Push for Alternative Transportation at Ohio State Bryan Townley
This survey research project aimed to discover the factors influencing students' transportation choices at Ohio State University. Specifically, it examined whether parking permit ownership or household income affected primary transportation mode. Surveys were distributed to students. The results showed that the majority of students do not own parking permits and prefer walking, biking, or public transportation over driving. There was a marginal negative correlation between permit ownership and driving, indicating permit ownership decreases driving. There was no significant correlation found between household income and transportation choice. However, the survey had limited responses for the income question. In conclusion, the research partially supported the hypotheses that permit ownership decreases driving while income may influence transportation choices.
Using ArcGIS to Propose an On-Street Bicycle NetworkBryan Townley
This document summarizes Bryan Townley's process for proposing an on-street bicycle network for Reynoldsburg and Westerville, Ohio using ArcGIS. Townley collected data on traffic counts, speed limits, number of lanes, and bikeable space to calculate a Clark Index of bicycle safety for each street segment. He created a network dataset based on impedance (Clark Index x length) to analyze optimal routes. Townley also modeled a scenario where speed limits above 35 mph were reduced to analyze safety impacts. The results showed Reynoldsburg's existing street network was fairly safe for cyclists, with a few unsafe peripheral streets due to higher speeds.
The Edge neighborhood in Cleveland is located along the city's border with Lakewood. It has a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial land uses. The neighborhood contains four districts - Downtown Edgewater along Detroit Avenue, an industrial area in the south, a health campus in the east, and a commercial corridor along W 117th Street. Notable assets include proximity to rapid transit stations and a walkable downtown area, but gray space and poorly maintained structures pose challenges.
This document is an infrastructure enhancement plan created by The Ohio State University's City and Regional Planning undergraduate studio for the city of Reynoldsburg, Ohio. It identifies issues with a lack of connectivity within the city for pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transportation users. Specifically, it notes a lack of connections between neighborhoods, parks, schools and other destinations without a car. The plan focuses on four areas - Olde Reynoldsburg, Brice Road, Waggoner Road, and State Route 256 - and proposes solutions like multi-use paths and complete streets to better connect the city and encourage more spontaneous interaction between residents.
This document analyzes the downtown Lakewood neighborhood through various maps and diagrams. It identifies the neighborhood's assets as its historic commercial district along Detroit Ave with local restaurants and shops, and stable residential housing. Weaknesses include a lack of green space and an over-abundance of surface parking lots that disrupt the urban fabric. Opportunities exist to further enhance Detroit Ave and utilize parking facilities for events. Threats include the impending closure of Lakewood Hospital and increased freight train traffic.

End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024Lars Albertsson
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.

The Building Blocks of QuestDB, a Time Series Databasejavier ramirez
Talk Delivered at Valencia Codes Meetup 2024-06.
Traditionally, databases have treated timestamps just as another data type. However, when performing real-time analytics, timestamps should be first class citizens and we need rich time semantics to get the most out of our data. We also need to deal with ever growing datasets while keeping performant, which is as fun as it sounds.
It is no wonder time-series databases are now more popular than ever before. Join me in this session to learn about the internal architecture and building blocks of QuestDB, an open source time-series database designed for speed. We will also review a history of some of the changes we have gone over the past two years to deal with late and unordered data, non-blocking writes, read-replicas, or faster batch ingestion.

based on fourteen criteria, including connections to the 2022 STA bus network, existing stop spacing,
demographics, land use, employment, and corridor destination elements. Stops with 2022 connecting
bus routes were noted as transfer locations and proposed as Tier 1 station locations. The analysis was
then used to designate Tier 2 and Tier 3 stations, as well as stops proposed for removal, with higher
scores indicating priority.
Results: The proposed Tier 1, 2, and 3 BRT station locations between the Spokane River in the south
and the Spokane city limits in the north were included as components of the project’s locally preferred
alternative (LPA). The LPA was adopted by the STA Board of Directors in 2021.

STOP ANALYSIS
Existing Division Corridor transit stops were evaluated to
determine future station locations based on fourteen criteria,
including the 2022 STA network, existing stop spacing,
demographics, land use, employment, and corridor destination
elements. Stops with 2022 connecting bus routes were noted
as transfer locations and proposed as Tier 1 station locations,
regardless of analysis score. The analysis was used to
designate Tier 2 and Tier 3 stations, as well as stops proposed
for removal, with higher scores indicating priority.

8. Active Transportation Project Prioritization
Rickenbacker Area Study
Mid-Ohio
Reg.
Planning
Commission
Objectives: As a part of MORPC’s first comprehensive planning effort, the Rickenbacker Area Study, the
study’s Transportation Working Group sought to identify the need for active transportation investments
to ensure that biking and walking are safe, comfortable, and convenient forms of transportation within
the Rickenbacker Area of Central Ohio.
Procedure: Using input from local stakeholders and plans established by Rickenbacker Area
municipalities, the area’s proposed active transportation network was defined to provide a framework
for analysis and prioritization. The active transportation network was divided into two sub networks: 1)
the low-stress network, or the connected system of low-stress pedestrian and bicycle facilities providing
access from local communities to the region overall, and 2) pedestrian connections, or pedestrian
facilities that provide safe connections between the low-stress network and study area destinations
(transit stops, schools, residences). To move from network identification to project prioritization, network
segments were grouped into logical projects and ranked based on prioritization criteria: MORPC-
generated walkability index, network segment traversals, crash statistics, proximity to transit stops and
schools, and status of existing facilities.
Results: Prioritized low-stress network and pedestrian connections projects were included within the
Transportation Working Group’s recommandations to area stakeholders, including associated project cost
estimates.

The prioritization of the Low-Stress Network segments considered the following factors:
• Current Bicycle LOS
• Accessibility Index
• Estimated Volumes
• Non-Motorized Crashes
• Transit activity
A goal of the Rickenbacker Area Study is to identify the need for
investment to ensure biking and walking is a safe comfortable,
and convenient form of transportation and recreation for people
of all ages and abilities. The proposed active transportation
network for the Rickenbacker Area includes both a low-stress
network and priority pedestrian connections. These are described
in more detail below.
LOW-STRESS PEDESTRIAN & BICYCLE NETWORK:
The low-stress pedestrian & bicycle network is made up of
facilities that include separated on and off-street
connections accessible to both pedestrian and bicyclists
(examples below). This network will provide major
connections across the study area, connecting
neighborhoods to major commercial areas and beyond.
Separation of modes is critical to providing
safe travel options for all modes and users.
PRIORITY PEDESTRIAN CONNECTIONS:
A low-stress network for all
active transportation users is
critical to ensuring safe,

WALKABILITY INDEX (AREA SCORE) - RICKENBACKER STUDY AREA
High Walkability
Low Walkability
The prioritization of the Low-Stress Network segments considered the following factors:
• Current Bicycle LOS

• Non-Motorized Crashes
• Transit activity
The prioritization of pedestrian connections considered the following factors:
• Proximity to Schools
• Transit stops
• Pedestrian crashes
• Accessibility Index
• Potential Connectivity
Workforce Mobility & Safety: Pedestrian & Bicycle Accommodations
A goal of the Rickenbacker Area Study is to identify the need for
investment to ensure biking and walking is a safe comfortable,
and convenient form of transportation and recreation for people
of all ages and abilities. The proposed active transportation
network for the Rickenbacker Area includes both a low-stress
network and priority pedestrian connections. These are described
in more detail below.
LOW-STRESS PEDESTRIAN & BICYCLE NETWORK:
The low-stress pedestrian & bicycle network is made up of
facilities that include separated on and off-street
connections accessible to both pedestrian and bicyclists
(examples below). This network will provide major
connections across the study area, connecting
neighborhoods to major commercial areas and beyond.
Separation of modes is critical to providing
safe travel options for all modes and users.
PRIORITY PEDESTRIAN CONNECTIONS:
A low-stress network for all
active transportation users is
critical to ensuring safe,
comfortable, and convenient
connections across the
Rickenbacker area. Just as
important are sidewalk and
pedestrians connections that
allow residents and visitors to
safely connection to transit
stops, schools, and the larger
active transportation network.
The map to the right shows
these top tier pedestrian
connections.
The proposed Active Transportation Network builds on numerous existing planning efforts, including:

10. State Bicycle Route System
2016 Update Report
Tennessee
Dept.
of
Transportation
Objectives: Build on the foundation established in the original 2011 State Bicycle Route System Report,
updating bicycle suitability calculations and analyses reflecting changes in Tennessee’s state highway
system, including enhanced maps and graphics.
Procedure: The Tennessee Department of Transportation’s (TDOT) Tennessee Roadway Information
Management System (TRIMS) was used as the inventory source of roadway data in calculating the
bicycle level of service (BLOS) for each road segment controlled by TDOT in the state. BLOS, a method
of calculating the level of comfort experienced by a cyclist on a segment of roadway, is broadly based
on automobile travel characteristics and roadway geometrics. To gather necessary data and eventually
spatially display BLOS results for roadways in the state, multiple TRIMS datasets were overlaid using
dynamic segmentation within ArcMap. The state bicycle routes established in the 2011 Report were also
overlaid with the updated BLOS results.
Results: The 2016 Update Report revealed that 7,100 of Tennessee’s 12,600 miles (57%) of state and
federal highways were rated as BLOS A-D (suitable for bicycle travel), while approximately 5,500 miles
(43%) were rated BLOS E-F (unsuitable for bicycle travel). Of the 2,500 miles of road segments included
in the state bicycle routes established in the 2011 Report, 1,800 miles (70%) have a BLOS rating of A-D,
with over 800 miles (32%) designated as BLOS A.
