Finance Minister sought to meet the expectations of the “aspirational India” by focussing on the employability of young graduates.
Sitharaman also pointed out that more girls were enrolled in higher education now than boys due to bigger reach
Realising the huge demand for medical teachers, caregivers, nurses and paramedical staff abroad, the government proposes to start a new bridge course to train young people in these fields.
The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asked the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Skill Development to work along with professional bodies to design the course.
By 2030, India will have largest working age population in the world and this population needs both jobs and new skills, the finance minister said.
the objective of the programme is to "improve the soft power of India with focus on the neighboring countries and use it as a tool in diplomacy" and to "boost the number of inbound International students in India", among others.
However, she did not give any details on where these universities would be set up, or by when.
In a move to tackle the problem of shortage of doctors in the country, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that all district hospitals will now have a medical college attached to it.
India currently has a shortage of 6 lakh doctors and 2 million nurses.
