Armed Forces Basketball Hall of
Fame while serving his country.
Bobby was a first round draft choice by the Rochester
Royals where he became a perennial All-Star, and even-
tually a player-coach of the team. He also led the league
one season with a 90% mark at the free throw line.
People are always impressed with the sharp mind and
wit of this 94 year old who is the oldest living member of
the NBA Hall of Fame. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver
was asked to do something to honor this special person.
I'm proud to call him my friend.

MUSINGS FROM THE BALD WIMP
Everyone wants tight strong
abdominals. Make those
“abs” fit and strong and eve-
rything works better. Lose
that body fat on top of the muscle and “voila” you
are the proud owner of a six pack. In the sim-
plest of terms, the loss of body fat is a long process
related directly to your nutrition while the fitness
of your abdominal muscles is directly related to
your exercise. Let’s take the time to discuss the
fitness of the abdominal muscles which should be
of interest to most Buena Vidans.
Several years ago I was approached by an un-
named Buena Vidan to whom we will give the
code name CUPCAKE PRINCESS for the sake of
discussion. This unnamed Buena Vidan code
name CUPCAKE PRINCESS could not do ANY
situps and was desperate to improve her ab-
dominal strength. Naturally, during her training
sessions with me we did many different exercises
but the key issue is what should she do away from
me on her own.
The following is the most basic do it by yourself
routine that will help anyone.
EXERCISE #1 – (SUPINE POSITION IN AND OUT)
Lie down on your back on a flat hard surface with
a mat if needed. Place your hands under your
“booty” if needed and pull your knees into your
chest and then extend your legs out again. Repeat
ten times and feel your abdominals begin to tight-
en.
EXERCISE #2 – (SUPINE POSITION LEG RAISE)
From this same supine position raise your legs
straight up and then lower them slowly to the
floor. Repeat ten times and start to get strong.
EXERCISE #3 – (SUPINE POSITION COMBINA-
TION) From this same supine position combine
the two movements as follows – IN – OUT – UP –
DOWN. Repeat ten times and be a master of ABA-
DABAS 101.
Line dancing with mj
Now on Fridays at 10 am in the ballroom
WHY WALK WHEN YOU CAN DANCE?!
Great fun and exercise
No experience necessary
Warning: LINE dancing helps increase MEN-
TAL, PHYSICAL, AND SPIRITUAL health
awareness AND promotes healthy living.
First Serve
When you are serving make an
effort to hit that first serve with
conviction. So many times I see
players just trying to put their first
serves into play. Go for it, you have two serves, try
and win the point off your first serve. Place the toss
slightly in front of you, making sure the toss is high
enough. Remember the key element. Snap the rac-
quet into the back of the ball so that you are acceler-
ating into the ball thereby creating racquet head
speed.
So remember gang, toss high and snap that hand in-
to the ball and you will be winning more points off
your serve.
Have a great and safe summer to everyone.

THANKS MOM, By Bruce Maltzman
With Mother’s Day on the horizon, I just can’t be-
lieve that my mom has been gone for nearly five
years. My frequent thoughts of her bring both
tears and a smile to my face. That empty spot in
my heart still remains and hurts more some days
than others.
When “the call” came in August of 2010, I was dev-
astated. We were more than mother and son; we
were good friends who shared some time every
single day. We shared laughter, tears, good times
and bad times, and every morning we updated
each other as if we hadn’t spoken in weeks. It is
these morning talks that I miss most.
The life lessons that I learned from my mother are
the reason for any success I have had in my life.
And I would like to share them.
The first lesson is the importance of family love.
Through good times and bad times there was al-
ways unconditional love, unconditional support
(despite some of my questionable decisions along
the way). When I left home for my first teaching
job, my mom cried. The tears would be for all the
day to day sharing that would be missed when I
left Jersey City for the far corner of the universe-
that would be Toms River-an hour away.
The second lesson that I learned from my mom is
the importance of a good work ethic. My mom
was the hardest worker I ever knew. Besides
cooking, cleaning, raising a family and working in
dad’s bakery on weekends, she also worked full
time at First Jersey National Bank. (How was that
even possible?) The bank wanted to train her to
be an executive, but she turned them down flat
because it would mean time away from her family
and preclude her from meeting my school bus at
the end of the day. The bank made her a supervi-
sor anyway in charge of new accounts. So respect-
ed was she that years later, the bank hired me on
the spot just because I was Esther Maltzman’s son.

THE GOOD LIFE
If you are a movie fan, just not a fan of the Fast
and Furious franchise, you will be happy to know
that there is at least one alternative that should
buoy you during this post Academy Award drought
of quality flicks. Woman in Gold starring Helen
Mirren tugs at our heartstrings as it tells the story
of a woman who takes the Austrian government to
court to reacquire her family’s paintings that were
looted by the Nazis from her Austrian home during
WWII. The most famous of these paintings is in-
deed, The Woman in Gold, a magnificent portrait
of her stunning aunt.
Maria Altman (Helen Mirren) hires inexperienced
attorney, Randal Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds) to
help her in her quest which is met with persistent
resistance at every turn by the Austrian govern-
ment. The beauty of this movie rests with the
flashbacks to the lovely city of Vienna at the begin-
ning of the war, and the struggle of the city’s Jew-
ish families to deal with the impending storm.
Finally at the end………oh I wouldn’t do that to
you!! You’ll just have to see it-Woman in Gold re-
ally is a treasure to behold. And the fact that it is
based on a true story makes it even more poignant.
Now that the snowbirds are flying the coop, the
restaurants are dusting off their summer menus,
and good entertainment is becoming scarcer, I
thought this would be a good time to let you know
about a terrific website called
events@goldstar.com. Should you decide to be-
come a subscriber (at no cost whatsoever), you
will receive a weekly online listing of entertain-
ment from Miami up through Palm Beach County.
This entertainment ranges from comedy to drama
to jazz, and here is the best part-all tickets are dis-
counted. I actually attended a play last year with
complimentary tickets courtesy of
events@goldstar.com.
There is always a slight service charge, but the
prices are amazing. Last month my wife and I at-
tended a production called “Short Cuts” in Boca,
and the tickets were discounted 50% before the
small charge. It sure beats paying full retail.
And two final notes. If you are a fan of glass artist,
Dale Chihuly, you will definitely want to get to
Fairchild Gardens in Miami for his special exhibit
which ends on May 31st. The gardens feature
some of the most beautiful glass sculptures in the
world. For those of you who have visited the Nor-
ton, you may have seen the spectacular Chihuly
ceiling located on the first floor.
And for the theatergoer in you, the Maltz Theater
(no relation) in Jupiter has released next year’s
season subscription which includes The Mouse-
trap, Billy Elliot, The Will Rogers Follies, Frost
Nixon and Kiss Me Kate. Their productions are
really first rate. This year’s production of Les Mis-
erables was absolutely spectacular. And there is
not a bad seat in the house!

PLAYFUL OTTERS
Joe Schaefer BV Resident,
Professor & District Extension Director, South Florida
I have seen otters in our neighborhood, more fre-
quently a few years ago, but every now and then I
still see either live otters or remains of their kills.
This past January, I saw one bounding across Via
Fiore. Betsi Keshish and Carol Day emailed me sep-
arately reporting that they saw two to four otters
together during March.
The river otter is an elongated water-loving animal
found throughout Florida except the Keys. The
ears appear large on its small flattened head. Built
for swimming, otters have webbed toes, a long rud-
der-like tail, dense fur with a waterproof under-
coat, and a torpedo-shape. They also have a clear
eyelid that acts like swim goggles, can stay under-
water for up to 8 minutes and can close their ears
and nostrils to keep water out. Its short legs and
flexible long back result in a distinctive bounding
form of running and arched back when standing.
River otters seem to prefer fresh water, but I also
saw one in the Apalachicola Bay. They live in bur-
rows on the bank of the water body, often under
the roots of a tree. Otters may dig their own bur-
row, or remodel a beaver burrow in north Florida.
Fish are the preferred food for North American riv-
er otters, but they also eat frogs and crayfish. Small
mammals, mollusks, reptiles, birds, and fruits are
consumed opportunistically. They can swim faster
than most fish by propelling
themselves with their long
tail and flexible body. Otters
have only a few predators in Florida waters: alliga-
tors, American crocodiles and Burmese pythons.
River otters can reach about four feet in length and
13 years of age in the wild. Females usually do not
reproduce until two years of age, although year-
lings occasionally produce young. Males are also
sexually mature at age two. North American river
otters usually breed from December to April, gesta-
tion lasts 61-63 days, and young are born between
February and April. Litter size may reach five but
usually ranges from one to three. Males do not
help raise the young.
Ironically, babies have to be taught to swim. When
the young are only about two months old, mom
gives them a swimming lesson—she simply pushes
them into the water and then stays close pushing
them under the water and then up to breathe.
When the lesson is over she grabs it by the neck
and pulls it out of the water.
Males may travel up to 50 linear miles along a riv-
er, stream or south Florida canal. Inspecting their
long territory usually takes several weeks and they
do not follow a rigid schedule so hang out at some
places longer than others. Some BV anglers are
concerned that the otters will clean
out all of the bass. Indeed, otters have
been known to reduce fish popula-
tions in small ponds and at fish hatch-
eries where fish are very concentrat-
ed. But when fish are more difficult to
catch in our lakes, they will likely
move on as they have done before and
our resilient fish populations will re-
bound as nature has designed them to
do.

FROM THE GATE HOUSE
John Brandofino
In a continuous effort to maintain a smooth opera-
tion and minimize delays at the Gatehouse, it
would be greatly appreciated if the residents of
Buena Vida informed their guests, visitors, ven-
dors and contractors to please have their valid
photo government identification ready when they
pull up to the Gatehouse. The Gatehouse staff does
not swipe, scan, nor copy anyone's identifica-
tion. The identification photo is checked that it
matches the individual that is presenting it as well
as the expiration date. If a piece of identification
has expired, it is no longer valid and cannot be ac-
cepted by the Gatehouse staff. In the event this
should occur, the Gatehouse staff will call the resi-
dent and inform them, the resident will be re-
quired to go to the Gatehouse to identify the indi-
vidual, once identification is verified, a property
pass shall be issued and access granted. Calling in
expected visitors by either the automated message
system or the Gatehouse directly (561) 784-2498,
is a great help to both the Gatehouse staff and your
visitors.
DINE OUTS
We are trying something different for our dine outs. We will continue to schedule dine outs and
make a reservation, however instead of residents paying Buena Vida in advance, they will pay the res-
taurant directly at the time of service. This will enable residents to choose anything from the menu
they like.
Residents interested in attending must RSVP at the Spa desk by the designated date. If your plans do
change, kindly notify the spa desk as early as possible. We do not want any resident being uncom-
fortable being the only one to show up for a dinner reservation made for 12 people!

STICK BALL IN SOUTH FLORIDA
Cont’d from page 12
stickball on the streets of New York.
“When I got down here,” Marty Messinger says, “my
cousin told me this was going to be the most fun
game I ever played in my life. And you know some-
thing? He was right.”
Batting practice is over. The day has gotten hotter,
there are no clouds anywhere, and very little
breeze, and no one at Village Park seems to care.
There is a game to be played, out of the 1950s.
The game against the Stickmen is still tied in the
bottom of the ninth inning, and Marty Messinger,
out of E. 55th in East Flatbush, hits a ball that car-
ries past the doubles line on the fly, and the Bron-
cos win.
“Clean hit,” he says when it was over. “You see it? A
good clean hit.”
The Broncos win the game, and get to play another
game on this day, right next to the street sign at Vil-
lage Park that reads this way: “Stickball Boulevard.”
It is of course the intersection of romance and im-
agination, of Brooklyn and the Bronx, of Spaldeen
summers they no longer have to miss as much as
they once did, in this public park in Florida where
old men become young. The Broncos lose to the Va-
lencia Park Pilots in the second game of the double-
header, 7-5, in 10 innings.
It is all right, though. There is still the All-Star Game
next Friday morning. Next season starts in October.
They remember what it is like to wait till next year.

Thanks Mom Cont’d from page 20
The third lesson that mom taught me was the
importance of helping others-of giving some-
thing back. When I was in elementary school,
she was a “class mom.” Actually she was al-
ways a class mom. When I was a boy scout, she
was a den mother. But when she wanted to
chaperone my honeymoon, I had to put my foot
down. Mom also volunteered at the Jewish
Home in Jersey City. Years later, when my par-
ents moved to Florida, she was a hospice volun-
teer and also worked in the “Citizens on Patrol”
and the “we care” programs.
Mom lived in a small one bedroom condo
whose warmth and comfort belied its size, yet
reflected her personality. She hosted a couple
of canasta games every week, and her friends
tell me the games are just not the same without

her. Her modest income never got in the way of her
zest for life.
I think the greatest lesson I learned from mom was
by watching the way she lived her life day to day,
and the lesson is “The happiest people don’t neces-
sarily have the best of everything; they just make
the best of everything”.
Thanks Mom.

  • 4. 4 MAY/JUNE THE GOOD LIFE FROM THE SOCIAL DIRECTOR Suzanne Friedman May is here and flowers are blooming, although, aren't flowers always blooming at Buena Vida! Life is good! Mother’s Day is May 10, there will be birthdays to celebrate, weddings and graduations to attend, but let’s not forget there will be plenty to do here at Buena Vida in May. Join us for a Cinco de Mayo happy hour in the screened patio. There’ll be mariachi music and salsa along with some Mexican munchie’s and perhaps some home made Sangria to share. Bonus trivia points for who knows the other occasion besides V-Day Le Huit Mai is celebrated? Memorial Day will bring the annual Buena Vida BBQ. Remember those delicious succulent ribs from P. A. Grill. They were so good, we brought ‘em back for July fourth last year. They’ll be here this year again for Memorial Day along with SL Productions DJ entertaining us with some hip rock and roll music. Now, we don’t want to get bored with a good thing, so this July fourth we are planning something very different, however, at the press time, details have not been finalized, so its still a top secret that I am sure will please! Not to rush through the rest of the summer and fall, but the descriptions of each act for the 2015- 2016 show series is on page 21. And, HAS the social committee picked some great shows for the residents of Buena Vida and their friends to enjoy next winter! I still giggle when I think of Scott Record doing his impersonation of Dr. Phil. If you enjoy Broadway musicals, Marilyn Sanchez is not to be missed. Anyone from the tri-state area will appreciate NJ’s bad boy Mike Marino’s jokes. It is not often I am impressed by a musician, I consid- er myself basically tone deaf or, at best , musical- ly illiterate. But There was something very special about Marcus Terell. He does Motown classics with such energy and finesses. I look forward to seeing him after he really makes it big and saying I booked him at Buena Vida when he was a not well known. What can one say about the Beatle Maniacs. This show is what the Beatles would be like if they were performing today with all the effects that modern technology can provide on sound and lighting. 2015-2016 BV Show Series Sneak Previews will be coming to the clubhouse near you very soon. Have a great summer everyone. If traveling stay safe and send us a picture or two from wherever you may be. See you round the club house. THE GOOD LIFE When the community works together, the community works. The Buena Vida Good Life Needs You! If you’d be interested in writing an article for the newsletter, or volunteering some of your time to sell advertising to local businesses you buy from or once a month to help deliver the newsletter, please stop by the Spa Desk or email Suzanne Friedman, Social Director, if you’d like to get involved! • 5. 5 THE GOOD LIFE MAY/JUNE MANAGEMENT TEAM We are happy to announce and congratulate Lisa Carrabis in accepting the Administrative Assis- tant position here at Buena Vida. We are happy to announce that Marcus Stewart has accepted the day-time full time Club Attendant position. Please join us inb congratulating Marcus. FROM BE-BOP TO THE BEATLES by Lloyd Reife “Ungoogled” Questions that just might stir some memories 1. Who met in "Smokey Places"? 2. This one-hit wonder group hit a homer with "The Book of Love". 3. "Western Movies" was a hit for? 4. This group was "So Fine", they recorded a song by that name. 5. Who was the first lead singer for The Impressions? Answers page 13 Please note, if there is any balance remaining from the original $400.00 loaded onto your cafe cards last July 1, 2014 it will NOT carry over past June 30, 2015. Some residents have attempted to order take-out food from the cafe in bulk quantities. Their orders were rejected because food in bulk quantities is not a menu item and it is not available from the fresh food on hand. Management was requested to work out arrangements, so the cafe will accept orders for bulk order purchases. The result of our meeting with Buena Vida's Cafe food service provider is he has indicated a desire to accommodate his customers and he has agreed to satisfy bulk orders for take-out. However, all interested residents must appreciate that because the cafe strives to minimize waste by not maintaining an inventory in anticipation of selling food in bulk, therefore, satisfaction of any bulk order requires your understanding and coop- eration. Please provide the cafe with reasonable advance notice prior to June 30th. For your information and planning, to maintain an inventory of fresh food, deliveries are received throughout the week. Deliveries are not received every day, so satisfaction of a bulk order may re- quire several days to satisfy. Please do not discard your café card once you have used up the balance. The cards will be re- loaded electronically July 1st . LISA MARCUS CAFÉ CARD UPDATE
  • 6. 6 MAY/JUNE THE GOOD LIFE TEAM MELTING POT SCORES AGAIN! By Marsha Feldman April Trivia fielded 6 teams. Questions ranged from cheesy to orchestral. “According to the 2014 USDA report, which is the most popular cheese in America?” “Name all three orange properties you can buy in Monopoly?” “How many points do all snowflakes have?” “What two instruments in an orchestra have the highest pitch?” Scores going into the Final Question were close, ranging from 49 to 65. 1st and 3rd didn’t wager, 2nd place wagered an interesting 2 points and the remaining 3 teams each wagered 20. Then came the im- possible-to-answer final question: “Which movies ended with these lines… “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads!” “Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you” “So long…partner” “Kevin, what did you do to my room?” Team places remained the same, as no team got all four (or any) movies correct. Congrats to Team Melting Pot for their move back into 1st place! Join the fun, test your knowledge, have some dessert at our next Trivia Night, May 1. (Answers: Mozzarella; St. James, Tennessee, NY; 6; Piccolo & Violin) (Final An- swers: Back to the Future, The Matrix, Toy Story, Home Alone) Team Melting Pot Sail on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas. This pricing/ package is temporary, subject to change and is completely refundable if you decide to cancel by September 10, 2015. You will not lose your travel insurance premium, as it is included in the price. Many residents have waited too long to book our trips in the past, the price went up, and did not represent a good value anymore. Don’t wait to sign up. If you were una- ble to attend, you missed a great time. In the late Fall we will hold our Annual Dinner Dance. Save the Date, it will be Saturday, November 7th. JEWISH HERITAGE CLUB It is because of Fanny Han- del that the Buena Vida Jew- ish Heritage Club exists. That is why our March 18th meeting began with a spe- cial memorial tribute to Fanny Lipchik Handel who passed away in December of 2014. Fanny was born in Uruguay where she met and married Max. Fanny was an ex- tremely accomplished woman, fluent in many lan- guages, earning a law degree and a masters degree in education while raising her children. Of all of Fanny’s accomplishments, she was most proud of her marriage to Max, their children Diego and Daliah, and her four lovable grandchildren, Jason, Danielle, Lara and Jacob. It was a tribute to a life well lived! The second part of the meeting was the conclusion of the docudrama about the Thomashefskys, founders of the Yiddish Theater in America, and grandparents to conductor Michael Tilson Thomas who hosted the per- formance. The presentation was a loving and entertaining multi- media tribute to a couple of theater legends, Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky.
  • 10. 10 CHRISTIAN HERITAGE CLUB MAY/JUNE THE GOOD LIFE As the temperatures rise into the 90 degree range and the humidity remains high, we know the sum- mer season is fast approaching. With that comes the departure of some of our members. We wish them a safe journey in their travels. The potluck dinner was well attended and we en- joyed the many tasty dishes prepared by the mem- bers. Jane Clancy engaged our help in the decora- tion of the “Goody Bags” which were then filled with healthy snacks, pencils and erasers and moti- vational stickers. The photographs help you envi- sion the number of bags prepared and the supplies needed to fill them. These bags were delivered by Jean Clancy and Carole Wharton to Elbridge Gale Elementary School in Wellington as the students prepare for the District Testing. The 5th grade teachers were delighted to receive the 200 bags as they give encouragement to the children taking these tests. Our dine outs will continue throughout the sum- mer. The members’ luncheon will be noon on the first Thursday of the month in the Buena Vida Cafe. Put May 7th and June 4th on your calendars. The men’s group, who meet the second Tuesday of the month, will gather on May 12th at First Watch. The Ladies Outing will vary between event (lunch or dinner) and date. Because all the dine outs have been well received, we are considering members’ dine outs at restaurants in the area. Please watch for e-blasts and information on Channel 63 for all our activities.
  • 11. 11 THE GOOD LIFE MAY/JUNE NEWYORKERSFINDFOUNTAINOFYOUTHWITH STICKBALLLEAGUEINSOUTHFLORIDA BY MIKE LUPICA NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Sunday, March 22, 2015, 1:02 AM WELLINGTON, Fla. — In the high heat of the late morning, on the first official day of spring in Wel- lington Village Park, the basketball courts at the park have once again become the streets of New York City in baseball summers out of the city’s past. Old men play stickball here with bats they have purchased or even made themselves after a trip to Office Depot, and Skybounce balls, which serve as modern Spaldeens, they have found on the Inter- net. And in the process they are young. They are blessedly and wonderfully and happily young. At one end of the basketball courts the Buena Vida Broncos get ready for a make-up game they will play against the Valencia Palms Stickmen. If they win, they get to play a semifinal game in the Palm Beach County Senior Stickball League later in the afternoon. So this corner of Florida, maybe half-an-hour from the closest spring training ballpark in Jupiter, Fla., is once again transformed on this day into E. 37th and Church Ave., where 72-year-old Noel Levin, who serves as player/manager of the Broncos, played his stickball as a kid. It is Parkchester in the Bronx, where Vinny Marino played as boy. It is the streets near DeWitt Clinton High School, where Harlan Beispeil, 69, tried to hit Spaldeens out of sight once, before he tried to hit them all the way to Pierson Road in Wellington. “We come here,” Harlan Beispiel says, “and we get to turn back the clock for an hour.” I ask Noel Levin what happens if the Broncos lose to the Stickmen. “We go and have lunch,” he says. Marty Messinger, who is 71 and will get a very big hit in an hour or so for the Broncos, grew up in East Flatbush. He says he moved down to this part of Florida, to Valencia Reserve, just a year ago, af- ter spending much of his adult life living in Califor- nia. A cousin started one of the stickball leagues in Palm Beach County, and before long he was playing stickball again for the first time in 57 years. “I show up here for the league games on Friday morning or the pick-up games we have on Tues- days and Thursdays,” Marty Messinger says, “and I feel like I’m a kid again, trying to hit one three sew- ers.” There are seven teams in this league. Next Friday, they will not only have their championship game, but their All-Star Game as well. They are all here to win, these men in their late 50s and 60s and 70s and 80s, don’t worry about that. But they are also here to talk about the times when Willie Mays would play stickball on the streets of the city — “A three-sewer hitter if there ever was one,” Noel Lev- in says — and when stickball was their national pastime on a summer day. Mostly they are here to laugh and talk about the old days and try to hit the ball being bounced to them as cleanly as they did when they were boys, and the Spaldeens were bigger than these Sky- bounce balls. Noel Levin tells you that even after he left Brooklyn, he played stickball in Little Neck, in Queens. cont’d on page 12 A group of retired New Yorkers, the Buena Vida Broncos, play together in a senior stickball league.

Call the Spa Desk for an appointment 422-9191Ext. 202 MAY/JUNE THE GOOD LIFE “Lotta good stickball there,” he says. He is asked if he misses those days and he smiles and says, “Now I don’t have to.” You ask them about the bats, and they talk about how you used to be able to buy them on this website or that, but how much fun it is to go to Home Depot and find the right wood and shellac it and then put on the kind of good rubber grip they wished they had in those long-ago sum- mers on E. 37th in Brooklyn, and Church, and over on Snyder; at DeWitt Clinton and in Little Neck and Parkchester, and all over New York City, whether you were standing in front of a chalk strike zone drawn into a wall, or trying to be a two- or three- sewer guy yourself. They have come from all those neighborhoods of the city and lived their lives and now ended up here, at Village Park, once known as Pierson Park, to laugh and groan about aches and pains, and even being happy to be as close to a restroom as they are, and celebrate a New York that existed on- ly in memory until they found this league, and each other. The boys of Village Park are asked who the Babe Ruth of their league is, and almost unanimously they all tell you Bob Chille, who they joke is one of the kids of this league, at the age of 65. I ask who the older players are in the league and Harlan Beispeil says, “How old is Freddy Schloss, 84?” Noel Levin says. “Hey, Lonnie Weitzner’s gonna be 85.” Chille is asked where he is from and he says Brooklyn. I ask him where in Brooklyn and he doesn’t give you an avenue or a cross street, he just smiles at you and says, “PS 199.” He’s asked if he’s got the power everybody else says he does and smiles again and says, “I can still give it a ride.” They all walk you out and show you the pitcher’s mound, show you the lines for a single and a double and where the cone will be for triples once the game starts. In the distance is the wire home-run fence. The distance between home plate and that fence does seem to be something that should be measured in sewers or man- hole covers, in the fine old geography of cont’d on page 27 STICKBALLLEAGUEINSOUTHFLORIDA cont’d frompage11 The basketball courts transform into the old streets of New York at Welling- ton Village Park. Stickball Blvd. serves as the foun- tain of youth for many in South Florida.

Jerry Freedman and Bobby caught up on some old times from that area. Before long when word got out he was having breakfast here, there were at least a dozen people at our ta- ble. Others who found out, stopped by to shake his hand. Who is Bobby Wanzer? He was a kid from Manhattan who attended Benjamin Franklin High School where he made his mark as a star player. He then went on to become All-America at Seton Hall interrupted by a stint in the Marine Corps where he was inducted into the Armed Forces Basketball Hall of Fame while serving his country. Bobby was a first round draft choice by the Rochester Royals where he became a perennial All-Star, and even- tually a player-coach of the team. He also led the league one season with a 90% mark at the free throw line. People are always impressed with the sharp mind and wit of this 94 year old who is the oldest living member of the NBA Hall of Fame. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was asked to do something to honor this special person. I'm proud to call him my friend. C.O.P. Reminder Going out of Town? • 14. 14 THE GOOD LIFE MAY/JUNE MUSINGS FROM THE BALD WIMP Everyone wants tight strong abdominals. Make those “abs” fit and strong and eve- rything works better. Lose that body fat on top of the muscle and “voila” you are the proud owner of a six pack. In the sim- plest of terms, the loss of body fat is a long process related directly to your nutrition while the fitness of your abdominal muscles is directly related to your exercise. Let’s take the time to discuss the fitness of the abdominal muscles which should be of interest to most Buena Vidans. Several years ago I was approached by an un- named Buena Vidan to whom we will give the code name CUPCAKE PRINCESS for the sake of discussion. This unnamed Buena Vidan code name CUPCAKE PRINCESS could not do ANY situps and was desperate to improve her ab- dominal strength. Naturally, during her training sessions with me we did many different exercises but the key issue is what should she do away from me on her own. The following is the most basic do it by yourself routine that will help anyone. EXERCISE #1 – (SUPINE POSITION IN AND OUT) Lie down on your back on a flat hard surface with a mat if needed. Place your hands under your “booty” if needed and pull your knees into your chest and then extend your legs out again. Repeat ten times and feel your abdominals begin to tight- en. EXERCISE #2 – (SUPINE POSITION LEG RAISE) From this same supine position raise your legs straight up and then lower them slowly to the floor. Repeat ten times and start to get strong. EXERCISE #3 – (SUPINE POSITION COMBINA- TION) From this same supine position combine the two movements as follows – IN – OUT – UP – DOWN. Repeat ten times and be a master of ABA- DABAS 101. Line dancing with mj Now on Fridays at 10 am in the ballroom WHY WALK WHEN YOU CAN DANCE?! Great fun and exercise No experience necessary Warning: LINE dancing helps increase MEN- TAL, PHYSICAL, AND SPIRITUAL health awareness AND promotes healthy living. First Serve When you are serving make an effort to hit that first serve with conviction. So many times I see players just trying to put their first serves into play. Go for it, you have two serves, try and win the point off your first serve. Place the toss slightly in front of you, making sure the toss is high enough. Remember the key element. Snap the rac- quet into the back of the ball so that you are acceler- ating into the ball thereby creating racquet head speed. So remember gang, toss high and snap that hand in- to the ball and you will be winning more points off your serve. Have a great and safe summer to everyone. TENNIS TIP OF THE MONTH Mike Dushock

Happy Birthday to anyone born on May 8th Happy Birthday to Lee Kleinman on May 15th Lois and Stan Wexler wish a happy birthday to Eileen Friedman May 21. THANKS MOM, By Bruce Maltzman With Mother’s Day on the horizon, I just can’t be- lieve that my mom has been gone for nearly five years. My frequent thoughts of her bring both tears and a smile to my face. That empty spot in my heart still remains and hurts more some days than others. When “the call” came in August of 2010, I was dev- astated. We were more than mother and son; we were good friends who shared some time every single day. We shared laughter, tears, good times and bad times, and every morning we updated each other as if we hadn’t spoken in weeks. It is these morning talks that I miss most. The life lessons that I learned from my mother are the reason for any success I have had in my life. And I would like to share them. The first lesson is the importance of family love. Through good times and bad times there was al- ways unconditional love, unconditional support (despite some of my questionable decisions along the way). When I left home for my first teaching job, my mom cried. The tears would be for all the day to day sharing that would be missed when I left Jersey City for the far corner of the universe- that would be Toms River-an hour away. The second lesson that I learned from my mom is the importance of a good work ethic. My mom was the hardest worker I ever knew. Besides cooking, cleaning, raising a family and working in dad’s bakery on weekends, she also worked full time at First Jersey National Bank. (How was that even possible?) The bank wanted to train her to be an executive, but she turned them down flat because it would mean time away from her family and preclude her from meeting my school bus at the end of the day. The bank made her a supervi- sor anyway in charge of new accounts. So respect- ed was she that years later, the bank hired me on the spot just because I was Esther Maltzman’s son. cont’d on page 28 Please email any birthdays, anniversaries, or other announcements to: bvnewsletter@castlegroup.com By June 15th for the July/August issue Please Welcome Buena Vida’s New Residents Joseph and Laraine Cavallo

  • 22. 22 MAY/JUNE THE GOOD LIFE If you are a movie fan, just not a fan of the Fast and Furious franchise, you will be happy to know that there is at least one alternative that should buoy you during this post Academy Award drought of quality flicks. Woman in Gold starring Helen Mirren tugs at our heartstrings as it tells the story of a woman who takes the Austrian government to court to reacquire her family’s paintings that were looted by the Nazis from her Austrian home during WWII. The most famous of these paintings is in- deed, The Woman in Gold, a magnificent portrait of her stunning aunt. Maria Altman (Helen Mirren) hires inexperienced attorney, Randal Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds) to help her in her quest which is met with persistent resistance at every turn by the Austrian govern- ment. The beauty of this movie rests with the flashbacks to the lovely city of Vienna at the begin- ning of the war, and the struggle of the city’s Jew- ish families to deal with the impending storm. Finally at the end………oh I wouldn’t do that to you!! You’ll just have to see it-Woman in Gold re- ally is a treasure to behold. And the fact that it is based on a true story makes it even more poignant. Now that the snowbirds are flying the coop, the restaurants are dusting off their summer menus, and good entertainment is becoming scarcer, I thought this would be a good time to let you know about a terrific website called events@goldstar.com. Should you decide to be- come a subscriber (at no cost whatsoever), you will receive a weekly online listing of entertain- ment from Miami up through Palm Beach County. This entertainment ranges from comedy to drama to jazz, and here is the best part-all tickets are dis- counted. I actually attended a play last year with complimentary tickets courtesy of events@goldstar.com. There is always a slight service charge, but the prices are amazing. Last month my wife and I at- tended a production called “Short Cuts” in Boca, and the tickets were discounted 50% before the small charge. It sure beats paying full retail. And two final notes. If you are a fan of glass artist, Dale Chihuly, you will definitely want to get to Fairchild Gardens in Miami for his special exhibit which ends on May 31st. The gardens feature some of the most beautiful glass sculptures in the world. For those of you who have visited the Nor- ton, you may have seen the spectacular Chihuly ceiling located on the first floor. And for the theatergoer in you, the Maltz Theater (no relation) in Jupiter has released next year’s season subscription which includes The Mouse- trap, Billy Elliot, The Will Rogers Follies, Frost Nixon and Kiss Me Kate. Their productions are really first rate. This year’s production of Les Mis- erables was absolutely spectacular. And there is not a bad seat in the house! MOVIES AND MORE By: Bruce J. • 25. 25 MAY/JUNE THE GOOD LIFE . PLAYFUL OTTERS Joe Schaefer BV Resident, Professor & District Extension Director, South Florida I have seen otters in our neighborhood, more fre- quently a few years ago, but every now and then I still see either live otters or remains of their kills. This past January, I saw one bounding across Via Fiore. Betsi Keshish and Carol Day emailed me sep- arately reporting that they saw two to four otters together during March. The river otter is an elongated water-loving animal found throughout Florida except the Keys. The ears appear large on its small flattened head. Built for swimming, otters have webbed toes, a long rud- der-like tail, dense fur with a waterproof under- coat, and a torpedo-shape. They also have a clear eyelid that acts like swim goggles, can stay under- water for up to 8 minutes and can close their ears and nostrils to keep water out. Its short legs and flexible long back result in a distinctive bounding form of running and arched back when standing. River otters seem to prefer fresh water, but I also saw one in the Apalachicola Bay. They live in bur- rows on the bank of the water body, often under the roots of a tree. Otters may dig their own bur- row, or remodel a beaver burrow in north Florida. Fish are the preferred food for North American riv- er otters, but they also eat frogs and crayfish. Small mammals, mollusks, reptiles, birds, and fruits are consumed opportunistically. They can swim faster than most fish by propelling themselves with their long tail and flexible body. Otters have only a few predators in Florida waters: alliga- tors, American crocodiles and Burmese pythons. River otters can reach about four feet in length and 13 years of age in the wild. Females usually do not reproduce until two years of age, although year- lings occasionally produce young. Males are also sexually mature at age two. North American river otters usually breed from December to April, gesta- tion lasts 61-63 days, and young are born between February and April. Litter size may reach five but usually ranges from one to three. Males do not help raise the young. Ironically, babies have to be taught to swim. When the young are only about two months old, mom gives them a swimming lesson—she simply pushes them into the water and then stays close pushing them under the water and then up to breathe. When the lesson is over she grabs it by the neck and pulls it out of the water. Males may travel up to 50 linear miles along a riv- er, stream or south Florida canal. Inspecting their long territory usually takes several weeks and they do not follow a rigid schedule so hang out at some places longer than others. Some BV anglers are concerned that the otters will clean out all of the bass. Indeed, otters have been known to reduce fish popula- tions in small ponds and at fish hatch- eries where fish are very concentrat- ed. But when fish are more difficult to catch in our lakes, they will likely move on as they have done before and our resilient fish populations will re- bound as nature has designed them to do. • 26. 26 MAY/JUNE THE GOOD LIFE FROM THE GATE HOUSE John Brandofino In a continuous effort to maintain a smooth opera- tion and minimize delays at the Gatehouse, it would be greatly appreciated if the residents of Buena Vida informed their guests, visitors, ven- dors and contractors to please have their valid photo government identification ready when they pull up to the Gatehouse. The Gatehouse staff does not swipe, scan, nor copy anyone's identifica- tion. The identification photo is checked that it matches the individual that is presenting it as well as the expiration date. If a piece of identification has expired, it is no longer valid and cannot be ac- cepted by the Gatehouse staff. In the event this should occur, the Gatehouse staff will call the resi- dent and inform them, the resident will be re- quired to go to the Gatehouse to identify the indi- vidual, once identification is verified, a property pass shall be issued and access granted. Calling in expected visitors by either the automated message system or the Gatehouse directly (561) 784-2498, is a great help to both the Gatehouse staff and your visitors. DINE OUTS We are trying something different for our dine outs. • 27. 27 THE GOOD LIFE MAY/JUNE STICK BALL IN SOUTH FLORIDA Cont’d from page 12 stickball on the streets of New York. “When I got down here,” Marty Messinger says, “my cousin told me this was going to be the most fun game I ever played in my life. And you know some- thing? He was right.” Batting practice is over. The day has gotten hotter, there are no clouds anywhere, and very little breeze, and no one at Village Park seems to care. There is a game to be played, out of the 1950s. The game against the Stickmen is still tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Marty Messinger, out of E. 55th in East Flatbush, hits a ball that car- ries past the doubles line on the fly, and the Bron- cos win. “Clean hit,” he says when it was over. “You see it? A good clean hit.” The Broncos win the game, and get to play another game on this day, right next to the street sign at Vil- lage Park that reads this way: “Stickball Boulevard.” It is of course the intersection of romance and im- agination, of Brooklyn and the Bronx, of Spaldeen summers they no longer have to miss as much as they once did, in this public park in Florida where old men become young. The Broncos lose to the Va- lencia Park Pilots in the second game of the double- header, 7-5, in 10 innings. It is all right, though. There is still the All-Star Game next Friday morning. Next season starts in October. They remember what it is like to wait till next year.
  • 28. 28 MAY/JUNE THE GOOD LIFE Thanks Mom Cont’d from page 20 The third lesson that mom taught me was the importance of helping others-of giving some- thing back. When I was in elementary school, she was a “class mom.” Actually she was al- ways a class mom. When I was a boy scout, she was a den mother. But when she wanted to chaperone my honeymoon, I had to put my foot down. Mom also volunteered at the Jewish Home in Jersey City. Years later, when my par- ents moved to Florida, she was a hospice volun- teer and also worked in the “Citizens on Patrol” and the “we care” programs. Mom lived in a small one bedroom condo whose warmth and comfort belied its size, yet reflected her personality. She hosted a couple of canasta games every week, and her friends tell me the games are just not the same without PLEASE PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS, THEY SUPPORT OUR NEWSLETTER her. Her modest income never got in the way of her zest for life. I think the greatest lesson I learned from mom was by watching the way she lived her life day to day, and the lesson is “The happiest people don’t neces- sarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything”. Thanks Mom.
